anyone done a 10K?

I've walked several 5K's, I'm a very fast walker so I knock them out in about 45 minutes tops and it's not even enough of a work out for me to be done for the day.

I'd like to do a 10K at the end of February in Ft Worth but I wonder if there are any walkers/jog walkers that do 10K's. I don't want to be by myself an hour behind the pack making the volunteers stay late because I'm so slow!

I can knock out 4 miles in 45 minutes on the crossramp but jogging has always been more of a challenge for me. This morning I crossramped a little over 3 miles (since I got up late) and this evening I walked an jogged 2 miles half and half. I'm thinking with only a little over a month, I'd be doing good to job about a third of a 10K. What do ya'll think?

I've done many 10Ks. You're fine doing one, even if it's walk/run. Hubby did one a year after his heart valve replacement and every year until he had back surgery. Hopefully this summer after over a year's recuperation from back surgery, he can do 10Ks again.

Peachtree Road Race registration is coming up soon ...

Thanks Beach Runner, I'm going to try, I guess my jog training started today. I printed out a recommended training calendar, problem is, I'm staring two months later than they recommend! Maybe their training calendar is for someone starting with no workout routine, I've been back on the wagon for 3 weeks now and have made it over the kicking my butt being back in the game hump. I was only off the workout wagon for 5 weeks and when I fell off the wagon, I was doing a 6 mile walk each Saturday and Sunday and doing 4-5 miles nightly during the week. Seems like I always fall off the workout wagon during the Christmas season-when I need it the most-but it's just so busy with all of that marathon shopping, wrapping, cooking and fun!!!

Don't be concerned with being out on the course to finish your race. I have run a bunch of 5 and 10k's half marathons and off road triathlons. I've volunteered at a bunch too.
As a volunteer, I have always gotten the greatest reward, not from watching those front runners (though it is a great sight to see) but by being inspired by those in the middle and at that end. Anyone who stands up and says "I'm going to do this thing no matter what it takes" is a hero in my book. My friends and kids have said the same after volunteering. Get out there and have a great time. Don't forget to take a second to smile and say thanks to the volunteers. Remember, half the people in this country will still be in bed or on their couches while you are pushing yourself to a new limit.
Best of luck.

Try the Couch to 10k program. Lots of running stores and groups put together C25k/C210k programs. Or download it from the internet or get one of many apps for your smart phone or even ipod. Do interval training rather than trying to run all out for as long as you can. Run a few minutes, walk a few minutes alternately and build up the length of time you are running. Doing this will keep you going for the long haul rather than burning you out at the beginning so that you are having to struggle to finish.

thanks for the encouragement! I am going to give it a whirl. I printed out a 10K running schedule last night. I'm going to try to job every other day so it's not too hard on my knees and hip. I'm crossramping my other days.

I ran my first 5k late last year, am training for an 8k in March and a half marathon in late June. Crazy but what the heck, you only live once...

ok ya'll, Friday morning I walk/jogged 5 miles in just under an hour and 10 minutes-I new personal best time for 5 miles and rest assured, I've never jogged that much at one time before! I just walked it yesterday because my quads and hammies were feeling it! I'm about to go walk 3 miles and will do another 3 miles this evening-I've been battling the don't want to's this morning!!

Congrats. It seems 5 miles is the magic number, according to most runners that I know (including myself). Now adding an extra mile or two will be a lot easier than it was before. The only problem is once you get used to covering 5 miles, it's hard to scale back down. Way to go!

Thanks ccj, I did it again this morning-easier at the gym than on the road like Friday and today was easier than Friday. Tomorrow is eliptical day, gotta hit it hard in the early morning since we're supposed to be iced in by tomorrow evening!
