First time posting on this site, but have followed for awhile and love all the info that I have discovered here. We have been vacationing in the Destin-30A area for many years.I have noticed in some of the photos, autos on the beach at Grayton Beach. My question is how do you get access and is a permit required?

You need to get a permit from Walton County and I beleive you must be a land owner in Walton County to be eligible for the permit. Permit costs ~$150/year if memory serves me correctly (they are red and white...you'll see them on many cars around 30A)

The only reason anybody drives on the beach here is because they don't give a damn about the beach, or the area, or the locals, or the future of this place.

Ask the locals (who don't live in the 5 million dollar homes): Only jerks drive on the beach.

If one is too impossibly morbidly obese to carry one's own crap or self down to the beach, one should have one's kids drag one's bloated carcass out of the H2 and into a wheelbarrow for the brief journey to the water's edge.

You're potentially driving on endangered turtle nests, and even beach cops have been known to crush human sun bathers to death (another locale, but it could happen here all too easily) while rampaging down the beach in their 4x4.

Every time I see that beach drive sticker on a car down here I think to myself, I think, "There's another selfish navel-gazing twit who cares more about his own fat pasty white ass than anything else in the world."

And then I might get even more pissed and say something like
"OH MIGHTY ODIN, WHERE IS THY CLEANSING THUNDERBOLT! NEPTUNE! RELEASE THE KRAAKEN!" And then I would imagine a giant gamera-like seamonster rising from the swirling, vengeful gulf and smashing the poo poo out of some stupid SUV and everybody in it, and maybe taking down that ugly-assed, dooky-orange color new holiday fish inn between blue mountain and grayton in the aquatic maelstrom.

Seriously, unless you are elderly or disabled, you have no legitimate excuse to be driving on the beach. If you really love this area, then use your feet, stay off the dunes, and give the beach the space, care, and love it needs to flourish. The odds are stacked against us like the chips against a burned steak.

Only you can prevent beach assholism.

You must be a property owner in Walton County, have a 4x4 and pay a fee.

What I have learned that makes someone a "Local" in SoWal....

1. You must live in a house that is worth less than $200,000 including the land.

2. You must despise anyone that lives in / owns property more valuable than yours.

3. You must drive an older vehicle.

4. You must despise anyone that drives a vehicle worth more than yours.

5. Most important. You must have been birthed on the shores of Grayton Beach. No other beach will do. No other area in Walton Co will do. No hospital is acceptable even if it is in Walton Co.

6. You must be surley.

7. You must swirve at, yell at, and / or flip off anyone not riding on the bike path along 30A.

8. You must not be overweight or old.

9. You cannot have made a profit on any land sell ever in Walton Co.

10. Anyone not fitting the descriptions above just plain sux.

PUI or not, he has an amazing imagination.

I still dream of the day when I can slap a Walton County sticker on my car, slap the kayaks on the roof rack, slap my foot on the gas pedal & drive out to the Western Lake inlet for a good old day of outdoor funn. ;-)

I thought most turtle nests had wooden stakes driven in the ground with rope tied around it, marking it's location, at least the one we saw did. This one area we saw even stated that it was a turtle nesting area.

Those are loggerheads. Green Sea Turtles mark their nests with flourescent green spray paint, and Leatherbacks use orange traffic cones.

I thought so too..a little more snippy. Could be another part of his personality showing or maybe his significant other. :idontno:

The more I think about it though, 30G is honest and tells it like it is so I don't think he'd use an alias.

Hey Rickeybubbles,it was just a question not a life decision! It may surprise you but we do enjoy the beach without ever driving on it.We don't leave trash, cans, garbage or anything else on the beach when we leave at the end of the day.Heck,we have even been known to pick up after some of the locals that live close but don't want to pick up after their day relaxing on "their"beach.
