Busness and ethics in College Sports >> Pay to Play content

Bryant Gumbel's special on business and ethics in college sports premieres on HBO tonight. Here are some excerpts. Of course, this is something that everyone knows goes on but we would love to turn our heads to it. I hate that Auburn was targeted when it clearly goes on everywhere, but it is still shocking to see/hear these words coming straight from the players' mouths...

It doesn't go on everywhere - some schools choose ethics over championships.

Some even have this crazy idea that the kids should be there to get an education that will serve them for a lifetime.

But it is absolutely ridiculous at some places and seems to be getting worse!

Sports Illustrated did an article on a similar topic recently. They researched every team in the top 25 and listed how many players with police records were on each.

Penn State topped the list with 22 - and that didn't include juvenile issues.

Pretty sad.

Enough of the sanctimony about some anonymous school you attended. HBO found four players with an ax to grind. One sued the school and just lost on MSJ, one was turned down for a GA position, one never panned out and got HBO to sponsor his "non-profit organization" and was dismissed before he played a down. All four have roommates/teammates that were far better players that refuted their stories. One of my favorite quotes from the stories floating around:

Former Tiger player Jeris McIntyre says an HBO producer tried to get him to share some dirt on Auburn ?off the record.? ?He said that about 10 times. I said, ?Fine. You want me to tell you something off the record? Here you go: Stanley is a damn liar.?

Like BJ Mathis, Karland Bennett and Ibrahim Rashada?

Other schools probably have something similar, but Auburn has "Operation Follow Through" that encourages former athletes to finish their degree. Any former athlete can come back at any time and complete their degree at no cost to them.

I was referring to BYU suspending star player Brandon Davies before March Madness for a self reported honor code violation (consensual sex w/ his long term girlfriend).

How many other schools would do the same, knowing it would destroy their chances?

Whether they have an axe to grind or not, people that "blow the whistle" aren't normally happy with the ones they are exposing.

The players have huge credibility issues. Ramsey said he sold Iron Bowl tickets for $1,000 each (in 2007). An 8-3 Bama team that lost to LaMo the week before vs a 7-4 Auburn team is never going to fetch $1,000 per, no matter how good the seats are. Even the past two years the prices didn't touch half that with one team headed to play for the NC. Beyond that, unless these guys are naming names, and thusfar they are not, the NCAA will never actually investigate.
