Given the track record, aid (in the form of Monty Python style multi-national troops) should be arriving on-site in about 36 months...

Just think, if each person in the US gave only $10 to help the victims, there would be more than $2,000,000,000 going to help these folks. We cannot change other's actions or lack of actions, but we can change our own. Donate today.

Very true.

Maybe we could just sell it all back to France.

True enough - but isn't this the "taunting bureaucratic efficiency" thread? ;-)

Must be smoking some pretty good stuff indeed. I was talking to a buddy of mine yesterday and we agreed (sadly) that we didn't think other countries would be sending much if any form of relief to the US on this disaster with the possible exception of the UK. With most of the world's countries except the UK not supporting the US on the war on terror etc, we feel that many will not support us on this disaster either. I'm not making any political statements here nor am I saying anything good or bad about our terror efforts around the world but just making an observation. I hope we are just being cynical and are wrong on this BTW.

The other thing we said was that the US was the only country strong enough emotionally, mentally, physically, and economicly to work to survive this type of disaster without other countries bailing us out. We are united and strong and we will prevail IMO.

On the way to school today, my 2 boys (12 and 9 years old) and I talked about the situation at hand in the gulfcoast and it's impact/ripple effect to many across the country/world and it was unanomous in our car that we are called the "united" states for a reason and it will take relief efforts across the country to help the people down in the southern gulf states get thru this. We discussed how we always seem to pick ourselves up off of the ground, dust ourselves off (if wet towel off), rebuild, and somehow come out shaken but stronger in spite of the disaster. I'm sure we are not the only ones having these conversation(s) and I am finding them humbling, educational (even for me), and a bonding experience for all of us. As SJ said in another post, these types of events will change people or at least may make them introspective and help them learn something new about themselves along the way.

Wish we didn't have so many of these "events" but if you take some time to reflect alittle they are educational, enlightening, and are experiences that can help shape who you are, who you want to be, or who you are going to be.

Very well said! I agree that we will probably not see any help from other countries, but we are a people that rise to the occasion in the face of disaster and help our fellow brother. No matter what your situation, you can help in some way - monetarily, physically or just by offering up prayers and concern. That is the American spirit at it's best!

Foreign governments line up to help after Katrina
This includes France. ;-)
Germany prepared to help U.S.
tsunami victims sympathize with Katrina

residents of Aceh, the most devout Muslim part of Indonesia, were praying for the victims of Katrina. But many in Sri Lanka are still living in rudimentary shelters and were unaware of the tragedy on the other side of the world. The tsunami killed around 40,000 people in Sri Lanka.
"Some people don't know because they don't have a television anymore," said Rev. Eraj De Mel of the Assembly of God, who is helping tsunami-hit families near the historic southern port of Galle.

Britney Spears from Kentwood, LA has put out a statement that she is "praying for all the victims." If she chose, she could give as much aid in cash as a small country.

Again, talking to my coworker yesterday we both speculated the Jehad (sp) terrorist faction in the middle east would praise Katrina and say that "she" was brought to the US by their god and that the US got what they deserved.

Sure enough I heard on the Bill O'Reilly Radio Factor that in fact that is exactly what they are saying thru their literature and announcements today. Cruel and evil people IMO.  :bang:

Earlier, President George W. Bush said in a television interview that the United States could take care of itself. "I'm not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn't asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country's going to rise up and take care of it," Bush told ABC's "Good Morning America."
What a master of foreign policy. How embarrassing. :bang:

Man it is one thing to proud and not think to ask for help but it is another to brag that we do not need anything but sympathy. From what I see, we could use some bags of greenbacks and some consulting on how to deal with a natural disaster big time. Sometimes in certain situations it is ok to put your hat in your hand and admit you been whipped and take the charity from others. Fine line we must walk as a nation at the top. We do not want anyone thinking we are whipped and that we are ripe to be taken advantage of (can you say OPEC) :idontno:

IMO "W" needs to drop the ego and pride bit and cry like everyone else. He looks like he is in emotional pain and he needs to let it out based on what I saw today on his bit with Diane Sawyer.

Oh maybe that was just constipation  Sorry I thought a little joke amongst all this chin scratchin would feel good.

I agree...IMHO....the world needs to see this country be humble and ask for help. Sure, there are lots of countries out there that may be enjoying this in some perverted way and many might just refuse our plea for help. But, in the end it just might help them realize we are not some huge "super power" that has a superiority complex. This is their chance to step up to the plate and show the world how important it is to help each other out.

I wake up each morning still hoping that the situation in NOLA is being sorted out. I, too am frustrated by the lack of preparation shown by all levels of the government. I have continued to give the benefit of the doubt to these agencies...but I am stunned that things keep going from bad to worse. Ted Koppel drilled the FEMA director last night and I had to leave my husband to watch by himself. I couldn't take the party line talk and the excuses of "We didn't realize it was going to be this bad!" Well, it is and what are you doing about it!!!!! Even Ted apologized for his demeanor towards the man, but hell, someone needs to answer these questions. But... before they answer, I pray someone takes control of this dire situation and gets some order restored. I continue to be proud of my country, but this is not a shining moment in our history. God Bless us all.

I hear you. Unfortunately, politicians tend to make poilitics more complicated than than this simple answer. :bang:

Not only should we accept and ask for help, neither of which have been done to my understanding, on a National level, but I think the Mayor of New Orleans was extremely slow in sending the SOS. LA National Guard, and other states NG, should have been in place, even if in boats, by the end of the day Monday. The Mayor should have expected the worst, given the make up of the many criminals that are in the city, and the situation with the city being under sea level. Is he an idiot? If the National Guard had been in place in strong numbers, perhaps we would not have people without water and food right now. :bang:

I am still perplexed that we can pilot bombers through places with missles shooting at the pilots, but we can handle a hoard of thugs with pistols, rifles, or shotguns to get needed survival supplies to our own citizens?:bang:
I hope all of you who want the Federal Gov't to increase in size and run more programs, will remember how the gov't has handled, make that not handled, this event.
