You know one thing that draws me to this place? We call it "magic light." It's that particular time of day before sunset, somewhere around 4 or 5, where suddenly the light gets really dramatic, everything starts to glow and the shadows cast orange and blue. You know. We try to time our walks for that light. We get a kick out of when the surf is acting up at that time, because it looks like really bad, overdramatically-lit hotel art. Like a Ten Commandments knock-off with great productions values. Right after that comes that pre-sunset light that leaves deep blues and oranges when the water skims back after a wave. When i think of coming down, i'm usually seeing one or the other of those in my mind.
It's a real treat to have a beach where the sun rises and sets over the water, that's what gives us such a show.

What I love is when the sun sets over the Gulf (mainly in the fall and winter), and it looks like the water is lit from below, like a pale green, shimmering jewel. It is one of the most beautiful sights that I've ever seen.
I like the orange and blue sky, too. Proof that God is a Gator (I'm kidding- don't mean to be blasphemous).

Motivate yourself down to Finz (the old Elephant Walk) for Happy Hour at 5:00pm this autumn. Great southwest views with 2 for 1 drinks! 😀

I will continue to give more money to Nikon. They do a good job of allowing me to capture some of those colors. Adobe keeps trying to get my money and make me change the colors.

Kurt, speaking of seeing the magic light, can sound recordings be attached to these photos on this board? If so, I will take my puter down and catch the peaceful sounds of the waves coming in to share.

Something like this?
well, yes, that too, the killer sunset of course. the light i was actually referring to initially is a special, fleeting point in the day just before the sunset hour, when the colors and contrast picks up noticably. it's usually still pretty bright out at that point. look for it, it comes on suddenly and only lasts for about an hour or less. see i do graphics for a living, i guess i notice things like that. i love the play of light through color. thats why i love stained glass, too.

I think the light is pretty magical, too. We live in the city in a neighborhood dating from the 1920s, so you can imagine the size of our trees. Great big old oaks and maples everywhere. I wouldn't wish them away for anything, but you simply can't get a wide expanse of sky for all the branches that block it! And add to that the fact that Indianapolis is as flat as a pancake. There are no vista points unless you drive out of the city.
That's why I love the light at the beach. There's so much of it, all unbroken and stretching as far as the eye can see. I don't think I could ever get tired of looking into the broad horizons at the shoreline.
And the moon! I don't think there's anything more fantastic that watching it rise, especially when it's low in the sky and so full of color. Throw in an outdoor movie at Rosemary Beach or Seaside, and I'm in heaven.

MountainFilm Festival at WaterColor is an annual event. These shots were during a lunar eclipse in 2003.
