I have never been on a cruise. I am planning my vacation in September for 1 week. I would like to take a road trip to south florida and get a cruise from there to the caribbean or mexico.
Thanks!

We took a cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Nassau on Princess Cruise Lines. It was wonderful and so relaxing. Get a room with a balcony overlooking the water....nice to see sunrises and sunsets and enjoy breakfast! I prefer the Eastern Caribbean to the Western Caribbean. St. Lucia and St. John are also beautiful destinations.

Is it really worth it?

Yes, IMHO. It's the difference between an indoor room in a hotel and one with a balcony. The breezes give the room a more open feel and we really enjoyed breakfast on the balcony ($1 extra for room service) several days. No need to dress up - we just sat on the balcony in our robes and slippers. The views were awesome! The only other cruise we took was in an indoor cabin - very small - it was a business cruise so we took what was offered to the group. Very different experience for us - also with a different cruise line.
needs to get out more
definitely get the balcony. I'd never go on another cruise without having one. also, check celebrity cruise lines, best service ever.

I know $250.00 is a lot, but it is well worth it. If you can afford to get the balcony you will not regret it!!! Good Luck!;-) SoWal Insider
Definately get the balcony. (Smuggle liquor on board and fix your own drinks to save the $250 if you must.)

Yes, the balcony makes all the difference in the world.

Yes, Yes, Yes! It is the best place to watch the sunrise every morning and a great place to have a glass of wine and watch the beautiful sunsets.

You might consider a cruise out of Mobile or New Orleans-way closer to SOWAL, but of course it depends on what destinations you desire to see. As far as Shelly's suggestion to cut costs, the old vodka in the listerine bottle with a drop of food coloring works (they check your bags for contraband!).

We did the Eastern Carribean last year on Carnival on the Valor. We ended up being upgraded to the Spa deck which has floor to ceiling windows (but no balcony). It was awesome! The balcony would have been wonderful to have, but we were very happy with the huge ocean view and a bit larger room. We had heard all the drunken party stories with Carnival, but we didn't find this to be true at all. The ship mostly had families and our kids loved the cruise. This probably varies depending on cruise length, destination and date. We went to St. Thomas, St. Maartin, and Nassau. We took tours that were recommended through cruisecritics.com and they were a fraction of the ship tours' prices. I loved the cruiseebecause I didn't have to think about where or what we were eating for 7 days. The food was grayt.

Also, be sure to ask if they offer a Florida resident discount. ;-)

If you have kids going then Carnival is great b/c of their camp.
Royal Caribbean has a camp as well.
I agree with John R. Celebrity is my favorite cruise line b/c of the service by far....
I have not been on a princess cruise but my mother (who had also been on the other 3 lines that i mentioned) went on one and loved it as well
I personally prefer the Eastern Caribbean than the Western. Mexico and Jamacia do nothing for me, but that is just me.
I would do whatever it takes to get a balcony room. It is soooooo worth it. If you go PM me and I can email you a cruise tip list of things to bring....
The only problem with the cruise line out of Mobile is that it is an older ship and there are only about 10 suites (not just balcony rooms) and they fill up fast. For a first cruise I would leave out of Port Canaveral. Easy to get to and larger and newer ships than Mobile, Jacksonville, New Orleans or Tampa
Shelly is correct, go to some of the cruise critic websites and read other peoples comments. Remember though, some people will complain about anything. It is what YOU make it...
Have funn planning.......

Good idea Skunky. Last cruise we were on (and the last one EVER!!!!), they took my whiskey away. I had to buy their bar stuff that was twice the price I would normally pay in a bar. If you buy duty free on ship, they give it to you when you leave.
People trying to make a living out of these things sure mess up my playhouse!!!!!
