School district lawyer says handful of students sent home over the shirts


GAINESVILLE, Fla. - A lawyer for a north Florida school district says a handful of students have been sent home from Alachua County schools this week for wearing shirts that read "Islam is of the Devil."

School district staff attorney Tom Wittmer says the shirts might have offended or distracted others and violated the district's dress code.

The shirts are connected to a local church called the Dove World Outreach Center. Church Senior Pastor Terry Jones tells The Gainesville Sun that spreading the church's message is more important than education.

although this group sounds a bit loopy as does the pastor, something tells me theres alot less hatred in them then both bob and poppy. im just saying.....

demeaning islam is something mslsd will consider racist and wrong, but if they wore anti-god shirts than they would be heroes.

and are you saying that islam is not of the devil? prove it. and ill be more than happy to counter that with logic based on the written koran.

We dare not say anything negative about precious Islam. Had they sent home some kids wearing shirts that say Jusus sucks, you wouldn't have posted this, and the ACLU would be standing by their side arm in arm.

It was a distraction just as a "Jesus Sucks" t-shirt would have been. However, they have every right to wear the shirt based on the 1st Amendment. Believe it or not, but the ACLU will happily assist in a lawsuit to allow them to wear those shirts. Perhaps you should investigate what the ACLU does instead of simply bashing them.
