I am surprised that michael moore's film is not playing anywhere in the area. i stopped by the new grandview cinema at pier park and the kid at the box office said it wasn't on the schedule to be shown at all !! what's with that :idontno: Is the area that conservative not to want to bring in a film by one of the most provocative as well as sucessful film makers ? if anyone knows where or when it will be shown within 60 miles of 30-A...can you post ??

This happens all the time. Some of us have wanted to lobby for a theater that would have independent and foreign films...it seems that not only can we not interest any business person in that...we can't get films like Sicko, etc.:bang: I am still angry that The Howard Group didn't build the theater at Grand Blvd as they said they would....it would be perfect for the Independent films....

Dont' know how much good it will do, but I sent Michael Moore an email concerning the fact that there are no theaters in our area showing "Sicko".
Seems that Rave Theaters would at least be showing in one of their many at Destin Commons.:idontno:
Here's his email if anyone wants to join me.

I went to the Carmike Cinema this afternoon to see the film. Michael Moore is an incredibly gifted film maker. He intentionally comes at the subject of healthcare and health insurance from a left position. He gives us the point of view of what is the greatest good for the greatest number. His film is thought provoking and is sure to be discussed quite extensively in the political season. The film made me angry as well as a little frightened about my own situation, even though I am well insured. Moore uses humor for comic relief . The universal healthcare in England, France and Canada as well as CUBA is startling compared to our system and infinitely better. !!! Well worth seeing. This is an important film.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I can tell you that I have many British friends and my mother lived there for a while.

In the UK healthcare is not totally FREE, but it's considerably cheaper than insurance premiums in the US. They pay their r premiums through taxes. Prescriptions are great though, I have to say. Flat fee for any drug of ?6.80, which is about $13.60 and doctors make housecalls.

The system in the UK is great for some things - like broken bones and some other routine and common ailments/things, but NOT for "unusual things", which is why so many go to the USA for treatment for that, if lucky enough to be able to afford to do that.

If you're above a certain age, there is discrimination. A man was told there was "no point" in another bypass op when he was 75 (he's now 85, so there was plenty of point!). Being the stiff-upper-lip Brit, taught not to "make a fuss", he didn't.

People there get much sicker or even die while waiting for treatment (chemo or heart ops for instance)- on the other hand many don't and they then get their free treatment. Waiting lists are long. I know someone who waited 6 months for an MRI and just waited 12 weeks to see a Gynecologist after being referred by GP about a problem at Christmastime - but it was "free".

Also, if you go to the doctor for something and think maybe they'll do a test (blood/saliva, anything), usually they do not but take a wait and see approach, which I used to find very hard to accept. Even my English friends would joke that it takes an average of six visits to the doctor for the same persistent problem before they consider a blood test. (cost).

There is also rationing. You get better or worse treatment depending on where you live; called the "postcode lottery" (zipcode lottery). So, if you have cancer, you might get Tamoxifen or Herceptin in one area, but not another because the local Health Authority can't afford the drug.

There are also terrible problems there in the hospitals with (lack of) infection control. People go into the hospital, maybe with something minor or minor operation, and not too infrequently catch MRSA or C Difficile while in there and either get very sick, or die.

I am glad about the comic relief though because most people have said they walk out crying.

Cannot wait to see it either- I am actually stunned they are showing movie here - there are so many movies in the past years I have wanted to see but could not (and was usually told that this is because people on vacation want easy light movies and not depressing, tough movies.

I went to see Sicko two weeks ago. After spending the last 22 years as a provider in the healthcare industry I have to concur that the health insurance industry is ripping us all off. I have to give this movie a B+ and recommend everyone take the time to see it. Numerous examples of abuse by the insurance industry that should have there heads spinning for a couple of months. I can personally tell you stories that trump the examples in this movie. More made a good argument with regards to Universal Health Care which I think (good or bad) will be the future for this country. I give him lots of credit of demonstrating how both political parties of congress have sold their souls to the health insurance industry. There is a very simple fix without going the Universal Health Care route but congress and every state legislature lacks to courage to confront the problem, which is simply remove the current ERISA exemption and state HMO laws that exempt the majority of abusive carriers exemption from liability (see Alabama's HMO exemption). These exemptions allow health insurance plans to not cover hospitalization, drugs, diagnosistic testing and a wide range of other services without any risk of liability. Yes, you can pay them loads of money every month for premiums and they get to decided the care you receive regardless if it disables or kills you. The settlements you occasionally hear about are forced settlements cause they have the law on their side. Only foreign diplomats have this same level of exemption from liability. All 50 states have similar language and exemptions. Why else can United Healthcare's CEO continue to be listed in the top three of highest paid CEO's in the US! It's the only industry in the entire US that has such high level of protection against liability.

According to Michael Moore, "Sicko," after less than three weeks in national release, has become one of the top five grossing documentaries of all time! So, this coming weekend, the distributor is expanding the movie by opening it in nearly 500 new theaters in small cities all over the country (for a total of nearly 1,200 screens nationwide)! From Rapid City to Carson City, from Gettysburg to Pearl Harbor, from Juneau to Battle Creek -- they're all getting "Sicko" tomorrow (Friday). He further states that scores of cities that never have a documentary come to their local theater will now be able to see this one. The entire country goes "Sicko" in less than 48 hours! (Check here for the complete list of theaters showing "Sicko" in North America.)
