The Canuck and I are planning a trip to the Keys in October. We will stay in Key West for three nights and then elsewhere for the rest of the stay...any suggestions..has to be funn, water sports during the day which is a given and play at night, but not necessarily wild bars, prefer the laid back atmosphere. It has been 9 years since we were there, right after Hurricane George/Jorge:yikes:  Looking at Marathon or Key Largo....

Thanks D! Why did your stepmother choose Key West? Does she go there a lot?

Your welcome.  She and my dad have made several trips to the keys diving. They love it there and love to party at Margaritaville.

I have stayed at the Pier House- it is lovely and has a small beach (hard to find in Key West).

Bathing suit tops are optional on the beach there.

FFF and I love The Pier House, we had no idea about the topless beach but you should have seen FFF's eyes light up when he saw the sign! Here are a couple of pics! that's me in the last one.

Here is the link: http://www.pierhouse.com/index.shtml

It is the best location to me it's at the end of Duval Street (you must do one of the Duval Bar Crawl tours) close to Mallory Square, the Conch train tour, it really is a town you don't have to have a car for. We always just rent those little electric cars to scoot around.

We had a lot of funn doing the ghost tour. Make sure you get Diamond Dave he is a true conch! Here is the link :http://www.hauntedtours.com/index.html

One of our favorite restaurant's for dinner is Bagatelle on Duval Street.

We also love A and B Oyster house: http://www.aandblobsterhouse.com/

One of our favorite dive bars is The Green Parrot: http://www.greenparrot.com/webcam.htm please pick me up a new pink t-shirt!

The conch train tours are informative and funn!

I will post more tomorrow night.

You have to fly in the seaplane to The Dry Tortuga Park, go pick up a virgin mary for your house, glass bottom boat, go on the seadoo tour, go to the cemetary....one of the grave markers says "I told you I was sick." go to the Hemingway house, The Truman house.

Are the Mary on the half shell like we have here in NY?

Franny, can't offer any advice since I have never been to Key West, but do want to go, so when you book that extra room for Tootsie count me in. :D

Have a grayt time!

Franny,

I've been to the Keys a couple of times over the past month.

For Dinner, try Carolines. It is on Duval Street (500 block I think). Great Carribbean food. The atmosphere is truly laid back similar to Cozumel, Jamaica, Bahamas, etc.....open air......chickens walking around.....and the food! Great and Cheap.

Try the Kingston Chicken. Half a chicken (spread eagle) grilled with excellent herbs, black beans, rice and fried plantons.....I had a REAL margarita and the total was under $15.00! One meal could feed Two....

Ask for LuLu:cool:

Enjoy!

A ole friend once told me to beware of the testicles that the jellies lose in the spring, believe she meant tentacles, but now I'm just not sure!:floor:

If you are going to Key West, go where the locals go. The best bands, no canned tuna used in their tuna dip! Get off Duval, find the Green Parrot and you will find a great time! Take it from a Floridian!

Franny,

If you are mobile, drive up to Marathon. Nice drive, about 45 minutes from KW. Once there, look for the little marina on the North side of US 1. It is about in the middle of town. If you get lost, stop and ask a local.

The marina has a small outdoor restaurant that is famous for their Lobster Reuben. yummy. Sandwich big enough for two with big chunks of spiny lobster.....

Great place for lunch. Picnic tables overlooking the water with huge tarpon swimming next to you......Great place for a "get-a-way" lunch.....

I agree with steeling1 on El Ciboney - I have to eat there everytime I go to KW - excellent Cuban food - in the middle of a residential area.

And Simonton Court is beautiful. They have small cottages, along with the big house, and beautiful grounds. Best I remember, this had something to do with workers that used to work in a cigar rolling factory and the workers lived in the small cottages. I liked it because it is right off the beaten path - just a block or so off Duval.

Have funn!!!
