The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has lifted some restrictions on gill nets to enable fishermen to capture more fish before the Gulf of Mexico oil spill reaches the Alabama shoreline.MOBILE, Ala. -- Alabama conservation department commissioner Barnett Lawley signed an emergency order on Thursday that temporarily waives restrictions to gillnetting along the beaches from Orange Beach to Dauphin Island.
Before, netters were limited to the time of day, days of the week and locations they could net. On major summer holiday weekends, the beaches were closed to netting.
Lawley said allowing netters to catch fish while they can "was the right thing to do."
Alabama Marine Resources Director Vernon Minton, who was in favor of the emergency rules, added that because the waiver did not impact the mesh size netters are required to use, smaller fish would still be protected.
Right thing to do for who?
