I think he is trying to demonstrate by having us white folk look in the mirror, as we lump people together in groups based on race, sexuality, etc, while blaming the entire group for individual's actions. ;-) Of course some people posting in here refuse to participate, and they begin to defend the white people. That being said, despite the fact that there are both good and bad white, black, and yellow people, there are cultural effects independent of skin color that contribute to huge differences between the races.

This was never more clear to me than when we had the experience of being MIT parents. Most Asian students' parents had dedicated their lives getting their children into MIT. One couple that we met from Hong Kong had sent their child to a tony prep school in Boston in the seventh grade to secure him a place at MIT, even if that meant that they lost the joy of the presence of their child. There were very few blacks at MIT that weren't Kenyans, and Caucasians were in the distinct minority. My husband and I joked about a "Minority Parents Dinner" at orientation. We almost went because we were definitely the minority -- there were very few Caucasian parents.

We Americans are the envy of the world. Do you think this is the right way to talk about white people. It further stereotypes for both blacks and whites.

People are people no matter what many may think. This thread is not appropriate and I believe it does not serve us well as Americans to say things that have been said. Is it anyones opinion that blacks are not qualified to be great scientist,Doctors,Mathematicians,and anything else
that one could think up.

My brother is African American and I find that comment very distasteful.

After the VT incident, someone told me that she thinks white people and Asians are crazy as compared to blacks. She said that you won't see any black person randomly killing anyone -- if they kill a particular person, at least they have a reason -- they're blankin' p.o.'ed at that person!

Another problem with white people is described in the following rant by a black person to my mother on MARTA:
"You white folks is so pale. Look at how pale she is. How do you stand being so pale? You is so pale."

The trouble with white people is that most of us need anti-depressants and we are too pale.

Oh, and also, as several of my Asian friends in grad school told me, they think white people smell. They said we smell like wet chicken. They also said that black people smell like bacon. I'll have to admit that the Asians I've known have no annoying body odor.

So I guess another problem with white people is that we smell like wet chickens.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with you right there. Actually saying that we are the envy of the world is what makes Americans look bad. I believe the term is "Ugly American."

Most of my British friends think we're culturally immature and have a poor world view as a whole and don't envy us one iota. Sadly, I kinda think they're right. I love America and love being one even more, but envied we're not.

You can spot an American abroad from 100 yards away. They'll be the one with the white tennis shoes, blue jeans, Gap t-shirt while loudly commenting to each other how cute it is that even the little kids speak another language. Seen it, heard it, lived it. :roll:

On the contrary. The trend I'm seeing is that my black students are highly motivated and are more successful than most of my white students who for the most part are complacent, lazy, and feel as though they are entitled to success. In general, my Asian students achieve at a much higher level than everyone else due to cultural expectations, as well as other factors.

Well, I am poorly travelled, but according to the news coverage I saw, 85% of the French voted and the majority opted for less socialism and a more, dare I utter it, American approach to government, work, etc. And I thought they viewed us with such disdain...ah, whatever, I am going there next year and will see for myself.

The french populace do not generally view Americans with disdain - our generation actually embraces a lot of american values, capitalism, business, arts, movies, etc... they do however view the current administration as incompetent, meddlesome, arrogant and were generally perplexed in 2004 when George W. Bush won the general election (although they were also surprised that so many people do not vote!!!).

France is stuck in a deadly economic sludge and any politician who DARES to talk about curbing back their insanely disproportionate share of retirement and benefits wil find himself/herself at the mercy of unions and riots that will literally paralize and cripple the country - so the fact that Sarkozy won on a somewhat unpopular platform of much needed drastic reform - well that was a coup! Hopefully his government will not find itself having to deal with the same issues of co-habitation that destroyed any possibility of eceonomic growth over the past 2 decades - he will hopefully have the political clout and power to enact difficult choices and the french will give him this leeway he needs in order to advance their interests and economic prospects. Make sense?

And yes, the french take their elections very seriously - 85% turnout is typical.

He did kowtow to the unions and embrace protectionism. Hopefully it was in word only, but regardless he was infinitely better than Royal.
