I need some advice

My DIL is pushing and pushing my son to enlist in the military right in the middle of all the horrid war over in Iraq and other countries. Well over 2500 of our boys have lost their lives already. Her reason, wanting health insurance and college money. There are other ways to get insurance and college money and it does not involve getting your head or limbs blown off in hopes of earning it afterwards. Not to mention I have done plenty of reading on the internet as to what the military promises to reel recruits in and the promises never materialize. She is calling him 3 or 4 times a day yelling at him that he is a loser, and a coward, and is as worthless as this former friend of his. DIL and I have already had words over this. My son works hard at his job, he works 50+ hours per week working on automobiles. Very tiring work. She on the other hand is working as a temporary only when work is found for her. My son has no insurance where he works. Only the management gets health insurance provided. He can get it if he wants to pay outrageous for it. You would think this girl would learn her lesson after her mother dropped dead in Walmart at the age of 42 of a heart attack 3 weeks ago. And at 21 she had to bury her mother. She also stated that the last words the two of them spoke to each other were angry words. Apparently she has not learned her lesson as to being kinder. She has gone back to her old ways. He has told her he is not going to do it, period. And told her if she was so set on the military to enlist herself since her family is a military family. How can he get her off of his back? This burns me up. :bang:

And stay out of it. It is their marriage, not yours.

He has called me here at work 3 times today and this every time after she has called nagging at him. And as for him leaving, he has no car. Only she does. And he is walking distance to his work. I feel like I am being drug into the middle of it.

Wow, sorry to hear all that. Damned if you do, damned if you don't kinda situation for you.

Obviously, I can only speak to what you've stated, but it seems like they/she have bigger issues than just the military one if that is truly how she speaks to him and thinks of him. :idontno:

If my partner for life and unconditional lover and soulmate was calling me a loser and a coward then I'd have to seriously look into some counseling of a marriage or legal type. That is a really tough situation.

The way it looks they will not be partners for life. They have been married two years and to be honest I am surprised they have made it that long. I try to stay out of stuff but one will call complaining and then the other, or it used to be that way. She called me the other night chewing me out and I unloaded on her. I told her from day one it seems like she has tried to find ways to get rid of my son or trying to put him in harms way somehow. First wanting him to take a job at the jail watching inmates, and now this deal with the military. She was a handful before they married.

I totally agree w/ TNJed!

Stay out of it as much as possible (I know that's hard, especially w/ such major consequences and when he is calling you about it) and do your best to support your son without badmouthing or causing a rift w/ your daughter in law.

Perhaps finding a non-military alternative (or a job for her) that would provide health insurance or college money? I keep seeing TV ads for low cost health insurance.

Obviously something happened to make her suddenly start forcing the issue like this - there is always more to the story, but it sounds very odd and unhealthy.

There are many alternatives other than the military where insurance is concerned. If she doesn't stay off of the phone at her temporary job she won't have that to go to. They will get tired of that. She has built up a huge amount of medical bills. Medical bills they cannot afford and haven't been able to pay on. Like over $10,000. I am sure that stresses her along with her mother's death.

Is it possible her mother's sudden death has freaked her out and she is worried about not having any safety net?

She lost her mother 3 weeks ago and now she wants her husband to have a permanent job w/ health insurance and educational benefits......

I think she definitely needs counseling at any rate.

He can get insurance through his work but through an outside insurance company. I told him to check on it tomorrow when he goes back to work, just to get a ballpark figure on how much it is.

Having insurance is important but if he gets the insurance now, the company will not pay for her outstanding bills or if she has pre-exsting medical problems..just a thought.

I know they won't pay for any pre-existing conditions, so I don't understand her push for all of this. I think she is panicking. She mentioned to him them not having any life insurance. She does have health insurance on them both for now but only until the end of the month.
