Be Not Afraid

"Let your heart not be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
--John 14:27

Fear is one thing. Helpless anxiety is another. Fear brings up your defenses, makes you ready to fight-to take on the aggressor and win. Helpless anxiety, on the other hand, saps every ounce of energy you have because you know that fighting will do no good and nothing you do will make any difference whatsoever anyway. Helpless anxiety wraps around you like a wet blanket. It weighs on you, takes the breath right out of you. It's a horrible place to be in.

That's where I was-wrapped in helpless anxiety-as I sat in the darkened church, feeling empty and alone. My husband sat beside me, holding my hand, but that didn't seem to help. Nor did it change the fact that our baby was six miles away lying in an incubator, fighting for her life. Born three months early, her tiny body was covered in a mass of tubes and wires. Her legs were the size of my husband's finger, and her tiny little hand couldn't even get all the way around my finger.

And I was helpless to do anything to make her better.

Sure, the doctors told me I was lucky that I had taken such good care of myself, that because of my good health, she was developed even beyond the 25 weeks she should have been. But I didn't feel like much of a hero. I felt like I had let down this little one who was counting on me. The should-haves and could-haves ran around in my head constantly bumping into one another and tripping over themselves, fighting to remind me of my guilt. That night, as I listened to what was supposed to be an up-lifting service, I didn't feel very up-lifted. In fact, I felt more depressed than I ever had in my life.

Then the soloist began a song from my past. I knew the words by heart although I wonder now if I had ever really understood them. I tried to sing, to get the words to come out of my mouth, but my heart just hurt too much. So instead of words, tears came as God whispered to me through that song, "Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come follow Me, and I will give you rest."

Be not afraid? How could I not be afraid? Afraid was the only thing I could feel. I wanted to DO something. I wanted to make things better. I wanted to go back and a do a hundred-million things differently so that we wouldn't be standing there praying for my daughter's survival. And yet, here was God telling me not to be afraid.
"He knows that in that moment things will be all right"
For the first time since the whole ordeal had started nearly a month before, I cried. I didn't want to, but I couldn't stop the tears from flowing down my cheeks. As they sang about standing before the power of Hell and death being at your side, as they sang about knowing God is with you through it all, I really wished I could feel His presence. I needed that. I guess I did feel His presence through the words of that song. A song that someone I will never even know had written down. A song that God spoke through that person to me, intended to give me comfort in my hour of greatest need.

In minutes the song was over, and the life went on. I wiped my face, picked up my courage, and marched forward-sincerely hoping God did indeed have a plan in mind, hoping as well that He would be faithful to His promise that He has not given us "the spirit of fear; but of power and love."

Over the course of the next month, slowly but surely my daughter did gain weight. One agonizing gram at a time. At one point we even threatened to stuff her diaper with quarters (each one gram) so that she could get to the magic number-1812 grams-4 pounds, so we could take her home. Although at the time it seemed like an eternity, in retrospect it doesn't seem like it took all that long. Two months to be exact. A full month less than the doctors had warned it would take. Then one cloudy September day we got to take our perfectly healthy baby home for good.

Less than a year later, I stood with my baby girl in my arms in that same church, and suddenly that familiar music started once again. "Be not afraid? I go before you always?" I looked down at my beautiful girl, and the tears started rolling once more. Hugging my baby to me, I could only sing with my heart because the tears choked out the words.

Even today seven years and a hundred scraped knees later, when those notes play together, I am reminded to the depth of my soul that God is indeed here with me. In my most terrifying moments, He is by my side. More than that, He can see the other side to what I can't, and He knows that in that moment things will be all right. And so, as a wise man once said, "All I have seen teaches me to trust Him for all I have not seen."

Because of one wonderful, talented person whom I'm sure I will never meet, I now understand that we can all "Be not afraid?"

I think there should be a forum just called "Issues", since we all have at least one, or two, or many....

Oh man jdarg...I bet I could start with A and end with Z and not list them all. I have been feeling very issuey lately. But, all those things make me, well...ME! :clap_1:

I understand the reasonings for such postings. I didn't read it though. I know God loves me, I know He's there for me and is probably a lot more reliable than my parents (who've never let me down). I don't really need the constant reminder. I've come to ignore those posts on Myspace that urge you to post a "Jesus loves you" message under another bulletin heading because, apparently, people won't pay attention to it if it does. I kind of understand that.

But right now, I'm praying to the god of my comfy bed.
Since I'm a monotheist, it's the same one I pray to for everything else.

And man, do I thank Him for my bed!!!

I will continue to post what I like on this forum. If Kurt sees that it needs to be moved to another forum, so be it. I wanted to post an uplifting story that may brighten someone's day...it did mine! Because you don't share the same belief system as I do, there is no need to bash. As a Christian I don't bash aethiests, buddhists, Jews, muslims, etc... I honestly don't think there's a need for it. I'm glad at least one person was able to stand up for their beliefs and say something. (Beach Crazy)
I could have guessed that most people in here are non-Christian, but I did not expect to get a lashing for posting an uplifting story. God bless everyone in this forum.

Josh, I didn't see any bashing here, and assuming the majority of the Board is Non-Christian, or doesn't have any religious beliefs because they may have not found your lengthy post as uplifting as you assumed, is a sign of immaturity towards the subject matter.
For all you know a poster could have found sadness with your post perhaps by not coming home with a premature baby.

That's very Christian of you.

