Step 1 in Flat Earthing any argument.............deflect onto irrelevant arguments...............

“Oh and John Edwards spent $400 on a haircut, so while you are so busy attacking the President –maybe you need to consider how many starving children in Africa that would feed.

Pat yourself on the back for being a cheerleader for a political agenda that kills little kids in Africa, and you call ME a racist!”

Thanks for the link, Bob. Sad that our country's head MD's brilliance is being stifled. :( Sometimes I feel there is truly not freedom of speech. :( :idontno:

Isn't the surgeon general tasked w/ promoting the general health and welfare of americans through education and advising the president?

What does bother me is when he wants taxpayers involved on something that the private sector can do better.

What is your logic behind this? Or is it merely knee-jerk conservatism, ie "the private sector will always do better that the gov't at any task".

Please contrast this poorly thought out knee-jerk reaction against the ABYSMAL failure of the private sector energy and security opperations in Iraq.

Fair enough. Of course, I flirt with everybody and everything -it's my nature. By the way, has anyone ever suggested a spritz of L'eau D'issey cologne to cure that whole skunk issue, everyone loves a good smelling ape.

Now, lets get back to discussing Prez Bush's habit of ignoring science, and medicine in the name of advancing an ideological driven political agenda.

Let's not discuss my nutz; although I do recall your fascination with my giggling buttocks from an earlier thread, and now who's being flirty?

Can we all come to a basic agreement that science, and in regards to this thread -medical science ought not be silenced or manipulated to forward an ideologically driven political agenda.

And that science ought to act as a directional beacon for US gov't policy?

It already is. I thought Bush and his cronies were still stem cells.

I stand corrected on the timing of the quote. That makes the statement downright honorable. Good man, that John Edwards. Maybe this time we'll hear "If I am elected president, my wife will walk away healed from cancer. Elizabeth, you won't need to bring that hospital bed to the White House."[/quote]

NOT funny!

Politicians that have enough empathy for others and will spend the time and effort to help find funding to advance medical science to find cures for diseases = GOOD

Politicians that have their own agenda and want to muzzle the surgeion general = BAD

I know it's not. I've spent the night on the cancer center at Emory's floor, so I don't appreciate empty promises to buy votes.

I'm no fan of Coulter. I'm making the point that it was a despicable statement, and putting it close to John Edwards' home. I have someone very, very close to me in about as bad of shape as Mrs. Edwards, so don't lecture me on that. Some of us deal with situations differently. I do my best to laugh about it.

Well is it funny or is it not funny? These 2 statements don't reconcile. Beyond that, no one running for office is promising a cure for cancer to get elected. I do hope whoever gets elected has the vision to not block research that may one day save or improve lives. Which is what Edwards was referring to. It may never be realized, we may never get the answers we want from stem cell research but blocking it ensures we won't.

By the way, I'm sorry you are struggling with the cancer situation, both my aunts died from the same cancer Mrs. Edwards is fighting, I know it's difficult.

Thanks. I meant that I do my best to make light of it, laugh at it, etc. which is my best way of dealing with a painful situation.

As far as the statement goes, my point was to stick it closer to home for Edwards. I know he'd never say that, but that statement is just as wrong as telling voters in Iowa that if Kerry is elected, people like Reeve will get up out of their wheelchair and walk. And again, Bush isn't blocking it, he's just limiting the amount of cash that the federal government puts into it. As I've said, I'm skeptical about stem cell research because if it was the end all cure all, then the private investment flowing into it would silence the researchers asking the government for money.

I too am sorry that someone close to you is suffering. Btdt. It sucks.

I presume this means you've read about clinical trials at least once or twice -- many of them are funded not by private research or drug companies but by federal funding, the kind of federal funding you derided in an earlier post. It is hard to argue that such funding for clinical trials isn't money well spent (at least in most cases!).

In the case of stem cell research, please tell me which companies would be likely to throw huge bucks into stem cell research. Stem cell research is not a "drug" that could be backed by J&J or Wyeth or Merck or Pfizer. It's not a medical device that could be developed by the device companies.

Also, since the various diseases that stem cell research MAY help cure down the road are so varied, it seems unlikely that the MS society or Alzheimer's or Parkinsons or spinal cord groups are going to get together and pool funds, because there will still have to be researchers working on stem cells and how they impact each disease. Plus those are non-profit organizations that don't have the kind of reserves needed.

So that leaves ... government funding, unless of course Gates and Buffett start throwing all that money of theirs at stem cell research. Who else can step up to the plate?

Great post tampa!

Limiting or blocking legal and ethically conducted scientific research in ANY way is bad!

Doing so because of a minority religious group whose views do not represent the majority of the country is even more wrong!

SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!!!
