Here is a recipe touted as a black fly repellant straight from the pages of Field & Stream magazine. It probably doesn't work as well as DEET, but if you wanna go the magic potion route, here it is:

4 parts vegetable oil
2 parts aloe vera juice/gel
1 part cedar, citronella or sassafrass oil

Apply to the hands, face, hairline. The magazine also suggests you wear light colored clothing as black flies are attracted to dark blue, brown and black. Good luck:cool:

As an FYI - Most literature on Essential Oils, cautions people against using Cedar Essential Oil when pregnant, as well as using in high concentrations as it is a skin irritant. Citronella can also be a skin irritant when used in high concentrations. Also, Skunky's recipe is not specific, but if you are going to make this potion, use quality Essential Oils, not aromatic or fragrance oils. Fragrance oils should not be applied to the skin.

Lastly, I would like to note that Sassafras Essential Oil is carcinogenic and is currently banned for use in cosmetics in Europe.

NOTE: Just because a product contains Essential Oils, doesn't make it healthy.

I think he is saying that he cannot win, whether it is DDT or essential oils. :funn:

I'm sure that most doctors want to know if their patients are self-medicating with homopathic medicines, because of possible affects of prescribing prescription medication. All I am saying is that just because something is naturally grown, doesn't make it healthy. You wouldn't go rubbing poison ivy or tobacco on your skin, and you shouldn't run out to put other things on your body without some basic research. Yes, this home brew might be better than DEET, but it should not be used without noting the precautions and potential dangers, hence my post.

I give kudos to Skunky  for trying with the bug juice and SJ for knowing his essential oils.

UT, I use a similar method. Smoking 5 or 6 cigarettes at a time usually keeps the bugs away. 😀

My daughter says in Jamaica some people rub limes on themselves. Sticky yes but so is bug spray. Plus it goes well with Corona. 😀She said there it was actually Red Stripe.

skunky, I give you an A, for effort, on this alternative recipe. The Cedar and Citronella will work fairly well at repelling mosquitos, but it won't repel the Dog Flies, even DEET doesn't do that. Instead of using these essential oils listed above in the recipe, you will have more success substituting Lemon Eucalyptus E.O.
