By Simone Baribeau - May 25, 2011 2:44 PM ET epublican Governor Rick Scott, whose fiscal 2012 budget reduces school spending and requires pension payments from state workers for the first time, scored the lowest job-approval rating of any governor covered by Quinnipiac University polls.

Scott’s performance since he took office in January was endorsed by 29 percent of those questioned in a May 17-23 survey released today by Quinnipiac. That’s down from 35 percent in April and lowest of the six governors followed by the pollster, including Republicans John Kasich of Ohio and Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania.

Florida’s $69.7 billion 2012 spending plan is $842 million smaller than this year’s. It cuts education by $2.5 billion and makes workers pay 3 percent of wages toward retirement. Fifty- four percent of voters in the Quinnipiac poll said the budget is “unfair” compared with 29 percent who back it.

“That’s a giant flashing political warning sign for Scott,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute in Hamden, Connecticut, said in a statement.

Scott is making the “tough choices” necessary to create 700,000 jobs, a key campaign promise, said Lane Wright, a spokesman.

“While he is mindful of the concerns from various individuals and interest groups, Governor Scott is confident he’s making the right choices to benefit Florida as a whole,” he said in an e-mail.
Budget Signing

Scott, the first Florida governor elected with less than 50 percent of the vote since 1916, will sign the budget tomorrow in the Villages, a retirement community northwest of Orlando, Scott said in a release yesterday. The Republican-dominated Legislature passed the measure on May 7.

The millionaire former health-care executive’s approval rating is 9 percentage points lower than Kasich’s and 10 points less than Corbett’s. The three were elected in November after campaigning to limit taxes and state spending.

Connecticut Democrat Dan Malloy had a 35 percent approval rating in Quinnipiac’s March 9 poll, and Democrat Andrew Cuomo of New York scored 64 percent on April 13. New Jersey’s Chris Christie, a Republican elected in 2009, had a 47 percent approval rating in a survey released April 20.

Scott’s disapproval score began at 22 percent on Feb. 2, the first Quinnipiac poll of his term. It was 48 percent on April 6 and 57 percent in today’s survey. Crushing public education to appease christian, redneck, lower/middle class blue hairs will earn you your rightful place in political hell. I notice he now makes all his appearances in the lilly white levittown o' lake county....The Villages.

Bob, I still have yet to meet anyone who ever liked this guy, Republican, Democrat or whatever. I'm not sure it matters as he bought the office once and until the Florida Democrats can mount any sort of credible campaign, he will probably win it again.

Yes, and I've never met anyone who will admit voting for him. Everyone I know also exercises vigorously everyday, and looks after their neighbors.

Here's an interesting poll from Florida Trend -- question is asked of business people. So, who are the people who voted for him and approve of his actions? Is it just the tea party?

According to a recent poll, only 29% of Florida voters approve of the job Gov. Rick Scott is doing, a new low. As a business person, how would you grade Gov. Scott's job so far?

Good. Just what the state needs.
[33] 16%
Doing pretty well, still early though.
[21] 10%
Disappointed in many of his stances.
[25] 12%
So far, so bad. I'm really worried about Florida.
[127] 62%

Where are the jobs or the job creation..or is that Crist and Obama's fault?

Yep-he kept his promises alright - he promised to gut education and he kept that promise. He promised special tax breaks for his crony corporate pals and he's making great progress there.

He promised to screw the state employees and rape, er, uh, relax environmental regulations so corporations could rape our environment and he's nicely making way on those.

Yea--his slogan should be "Florida:Let ME get to work."

I voted for him and I think he's doing a pretty good job. He's not the best of PR but what counts are the results. If the legislature would not have clowned around so much he'd have made even more progress on important issues.

The budget raised the corporate tax income exemption amount from 5K to 25K. The saving will go directly to small business which are the primary driver in job growth.

His name came up at dinner tonight. As a Kentuckian (from Louisville), I am still stunned that he was even eligible to run for office, much less win anything- I honestly never took him seriously until the horror of his election sank in. Now I am catching up to how awful he is in every way for our state.

One would think that Florida is way ahead of Rick Scott's type. But obviously maybe not.

I have no problem with being bidness friendly. My concern is that his education defunding philosophy will result in a dumbed-down work force, which is fine for the service industry to perpetuate itself, but otherwise, long term growth in other areas will be stunted.
