OKAY- the "Television is Killing Us" thread made me think about my summer reading list....what is on yours? Amazon.com is a dangerous place for me.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (author of The Kite Runner, oneof my favorite books)

God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens. Now THIS should be interesting!

The Assault on Reason by Al Gore. Let's see what Big Al has to offer.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling. Duh! Can't wait!

I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence by Amy Sedaris. Sounds hauntingly familiar.

Oh, I loved that book, NoHall. If you love Haven, I have some recommendations of stuff I bet you'd like. She makes me howl.

Ooh--tell me! I saw that she had a bunch of books, and I just picked that one at random.

Just started the new Jonathan Franzen book The Discomfort Zone. I loved The Corrections- which y'all might remember as the book that Oprah picked for bookclub, then dis-invited Fransen after he voiced his displeasure of having her book club stamp all over his books. Apparently, he wanted the book that he wrote to feature him- imagine that!! The nerve!

I just finished reading The Kite Runner and cried like a little baby. Absolutely beautiful.
Anyone else read it?

Isn't it funny how when someone you don't like reads a book and likes it, you instantly go "bleh" when you think of it. (Not you PotatoVixen--if anything, you would reverse my "bleh" on it.)

Unfortunately, I have no time lately to read for fun. Right now I'm being forced to read (which means I'll read enough to write a report) Possible Lives: The Promise of Public Education in America. The sad part is that I would probably enjoy it if I didn't have to swallow 425 pages of it by Tuesday-ish.

Meanwhile, I keep a bathroom/pillow book at hand. (That sounds worse than I thought it would. It's the book I take to read in the bathtub and also have at hand for that last ten minutes before I fall asleep.) Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar: Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes. It's almost as good as my Born on a Rotten Day astrology book.

I still haven't read it; I think I might be one of the last 5 people on the planet who haven't. (It's the same group of us who haven't seen "Talladega Nights"--me, SJ and 3 others.) I have the ...Splendid Suns book here waiting to be read.
I just finished Loving Frank. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Loving-Frank-Novel-Nancy-Horan/dp/0345494997/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0625175-4811039?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190554008&sr=8-1"]Amazon.com: Loving Frank: A Novel: Nancy Horan: Books[/ame]

I just finished The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. A nice little ditty about what would happen to the world if we all left tomorrow. Great read.

Uh-oh. SJ must have borrowed from the jdarg film library.
I liked it overall, but it was hard to read considering I knew it was going to end tragically. Also, their story made the concept of "follow your heart" look not quite so romantic; there was a lot of sadness wrapped up in their love affair.

Uh, I think you mean great listen. ;-)

The Kite Runner was fabulous. Also, just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns - loved it. Reading Water for Elephants recommended by my sister-in-law.

A Land Remembered by Patrick Smith. It tells the story of Florida farm family in the 1800's and tracks them for several generations. A great history of the state and an exceptional book.

Water for Elephants is one of the most brilliantly written books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down. "Rosie" may be one of my favorite non-human characters ever written.

pv, I agree. Loved, loved, loved that book. Didn't seem on the surface like something I'd like, but I did. I've recommended it to so many people.
