NoHall, GraytonBound lives on top of a big rock in TN, so she probably doesn't have the sandy soil which we have.

 I didn't know that. Even so, the recipe works for NYC rooftops and backyards in Gainesville, GA. I still have faith in it!

Regarding using mushroom compost in your garden, if you use it, you better not use a fresh delivery, because it will burn your plants. Give it a week or two to breathe. I love mushroom compost.

'Bout time you chimed in on this. Where have you been? (The bagged mushroom compost is usually okay without the breathe time. Do you concur?)

Not all of the bugs on the maters are harmful. Some actually protect the maters.

A while back when I started veggie gardening, I read that planting basil and marigolds in the garden helped repel bugs. I have been planting them every year and don't have a bug problem.

It doesn't repel the chipmonks from eating my maters just when they are ready to be picked and they are wasteful little creatures. They chew a neat hole right smack in the middle and leave the rest.

Good question. I keep a close watch on them and look for signs of the bugs eating the plants. If I don't see those signs, I assume that the bug is eating other insects which might try to invade the maters.
I do know that in the past, I've had a problem with the Tobacco Hornworms, and I smash the smallers between my fingers. They eat the heck out the maters and mater plants. Google image them and you will see what they look like. They grow to rather jumbo sizes.

I have 2 really fat cats. They are useless. Although one of them caught one the other day, and brought it to me while I was planting flowers.
I thought it was dead. Laid there all stiff like with it's legs sticking out, didn't even blink. So I went to get the pick up and came back and all of sudden it jumped off the pick up and my cat was chasing around my legs. Looked like a scene from Tom and Jerry. I tell you, they are fat and useless.

I don't have anything like that, just these tiny little white or green things. I'll just keep squishing them.

If my cat weren't so old, I'd send him down to train yours. He's amazing. He (and his late sister) have been known to actually chase deer out of the garden. While I was at the beach, my dad told me that he was having a rabbit problem. I talked to my cat about it over the phone and we haven't seen any rabbits since. (He knows that I prefer he not kill the rabbits, just keep them out of the garden.)

On top of that, after his sister Anny was raptured, Hoot found Jesus. He won't eat his food until I ask a blessing.

My parents have a beautiful black cat who is strictly ornamental. He can't even squish a bug without throwing up...

I think the Tobacco Hornworms look really cool. You should observe them up close. They appear to have many eyes.

Nohall, I appreciate that. Maybe you can call my cats.
My cat did chase things out of the yard, dogs and such, but then he lost his OMB's and got fat and lazy. He's still cute though. Not sure how far you'll get on the phone with him though. He'll probably give you cauliflower ear. He's very chatty.

I did try to keep a ferile cat close by in my yard who had a head shaped like a block, hence we named him Blockhead. He even hissed at me when I fed him occassionally. I didn't have this chipmonk problemo or anything in the yard for a while while Blockhead was around, probably because he was so ugly and nasty.

I knew it was just an excuse for them to pee in the yard!

Did I say anything about the old-timers being male? :rolling:

I never met her or her tomatoes, but legend has it that my great-grandmother grew the tastiest ones in Point Washington. She never wore underwear to the garden.

True, I assumed the old timers were male, I only had males peeing in my yard claiming it was good for the garden, and the previous posts showed a picture of an old man and included a discussion of OMB.......

No undies............hello, mosquito bites in bad places!
