Anyone notice that most of the job adds are for cleaning, servers, retail sales, general service industry work? Don't you think we need something else? How about a real job?

Dig a little deeper there Ms Florida.....
I find it musing that your profile states your occupation is an owner of low income rentals, yet you imply that the same folks that feed you don't have a brain....
Don't bite the hand that feeds ya.....
Actually, my occupation as the owner of low income rentals uniquely qualifies me for this statement. These people are doing the best they can, with what is available. Many are struggling to survive in this environment and seem to be ignored by those who could help. Trying to support a family without much opportunity to increase their wage is very difficult. They support my efforts to try to bring a better life for all citizens, not just the elite few.

Hey ease up on Florida girl
I think she was trying to say we need more jobs that require more skill and working knowledge which requires more training, but also usually translates into more income so a family can survive on it and still have a house and car and health insurance ect, ect. maybe a poor choice of words by her but do you always want to be a busboy, dishwasher,or other low paying non challenging job or say would you rather be a chef, manager or business owner which all require more knowledge and training. Dont get me wrong i have worked 2 and 3 low paying jobs at a time and i busted my butt just to make ends meet. most blue collar workers work as hard or harder than the big boy's. but dont get near as much pay
Maybe and probably so - but what a way to go about it!

The employment situation is good for where you are.....A TOURIST TOWN AT THE BEACH!!!! If you want what you call a "real job" why don't you move to a more metropolitan area, where they have "real jobs". I am curious, do you clean your own rentals or do you hire some of the brainless people to do the cleaning for you?
I do most certainly clean and maintain my own rentals. I also do all the remodeling and repairs associated with them. And yes, I do have a talent in construction. But I would also like to see more than that.

My undergrad is in Philosophy. I learned to dig holes on the job, not because I had a talent for it.
I have to go to a rehearsal now. The musical director for the show I'm doing just finished at Georgia Tech in Electrical Engineering. Now he's back in school getting a Theatre degree. Maybe I should let you pick his brain.
At least you get to have a college education, and after you're finished, then what are you going to do? Dig ditches? I've met many in SoWal that have college degrees and can't get a job in their field here, and end up framing houses, or going back to where ever they came from.

In our high school work/school programs the jobs they are training for are mainly hospitality related. Many of the local jobs intended for a small portion of our local society are filled by the sole bread earners of the family. I think we need to bring in business that would require more training for it's workers, thus paying a better wage.[/quote]
The majority of business that require more training, thus higher wages are directly associated with industry. So are you welcoming a large industrial giant to plant their carcass in our neighborhood? A GM plant in Sandestin would be a beautiful thing......

This is the case everywhere, not just at the beach. I really don't know what my kids will do for a living. This country no longer makes anything. The service industry is all that is left.

Once again you assume that everyone who works construction hates it and would rather be a doctor or lawyer. Obviously some people enjoy there "menial jobs" otherwise houses would be falling down all over the place due to people who had no alternative doing a crappy job.
Actually, I love construction. I like to build things. Happens to be my talent. I love the smell of sawdust! My daughter, however, wants to be a doctor. And only time will tell how well these houses that have been built will hold up, and not fall down all over the place. You would think that in a community as diverse as this people would be more receptive to the fact that one size does not fit all. Not everyone has the same talent, ability, or are capable of doing the kind of work that is available. I wonder about all the houses being built, and the rents associated with them. Do the buyers have a residual income that affords the amount of rent/payment, or do they plan on getting a job here that will pay it? I think Tom Thumb starts at about 9 per hour, can they make that payment on that kind of salary? Now they are competing with the foreign workers whom their employers get benefits for hiring, ie tax incentives, etc.

Boy, that's depressing!

So, GM is the only giant available? I could have sworn they had a huge lay off?

So would you elaborate as to you vision of the type of business that needs to be brought into SoWal that requires more training and better wages if it isn't industrial related?

What about wind and solar energy, aerospace technology, computer sciences, electronic engineering, health sciences?

What about making county policy more agreeable for new small business to launch and actually succeed?

You don't know much about honor then, they don't want a free ride, if they did they would be in Government housing and food stamps. Nothing wrong with those aids when needed, but not as a way of life. They want their dignity.

All admirable. That way those who currently labor in the "tourist industry" can now be security, janitors, carpenters and line labor probably making a couple more bucks an hour.....sorry couldn't resist....
Good luck in your efforts...seriously. But in all honesty, this should have been the approach by the "native waltonians" a couple of decades ago BEFORE the tourist industry became the giant of the community.
bye for now.....

I am a native Walton Countian, and I did speak up years ago. However, the amount of money that was made in real estate was too tempting for most, and the cries of the workers were not heard, and still are not for the most part.

Most of those chefs ,managers and owners started out as that busboy or dishwasher. Not all the big wigs in the restaurant business around here have trained in a foreign country or have a culinary degree.
Doesn't it create a master/slave environment?Arent ALL jobs a master/slave environment unless YOU are the BOSS?

You need a degree to work in a restaurant???

I was responding to the quote and that being the manager etc required more knowledge and training. Most got that knowledge and training ON THE JOB. But know you dont need a degree but I sure have worked with alot of servers and cooks that have them.

Those who could help are our county leaders. I've been active in speaking out, contributing needed items, and connecting people with those who possibly can help. Trying to provide a safe, clean place for people to live.

I am no dummy and I am in construction. I find framing complicated enough that I would never just "end up doing it". Maybe framing is easier than it looks. Nothing wrong with tact btw.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I finished my undergrad a long time ago. I dig ditches now. Your comments smack of snobbery. I don't understand how you think you're helping people with your attitude.
Got your attention though, didn't it?
Like I tell the middle school kids who wear skanky clothes, maybe you should think about what sort of attention you really want. You can get my attention and lose my respect all in one fell swoop.
