I will admit that I did not follow the gov't involvment into this issue the past couple months as much as a should... but I thought I repeatedly read how congress passed legislation that would hold rates steady for a period of time and there would even be some refund checks being sent out to some policy holders...
 
How does this jive with your 100% increase... Is there some period before the legislation takes effect so therefore all companies will just raise rates beforehand, or is there some other loophole in the legislation? 
 
Just curious to here you insights in this matter.... Thanks in advance!

There was, I am fuzzy on the details though. The legislation only applied to policies renewing after July 1 I believe, so SHELLY you are out of luck. But don't worry! As a loyal State Farm customer, you are supposed to get an approximately 7 percent decrease next year!! :biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin: :bang:

In my case, my last year's policy renewed before the State Farm 50%+ bump-up that happened last summer (I only had a 32% increase last year over the previous year).  Then I've gotta pay my portion of the Citizen's Insurance bailout (to pay Citzens' policy holders' refunds, no doubt:idontno: ).  Even after that, there appears to be additional add-on costs to fund the State Farm's "Bread and Circuses" I imagine.

On the 'bright' side, the SF agent told me that they are still crunching numbers to see if I'll get a 7% or 11% FloriDUH rebate...:blink:

Makes one wonder how the school teachers, cops and store clerks will fare this year. :confused:

Allstate increased me about 50% last year and dropped me this year. they say I can be picked up by Royal Palm. Are they going to be a Royal Pain? Anyone know what's up with them? I assume I am getting the Royal treatment. :pissed:

No, I've been watching this insurance trainwreck coming for some time...and I'm liquid enough to deal with it, but feel the pain of the folks who can't take a 100% hit.

BTW Tampa, I know some folks who got the boot from USAA on their 2nd  home policies here in the panhandle.

BTW Tampa, I know some folks who got the boot from USAA on their 2nd home policies here in the panhandle.

This is really bizarre, because I received a refund in a rather substantial amount as a result of the rollback. I was quite pleased. Of course, also horrified at what the increase was in the previous year. In Florida, everyone shares a bit in the pain of the coastal customers (of which Conch Out is one). But generally, people should be faring better now.
 
Lots of people have had their coverage cancelled for several reasons. First, many houses that were built prior to 1950 are not constructed to code. If you're cancelled for this reason, you can have an inspection and then rectify your problems and usually get reinstated (albeit at a higher rate). Second, the insurance carriers are jettisoning lower value customers in favor of the higher priced homes. It just happens that many of those are within coastal areas, which is a little backa--wards, but tells you these companies are thinking short-term.  It is the job of the Legislature in FL to make sure that companies are not allowed to "cherry pick" their customers.  They're in business to stay in business, but they also have an obligation to provide the coverage they advertise in their market areas.  Unfortunately, the insurance business has become a real racket, I think. Consider...they skyrocketed rates in 2006 under the assumption that record storms were forecast for later that year, even advertised as such. When the storms didn't happen AT ALL that year (not so much as a tropical storm), they didn't reduce insurance rates accordingly.  No, siree!  They tried to raise them another 55 percent, at the same time reporting record profits in the company's history!  Outrage.
 
I hate to diss on the Web site, but I found State Farm Insurance to be the biggest pain in the world when I held policies with them in the past. They are famous for the big gauge, it seems.  Frankly, I willing to beg $$ that you can do much better than that company. And they are also famous for being quite difficult with claims. After Ivan, my claim was settled quickly and for the amount of the claim. In fact, I had a check in hand before the VISA bill arrived with the cleanup charges!  (Not with State Farm, mind you. Had a minor auto claim once and the agent tried to talk me out of filing it, even though it was a brand new car.)  Good luck.

There are a bunch of "new" insurance companies that sprang up in months following our record hurricane (and subsequent policy-dropping)seasons....many of them have never had to pay out in the event of a major storm--so far.  I've read stories that say some of these companies are founded and run by folks who've worked for the Citizens' Insurance Company in a previous life....:scratch:...imagine that.

Yep, they sent a letter out last week saying they will insure only one Florida homeowners' or renters policy per USAA member, and are not writing any new policies except to military members relocated to the state for active duty. I don't have the letter in front of me, but the CEO said that USAA collects about 12 percent of its premiums from Floridians while Floridians receive 47 percent of claims payments. :shock:

Our home in Seacrest is insured by Florida Peninsula, and we got about a 25 percent refund in January. I believe some Citizens policy holders got one too. This was not in any way related to the recent legislation, it was a previous Florida law enactment finally being enforced. 

What a joke the new legislation turned out to be. Not only is the Legislature realizing that its constituents are not going to be receiving substantial rate reductions from July 1-on, they also now understand the state is on the hook for billions of dollars since it has promised companies a huge amount of reinsurance coverage. So they are scrambling to fix this mistake.

One of the bills currently being considered -- listen up, SoWal! -- is that any coastal residents who take out a building permit for any reason be [B]required [/B]to protect their homes with storm shutters. And no, plywood doesn't count. So if it passes, here is how it would go. Let's say SHELLY's insurance premium last year was $1500.

1) SHELLY pays new insurance premium of $3200.

2) In late 2007 SHELLY wants to enclose his porch for $2K and takes out building permit.

3) SHELLY now is required to also spend $10K on hurricane shutters.

4) SHELLY once again not dropped by State Farm in Spring 2008, and even gets that promised discount from last year! Subtract $250 for discount, and another $400 since his house now has hurricane shutters. Total still $2550. :roll: 

5) SHELLY's roof blows off when hurricane strikes in August 2008. :shock: 

6) In spring 2009, SHELLY is dropped by State Farm.

USAA is an insurance/finance organization run (mostly) by former military members for the benefit of (mostly) active/retired military members...these folks know [B]Risk[/B] and [I]when and how [/I]to get out of the way.

what do you think of Citizen's? I have USAA for homeowners, citizens for wind, can't get flood (destiny west) and it han't renewed yet. I believe it is in May.

My experience with Citizens (wind) is that their rates were actually considerably lower than two other insurance carriers I received estimates from. At least they were offering coverage when others were running for the hills (2005).

We have not received any type of rebate from either of our insurance companies.   (Citizens and Universal)  We were dropped in November by Allstate and ended up going with Universal, who was taking over the Allstate dropped policies at the time.  Of course we had to pay a lot more.

I continued to research insurance companies and rates.  Very recently we switched everything to AIG.  They are now insuring some houses in FL.  They have to meet certain criteria, such as hurricane shutters, built recently, and it seems they have to add up to a certain value.  The rate for our primary residence was cut almost in half and for much better coverage.  The rate for the rental went up a bit, but it's better coverage and isn't Citizens.

There is a ole saying, "He who has the gold, makes the rules". All one has to do is look who contributed the most money to Crist's campaign to know why rates are not going to change. Regardless if its healthcare or homeowners insurance...their CEO's are always on the highest paid lists. Without serious campaign contribution reform nothing is going to happen in this state to reduce high taxes or the insurance issue.
