"Let your heart not be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
--John 14:27

Fear is one thing. Helpless anxiety is another. Fear brings up your defenses, makes you ready to fight-to take on the aggressor and win. Helpless anxiety, on the other hand, saps every ounce of energy you have because you know that fighting will do no good and nothing you do will make any difference whatsoever anyway. Helpless anxiety wraps around you like a wet blanket. It weighs on you, takes the breath right out of you. It's a horrible place to be in.

That's where I was-wrapped in helpless anxiety-as I sat in the darkened church, feeling empty and alone. My husband sat beside me, holding my hand, but that didn't seem to help. Nor did it change the fact that our baby was six miles away lying in an incubator, fighting for her life. Born three months early, her tiny body was covered in a mass of tubes and wires. Her legs were the size of my husband's finger, and her tiny little hand couldn't even get all the way around my finger.

And I was helpless to do anything to make her better.

Sure, the doctors told me I was lucky that I had taken such good care of myself, that because of my good health, she was developed even beyond the 25 weeks she should have been. But I didn't feel like much of a hero. I felt like I had let down this little one who was counting on me. The should-haves and could-haves ran around in my head constantly bumping into one another and tripping over themselves, fighting to remind me of my guilt. That night, as I listened to what was supposed to be an up-lifting service, I didn't feel very up-lifted. In fact, I felt more depressed than I ever had in my life.

Then the soloist began a song from my past. I knew the words by heart although I wonder now if I had ever really understood them. I tried to sing, to get the words to come out of my mouth, but my heart just hurt too much. So instead of words, tears came as God whispered to me through that song, "Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come follow Me, and I will give you rest."

Be not afraid? How could I not be afraid? Afraid was the only thing I could feel. I wanted to DO something. I wanted to make things better. I wanted to go back and a do a hundred-million things differently so that we wouldn't be standing there praying for my daughter's survival. And yet, here was God telling me not to be afraid.
"He knows that in that moment things will be all right"
For the first time since the whole ordeal had started nearly a month before, I cried. I didn't want to, but I couldn't stop the tears from flowing down my cheeks. As they sang about standing before the power of Hell and death being at your side, as they sang about knowing God is with you through it all, I really wished I could feel His presence. I needed that. I guess I did feel His presence through the words of that song. A song that someone I will never even know had written down. A song that God spoke through that person to me, intended to give me comfort in my hour of greatest need.

In minutes the song was over, and the life went on. I wiped my face, picked up my courage, and marched forward-sincerely hoping God did indeed have a plan in mind, hoping as well that He would be faithful to His promise that He has not given us "the spirit of fear; but of power and love."

Over the course of the next month, slowly but surely my daughter did gain weight. One agonizing gram at a time. At one point we even threatened to stuff her diaper with quarters (each one gram) so that she could get to the magic number-1812 grams-4 pounds, so we could take her home. Although at the time it seemed like an eternity, in retrospect it doesn't seem like it took all that long. Two months to be exact. A full month less than the doctors had warned it would take. Then one cloudy September day we got to take our perfectly healthy baby home for good.

Less than a year later, I stood with my baby girl in my arms in that same church, and suddenly that familiar music started once again. "Be not afraid? I go before you always?" I looked down at my beautiful girl, and the tears started rolling once more. Hugging my baby to me, I could only sing with my heart because the tears choked out the words.

Even today seven years and a hundred scraped knees later, when those notes play together, I am reminded to the depth of my soul that God is indeed here with me. In my most terrifying moments, He is by my side. More than that, He can see the other side to what I can't, and He knows that in that moment things will be all right. And so, as a wise man once said, "All I have seen teaches me to trust Him for all I have not seen."

Because of one wonderful, talented person whom I'm sure I will never meet, I now understand that we can all "Be not afraid?"

I just think christians give christians a bad name, especially when they think everyone around them is either christian or they should be. I believe it to be a personal thing to me (a catholic) and I wholly embrace many others and their own beliefs and religions. there is much to learn from others. this board is diverse in many ways, but I suspect most are christian in faith - but it does not matter in the least. I think most of us prefer to have funn on this board, via D/S&C, and when we become closer friends (face to face), then we share much more in the way of spiritual beliefs, etc.

I just can't stand these kinds of inspiriational messages because there are so many on email that it seems to cheapen the message, especially when sent to a billion people (instead of to a few chosen) and then require that you forward them to 10 people or bad Sheeit will happen to you. Do I care one bit about this story? No. It's the same one that people send every day.

and then when its posted in the lounge of all effing places, it's just bad manners, IMO. come on. get a clue.

I'm a Christian, and I haven't been to church in eons. But I believe that what really matters in life is that you treat people the way you would like to be treated. And I don't think that Christians are the only people who can adopt that philosophy. Just a little food for thought.

and on John R's behalf, his posts have always been educational and certainly open to discussion from any of the political viewpoints held here. I doubt he would be offended by anyone who opposed his views. He wouldn't consider them "anti-american" or non-anything.

of course we're talking about an open minded individual. maybe even a christian...

