The Mr. and I enjoy bananas foster. So when I got ready to make it last night, I sent him to the store to get some rum ( any as long as it was not clear) for the dessert. He doesn't drink and picked a bottle of 151 proof. I did not read the label when he brought it home and began cooking with it. What a stupid mistake! As I poured it in the pan, flames came shooting out
...not exaggerating. I singed the hair on my arms and set off the smoke alarm. Finally found the lid to the pan and smothered it....amazingly enough the bananas weren't harmed. I picked up the bottle and it had a warning "not to be used on flaming dishes". I had a good laugh after I got over my scare. Moral of this story...pay attention when cooking with alcohol!

Oh my gosh! Glad you're okay!!! You brought back a few of my long forgotton high school memories with the 151! I can't believe some of the stupid sh$^ I did.
Dessert sounds yummy BTW.

I've done this. Luckily I managed to escape getting anything burned off. Here are two tips:1. Remove the pan from the burner before you add the alcohol, and then let it ignite as you put it back on the burner. It'll be a less dramatic flame, but you'll get to keep your eyebrows.
2. 151 is one of only two (I can't remember the other) alcohols that will ignite cold. A flame will catch on that stuff in a heartbeat.
anyway.... I hope your dessert was good!

I found a bottle of that stuff in the recycling bin (courtesy of one under-age drinker in my household who will go nameless and no it wasn't the one who was in SoWal with us ;-) ). I was shocked to read the "FLAMABLE" warning on it! I don't even want to think about what it tastes like going down. Hmmm, no wonder it was in the bin....

Hey, Skunky, you're too young to remember this, but 18 was the legal drinking age in NOLA when we were at Tulane.
Once we were in line at K-Paul's and went to the liquor store next door for a drink. Beach Jacket was 11 (and about 6' tall then), and when she got a Coke, the clerk offered to spike it for her! We always joked that if you're tall enough to reach the bar in NOLA, you're old enough to drink. :funn:

Get you a good size Watermellon. Poke holes in it about 1" in diameter. I can't remember what we used to do this with, but I am thinking a beer bottle would work. I know we had plenty of those around. Anyway, once you get the holes poked in the melon, pour in the 151. Let set for a couple of hours. Then cut and enjoy. Be careful though it will kick your booty. ;-)

We used to just cut a whole in the top (save the watermelon plug) pour in the everclear, put the plug back in it and float it in a cooler of ice for part of the day......mmmmmmmmm.......lethal, but.....mmmmmm.
we also used to put our beer in a cooler, pour ice on it, and then rock salt! talk about some coldbeer...remember, my brother says you have to say it together "coldbeer" it is one word.

My friend Martha always orders a "MillerLiteBeer"--all one word--in her best Texas accent.

this reminded me of our last cruise. the head waiter guy or whatever his official title was always made a flaming dessert, and one night he got a little wild with his flaming cherries jubilee. lets just say the fire extinguisher was brought out. very scary to see in the middle of the caribbean on a boat
