So, Obama's supposed to annouce his run for the candicacy tomorrow. There's lots of speculation as to whether or not he has enough experience (8 in state, 2 in national). I can understand that. I can kind of understand people being uncomfortable with a man who's father is Muslim, especially now a days (I don't agree, I'm just saying!).

But here's my limit.

"Could a Smoker Be President?" is what CNN was just running. They're talking about how Obama being a smoker could point to other idosyntric tendancies (I hope I spelled that correctly. WHERE'S MOLLY!?!?! I CAN"T SPELL!!) that have not surfaced yet.

Okay, seriously. I'm a smoker. I'm okay with admitting it! I'm addicted. But as far as I'm aware, that does not make me any less able to do certain things as others. I know that the world is taking a harsher turn on smoking (like the push to make any movie that shows smoking R rated) but SERIOUSLY? The man's supposedly less able to be president because of smoking?!?! He's trying to quit. That's a whole lot more than I can say. Doesn't that make him a little more human?

I swear, these political analysts act like they've never done anything crazy.

It might actually work for him. In that, the country has recently elected an alleged former cocaine addict and draft dodging alcoholic, with a current self-righteous addiction to religion, not once but twice. :idontno:

Tobacco addiction may actually swing a few conservative votes his way. Now if the left can come up with a counter to our favorite propaganda spewing, painkiller gulping, radiohead.

However, on a more serious note, he is one of the most articulate politicians to have graced the senate in a very long time. I am most interested in hearing his ideas, not necessarily his habits. Although I would prefer my kids not observe an otherwise great role model smoking.

If you are even the tiniest bit curious about Obama, read this:

http://www.barackobama.com/about/

This tells you pretty much all you need to know. I think he's a grayt guy. Might make a great president. We can't do much worse.

And so what if his father was muslim. There is nothing wrong with muslims. Muslim extremist on the other hand are a different story.

Just like there is nothing wrong with Christians. However Christian extremists can be quite dangerous. Like the KKK.

The actual Muslim religion is strict true, but peaceful and nonviolent.
Just a thought.

He will remain a closet smoker. And it does show him as being human with a difficult habit to break. (He can light up with Laura Bush.)

Yes, in this area, we work side by side & attend school with Muslims and never think another thought about it.

When I saw this on tv tonight I thought. . "Give Me A Fu$$ing Break." Is this what we have resorted to. One thing I do know, if he is running for President, he won't be able to stop any time soon.

Or smoke pot with Bill Clinton and as they think about the other pot smoking US Presidents who are long gone, one whom I seem to recall reading, grew it on the lawn at the White House.

If he cusses, I'm in! :clap_1:

I <3 Obama.

I really wish him luck.

And this is coming from the chick who voted Bush in 04. (Leave me alone!)

The Repubs've got to pull out some crazy strong candidate if they want to win this next election.

With all due respect, your comparison, of extremists is about as far off the mark as you can get. Currently there is something generically wrong with mainstream Muslims. They refuse to publically display their distance from their suicidal "brothers". Muslim extremist's total disregard for innocent life is on display across the world with each subsequent bombing. Obama has charisma, but mostly it's the blue state variety. I believe he will fizzle in '08 along with Hillary, who is still in search of a hint of charisma. Edwards can pull enough votes to win in all the blue states plus some of the South and West. He only lacks the money and the media, who seem to endlessly fawn over Obama.

I voted for Bush too (even if it was a "lesser of two evils" vote.) I like Obama very much - he is intelligent, articulate and very charismatic. It's really hard not to like him. And he is already my senator here in Illinois - although not from my hometown like that carpetbagger Hillary Clinton. I'm still pretty embarrassed to admit that I have anything in common with her (even moreso than the aforementioned vote for Bush!)

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Every Muslim that I've talked to looks down with shame upon the ones resorting to violence.
As of Obama...
I really don't think it matters whether he wins or loses, I'm just glad he's in playing the game.

But what about his policies? Doesn't that matter anymore? :idontno:

You know JOe, I'm beginning to think policies don't matter much anymore. It seems a President can only do so much anyway, whatever the big $$$ tells him to do. And he has already come out and said in his biography everything he's done. Nothing to hide. I think, overall, people are judging this "book" by his cover, by his name, not knowing his background.
I don't know if I'll vote for him, I too am waiting for some policies, but, as a person, and senator, he must be doing something right.

Well, it does probably make you (and Obama) more able to develop lung cancer; meaning there are voters out there who might be less likely to vote for a president who engages in a life-threatening habit, potentially compromising his ability to serve as president...? :idontno: I don't like any implication that this somehow calls his character into question, but there are legitimate health issues.

While I hear you on the $$$ running the country, it does directly affect the population when the President has the authority to appoint Supreme Court Justices. ;-)

I'm not voting for him, but Rudi Giuliani is center enough with his social issues, and still favorable in the public eye regarding his reactions following 911, that he may very well be the next President. -- That is, if the Republicans will vote for him. Many people in the GOP think Rudi is much too liberal. I wonder how he would have handled the Katrina craziness if he had been mayor of NOLA at the time.

Regarding Obama's legal drug addiction, I have no comment, as I too am a drug addict. Take away my caffeine and who knows what I might do. While I don't like the idea of leaders setting bad examples for the followers, I think his smoking would be more of a problem if he were being appointed to the office of Surgeon General. My guess is that the press would be kind to Obama's regarding his smoking habit, chosing not to reveal it -- probably even more kind to him than they have been to Mrs Bush, whom I've yet to see smoking on the television. One need not look past the lips to tell if one has been a smoker for a while. Muscles around the mouth don't lie.

Hillary is the favorite candidate of the extreme right. That is they hate to waste the smear campaign against her these past sixteen years. Her main crime? It appears that being an intelligent, well-educated female is her main crime. Oh yeah, and being a forgiving spouse. I am sure that if the dirt mongering far right media were to scour through most of our lives we would look much worst than Hillary ever thought about. Who was it that said something about ?casting the first stone??
I do not see her as a viable candidate, but I am sick of the rightwing smear. It is getting old.
