What's the average number of courses for an undergraduate to carry? Alex handed me his grades today and it looks like he took only four classes last semester. Is he going to get his BA in four years if he keeps this kind of schedule? I think the kid is pulling a fast one on us with such a light load!

You can graduate in four years, it all depends how motivated you are.
Our older kid did not decide on a major until late sophomore year.
By senior year he had some major (heh--no pun intended) catching up to do. Junior year abroad was wonderful in terms of finalizing his long-term goals (and, I am sure, a hell of a lot of fun), but a waste academically. He did not even take classes 2nd semester.
He had to fulfill his requirements for French and International Relations senior year. I can't remember exactly how many credits he took, but I know it required special permission; definitely more than 15.
He also took one course in summer school.
He made it. (They did let him walk with everyone in May, but he did not get his diploma until August.)
I do think double majors can add to the burden.
But again, how motivated you are makes a difference. That kid worked a part-time job his last three years at college. He juggled a lot of responsibility. Fortunately for him (and us!) he got most of his ya-ya's out in high school.

With me it depended on the number of hours. I tried to take between 15-18 hours per semester. Most courses are 3 credit hours, but math and science courses can be 4 credit hours--3 hour lecture with one hour labs.

Both mine did summer school to get the 4 years done. They took the hard dreaded classes then so they could focus all their attention on that and not have other projects distracting them. It's the way to go.

Ask me. I'm the expert. I'm a department chair, so that's what I do for a living. I'll charge you by the minute for my expertise, though.