I chose to read this story and read every word. It was a very encouraging story from a mother who had a preemie and was understandably afraid. I hope that it will help just the right person.

Now on another note. I realize my way of life is not "normal" to most people. I go to prayer on Tuesday night, church on Wednesday night, Sunday morning and Sunday night. I don't drink anymore, I don't cuss anymore and I no longer smoke (even though somehow I was in on the first SoWal smokin' drinkin' party and innocently learned a new name you could call somebody):lolabove:

I try to be uplifting and encouraging to people by showing the love that was shown to me by Jesus. I have a inner sense of peace no matter what the situation. At my house, we don't downgrade each other, condemn each other or try to make the other person feel badly about themselves. There is joy, much laughter, good times and a feeling of acceptance for anyone who enters. If this way of life is abnormal, so be it. I've never been happier or felt more fulfilled.

I hope and pray if one of my fellow SoWallers ever needs me, they will reach out. I'll be there in a heartbeat whether by internet or phone (in person if I'm lucky;-) ). Our time on this earth is short and nothing we can physically touch will make any difference in the end. The only thing that matters will be if you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Every human being has the potential of being saved from what will happen on this earth one day. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I'd love to share with you!

Love,
BC

Yea, what she said!

I will continue to post what I like on this forum. If Kurt sees that it needs to be moved to another forum, so be it. I wanted to post an uplifting story that may brighten someone's day...it did mine! Because you don't share the same belief system as I do, there is no need to bash. As a Christian I don't bash aethiests, buddhists, Jews, muslims, etc... I honestly don't think there's a need for it. I'm glad at least one person was able to stand up for their beliefs and say something. (Beach Crazy)
I could have guessed that most people in here are non-Christian, but I did not expect to get a lashing for posting an uplifting story. God bless everyone in this forum.
I would like to stand up for what I believe as well and wonder why people had to make negative comments immediately about a spiritual post. We all know we get too many forwards but we really don't get too many posted on sowal. There was someone who needed to read it....no one else had to. There are plenty of things I choose not to read. No big deal!
PS Thanks Josh.

I hear ya Stelle Mama. I just think it was a little "much". But, perhaps we shoulda just stayed silent. as OL had suggested. it's just not that bigga deal.

I still ask why do we christians always assume everyone is christian, or should be. that is not the sowal way.

Maybe it is just that making such posts appears to be wrapping one?s self in Christ just in hopes, in this case, of selling some real estate. Maybe, just maybe, a good old fashion bedtime prayer might come off as a little more sincere to whichever god is perceived to be up there watching and listening?

?or maybe, it is just that, much like gifts, it is the thought behind it that really counts.

Josh, you asked me some specific quesions and i answered them for you. I have asked you questions and received no answers.

your thread has sparked quite the discussion, but it appears that that if you don't agree, you become dismissive:

At least put some intelligent thought into your insults. Pissing people off in a public forum is not good for business.
I'm sorry that people's lives are filled with so much negativity that an inspirational thread sets them off. Apparently nobody in the real world wants to hear the complaining anymore so they come here to vent.
I don't bother anyone on here. I never speak negatively about anyone on this forum. I keep to myself until someone begins to bash my beliefs. You don't even need to read my threads, much less comment negatively.
I am done posting on this thread. I will not continue to go in circles with every yahoo who decides to put in their 2 cents.

Sorry, Josh, that came off a little stronger than I had intended. Being a believer in prayer and its power, I tend to get a little peeved when I get those little spam prayers clogging my email inbox and I took your post to be a similar spam posting.

I believe that the prayer emails tend to trivialize, more than inspire, prayer and spiritual thought. And, judging from the comments I hear go through the office, those chain prayers probably inspire more profanity than prayer.

My apologies.

This is NOT like me but I'm jumping into this dog fight. This whole thread has bothered me which I won't go into but this isn't the first inspirational thread that has been posted, so what's up? If you don't like it . . move to the next thread or start another. And no, I don't think we should post inspirational things in the Environmental, global, Issues thread as John R suggested. If what Josh posted was so offensive to some maybe an Inspirational thread would work.

Honestly, the whole thing sounds like John R has a problem with JoshMclean, don't know, just my opinion, and we all know what that's worth. ;-)

Peace. . .see why there are wars, it all starts in our own back yard.

Oh goodness, I know I am going to regret posting this after I push "Submit Reply"
:clap_1::clap_1::clap_1: to dbuck, in spite of the risks of stating your opinion!

Please...lets get bak to the basics...this is a group of people that have differing opinions, completely diversified...and lets get out of that box and remember that we love eachother..despite our religion, race, creed, sexual orientation, a$$hloiness or anything else!!!!! GET OVER IT!!!!! :idontno:
One can profess the love of God and Jesus...but the proof is in the love of their fellow human beings...the proof is in the way you live and the way you treat the fellow travelers of this world...that, to me is the true test of spirituality...how do you "love" others... this board, and the wonderfulful people who post, are living proof of love
