As some of you are aware, I work in a nursing facility. Our Activity Director is about as imaginative as a rock, so the Director of Nurses and I have started planning some of the activities. We have decided to have a Mardi Gras party on the actual evening. So far, we're planning Gumbo, Red Beans&Rice, King Cake, etc. But I need some more suggestions. Most of our residents are wheelchair bound, but some are ambulatory. We will, of course elect a King and Queen. So....gimme your best...

You must have beads and maybe masks for the residents that would like one. What a grayt person:clap_1: you are to work in that type of facility and bring funn to those lives.

oh, i forgot to say we ordered beads and masks(plain) from Oriental Trading, and the social worker who's a big scrapbooker, is gonna help them all decorate their masks. Any good music suggestions (Skunky?). Things to do AT the party?

Have them do a second-line. Tell them to dress in purple/green/gold.
Make sure no one swallows the plastic Baby Jesus in the King Cake.
Dixie Beer?
When my daughter was in first grade, I threw a Mardi Gras party for her class. (Most people are clueless about Mardi Gras around here. I helped her explain the meaning of the colors, 12th Night, Ephiphany, parades, etc., to her class.) From Oriental Trading I ordered a quantity of 12 masks and beads for her class. Well, that was 12 gross. She went to a small private school (graduating class of 12), so I had enough beads and masks to do a Mardi Gras party for them from 1st through 12th grade!

Music: Zachary Richard, Buckwheat Zydeco, plus there's lots and lots others. Maybe even a little Dr. John.

Too funny, BR! I like the Dixie Beer, they will too! Yeah, I'd already thought about the baby Jesus swallowing factor.

wish you could bring the girls--the residents would LOVE it!
I like the parade idea--I think some of the nurses are gonna buy ball gowns at the second hand store for the ladies.

If you visited the powder room at my house, you saw the pic of Olympia on the wall. They were my dad's favorite- he had even discussed having them come to Louisville to play at his funeral when the time came. I remember Dad telling me that it would be a better deal if we had his service on a weekday, because the weekend price was much higher!
When he dies, we tried to figure out a way to make it work, but the logistics seemed overwhelming at the time.
I wish like anything we had worked it out!SoWal Insider
I'm thinking it could work. They'd just be pushed under the pole but I can see them really enjoying it. In my mind, when a party is being planned for seniors, it's almost like planning a party for kids! It might bring back some funn memories for them.lemme think on that one. it could work, it could work.
Also, maybe they could throw the mardi gras beads around a bottle or a soccer cone or even onto a dinner plate. Sort of like they have at carnivals.

This party sounds like so much funn- I wish I could come!!! I bet there will be lots of happy faces!

You're so right about the similarities of party planning. It just makes me so mad that our Activity Director does ONLY what she HAS to do...they could be havin' so much more funn! She didn't even know about King Cakes, colors, masks, etc. If only I were the AD.....the men would be goin' to Hooters and the ladies to....do they even have those places any more?
Anyhoo, they'd be havin' a heck of a lot of funn every day!

Actually, she is! Just ask the nurse aide she took a bite of a few weeks ago.SoWal Insider
Hey, you could have a "find the false teeth" game. My dad was losing his every week and they'd call me each time - - I lived 1,000 miles away! Then they'd finally find them somewhere weird like under his bed hooked on the mattress springs!![]()

Serve Muffaletta pieces mmmmm. Could also do a slide show of new orleans architecture or blow up a couple photos to poster size and hang on the walls.
I agree. It takes a special person to do what you're doing. Thanks so much for bringing a little joy to those people. If everyone were as loving and caring as you, what a wonderful world it would be :clap_1:
