Vanderbilt vs. Hilton

If this isn't a "social issue," I don't know what it is. I didn't want to contaminate the lounge with this sort of thing.

I couldn't help it. I got home from class tonight and it was waiting for me like a bad wreck in my living room, and I had to slow down and watch it. Paris Hilton was on "Larry King Live."

I didn't post this to highlight that interview, but here are the highlights anyway:
  • If she ever had a personality, it was Botoxed. I've never seen anyone answer such a wide range of questions with such a narrow range of emotion. She says she has some movies in the works; I wonder if the studio could save some money by sticking in a cardboard cutout.
  • She says that she read the Bible in jail. She says she has always been a "spiritual person. I mean I went to Catholic school and all."
  • She doesn't understand the mean people who say she doesn't work. "I mean, I have all these businesses. Lots of them."
  • She says that being in jail matured her.

Yikes.

Anyway. The thing that really grabbed my attention was the commercial for Anderson Cooper's show, which was coming on right after Larry. I didn't watch it (I could only handle so much gore tonight) but Anderson was railing about how he was going to get to the bottom of all her wealth and privilege.

Thank you, Anderson. I'm sure that we all need to hear a Vanderbilt's criticism of a Hilton. Too bad we can't get some of J.P. Morgan or Rockefeller's descendents to chime in while we're at it. Sheesh.

I saw Cooper's show last night and he was critical of Hilton's beheavior. Maybe he thinks being priviledged is not an excuse for bad behavior.

Does he have a past??:idontno: I am not aware of many people that did not do things they regret later. Let's hope this is a turning point for Paris and she can be in the news for good instead of excessive behavior.

I should probably lay off the sarcasm (it was late when I posted that.)

His past is actually quite tragic. I'm too lazy to google it right now, but I think his father died. I know that his brother committed suicide. To his credit, he seems to have worked pretty hard to get where he is. As far as I know, he has behaved.

But it still seems ironic. Let him talk about her bad behavior all he wants, but he is in a strange position to discuss her privilege as an heiress. It just seems too obvious to me; even if there are journalists who came from more wealth than he did, he's a freakin' Vanderbilt. That name carries even more of an aura of wealth than Hilton.

So now I'm going to get off this dead horse and go to work...

Do we REALLY have to go to work????? 😀

Yeah, around here Vanderbilt is synonymous with success, wealth, and status. Someone mentions they/or family attended this school, folks fawn all over the person.

You need to read Anderson's book. The one thing I have admired about him is he has not lived off of his name or wealth. He did it on his own. His father died when he was young and his brother committed suicide when Anderson was at Yale and his brother was just out of college. His brother jumped off Anderson's bedroom balcony (Anderson was not at home at the time) right in front of his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt.

Honestly, I do admire him. Even so, it struck me as almost a conflict of interest to hear him railing on the Heiress. Not hypocrisy--I think that he has been deliberate in making his own way, and I applaud him for it.

It's just about impossible for him to report that story without saying, "Look, I'm a Vanderbilt for crissakes, and I never landed in jail for being a brat." From what I know, he's a great example of the whole with-privilege-comes-responsibility theme, but he can't just report the story (much less editorialize about it) as if he doesn't have the same privileges she does.

I think you are Vandy bright..too much wit for low intellect!

I live about 50 miles south of Nashville. A small town where everybody knows (or thinks they know) everything about everyone. Where did you go to school?

From your posts it sounds like the 2 represent the 2 extremes of a privledged family - one is an incredibly spoiled and useless celebutante who is living off family money and "fame" and is so poorly educated she never even graduated high school ............ the other is a well respected and hardworking person who just happens to come from money. I think he is quite right in criticizing her regardless of his background- especially if (as someone posted) he doesn't even use his family's wealth.

Fair enough.

Either way, I have to pass along this wonderful video of Anderson and his mother. (Obviously I love him; I keep calling him by his first name.)