I'm not sure where you were bashed/lashed. Comments were made(by many) as to what they thought was appropriate or inappropriate regarding your uplifting post. Were they not standing up for their beliefs also?

I could have guessed that most people in here are non-Christian, but I did not expect to get a lashing for posting an uplifting story.

So, if someone is not as Christian as you, is that wrong? And, if they don't think it was appropriate for you to post something spiritual, that makes them a non Christian?

Ditto to all of the above.

Josh, I liked what you posted. I was a preemie, but thankfully I was born only a month early and was born at a healthy weight. I can personally relate to a lot of those stories, because my mom has told me how scared she was when she realized she was going into labor an entire month in advance.

However, the assumption that "most of the people on this board are non-Christians" highly offended me. Everyone has their own ways of expressing themselves, and even within the realm of Christianity, there is so much variation on the way people think and act. Assuming that someone isn't a Christian just because they don't openly express their views is not only closed-minded, it's downright rude. As AIT said above, most of us are comfortable enough with our relationship with God that we don't feel the need to talk about it at every waking hour.

The ispirational quotes are great, and I did like the story. But please get to know someone before you make assumptions about something so big and important as their religion.

Sorry, I should not have said most people on this board. Agreed. I should have said most people that posted in my thread. How is that? Anybody that would mock Jesus is not a Christian. A prayer in a movie that mocks Jesus is not funny. Plain and simple in my book.
Everyone can have their own beliefs, I don't really care. I won't go into someone's thread and criticize those thoughts. Please don't come into my threads and mock my Savior!
As for everyone has their own thoughts on God and Christianity....It's pretty simple to me. If you accept Jesus as your Savior, you're a Christian. There's no way around it. Sorry if this offends anyone, but I will continue to stand up for what I believe and make it known. If you have a problem with that, don't read my threads.
I honestly did not want to get into a religious debate. I simply wanted to post an uplifting story. Too many people on this board have way too much negativity in their lives as they simply want to bring others down too much. Be happy folks!

not really. i too take offense at mr. mclean offering his level of christianity as being the benchmark of all that's good. being catholic is not good enough? my relationship with my maker is subpar to mr. mclean's? not so. the story is quite touching. the religious fervor behind it, is chilling.

Take it as you like John. I have my beliefs and they're not going to change. I will proudly stand up for what I believe at all times. If I'm bashed for it, so be it. I'm a big boy, I can handle it. By sayin that most of this board is non-Christian is correct. Most of the world is non-Christian in general, and this isn't a Christian message board.

Is being Catholic not good enough? I guess that's between you and God John. What is the basis of Catholicism John? Is it not based on Jesus as your Savior? Please clue me in because I am somewhat ignorant on the subject. I thought it was to be honest.

Every single thing is open to interpretation. I assume that the prayer you are referring to is the one from Talladega Nights. To me, that wasn't mocking Jesus at all. That was mocking the people that those characters are based on. The type that are so petty and competitive that they'll argue over something so trivial as which image of Jesus to pray to. And judging from this thread and all the controversy it seems to have stirred, there's obviously a little bit of that person in all of us. (I DO include myself in that statement, by the way. I know that I'm young and selfish, and I am not above criticism.)

So if laughing at that scene in that particular movie makes me a non-Christian, then I guess I'll have to throw away the Bible that lays on my nightstand and the cross that hangs around my neck.

There's nothing wrong with having a sense of humor. As they said in Dogma, "Even God has a sense of humor. Look at the platypus."

And here are some words to live by, from me, the supposed non-Christian that busted a gut laughing at Ricky Bobby:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

i believe we're on the same page here.

i'm not seeing where you've been bashed. as i've stated before, some questioned your reasoning. you answered, fine.

By sayin that most of this board is non-Christian is correct. Most of the world is non-Christian in general, and this isn't a Christian message board.

you are correct on in all three statements. I would look to a Christian message board for uplifting posts as yours, i did not anticipate it here.

Is being Catholic not good enough? I guess that's between you and God John.

It's quite good enough for me and my Maker. He doesn't require me to espouse my beliefs on a non Christian message board.

Please clue me in because I am somewhat ignorant on the subject. I thought it was to be honest.

not as ignorant as your posts in this thread would indicate. it appears that you beleve anyone who questioned your motives on this thread was bashing you, not 100% in line with your personal beliefs, and negative towards you. there were no personal attacks, but you have behaved like there were, imo. i believe i have been as honest as i can be throughout this thread, and as you have stated, 'stood up for my beliefs'.

I, and anyone who knows me, knows I am a Christian. My children have been raised this way as well. (Remember my kids, the preacher and the teacher?) It's who I am and the way that I live. My relationship with the Lord is strong and nothing comes before it. (not even the glass of wine or margarita I enjoy from time to time) Sometimes my humor may seem, not so Christ like. Please accept this, it's one of my favorite blessings. I enjoy postive uplifting posts, but don't insist that everyone does. They can speak their mind and it doesn't offend me. I have many friends who are not Christians and like hearing their thoughts.

Now, my brothers and sisters in Christ, as Christians you carry a great responsibility. Please try to treat people as He would. We are children of God, let's not beat someone with our Bibles or use the word of God as a sword. It only makes Him look bad.

No bashing or back-bashing should be happening here. Get back to posting and enjoy each other please with full confidence that God loves 30 gAy, beach crazy, audie and me, just as much as he loves Josh. I know I do.
