The early buzz is two big thumbs up !! It starts Friday nationwide. I think John Travolta will be a real hoot as Mrs. Turnblatt !!

I thought this was some new play about to open at the Seaside REP.

He looked hilarious in the previews I've seen so far! Very unlike his recent action roles where his little twitches and mannerisms were starting to annoy me.

The play HAIRSPRAY is on BDWY in NY. It won like 12 tonys 3 years ago. It is based on the director John Walters original screenplay. Its the best musical in NY if you get up there. The film should be GREAT. For real funn, rent the original film with DIVINE as Mrs. Turnblatt and Ricki Lake as Tracy. Tracy's dad was played by Jerry Stiller, Ben's dad. The original has been a sort of a cult film.

No, but we're going to see it performed this fall at Purdue.

My daughter got into Hairspray when it got hot on Broadway in 2003 and won Tonys. She bought the soundtrack, and we loved it! There are some great tracks on that CD. Can't wait to see the movie. There's a guy (Elijah Kelly) from Georgia who is one of the stars and has been getting a lot of press.

Saw "Hairspray" at the Grand last nite. It was spectacular. John Travolta is going to be an Oscar nominee if not the winner, as will be the picture !! The audience, which was a packed house, was laughing and clapping as though it was a live performance. What was neat was that there was a cameo by Rikki Lake, the original Tracy Turnblad, and Jerry Stiller had a role in the film too, Tracy's dad and Edna"s husband in the original. See if you can spot John Waters, the directer and writer, of the original film.

Guess I should have scrolled down before I started the other thread, but I took in "Hairspray" at the Rave last night. It was FANTASTIC.
Very rarely do I care to see a movie twice, but I may have to drag Fuzz (and maybe kicking and screaming, Squirt) to it over at the Grand.
BTW, does the Grand have those annoying little poorly-lit steps as the Rave with its stadium seating does? I despise those steps.

The friend who went with me had seen it before (on Broadway and in the theater) and hated Travolta in that role. I thought he was wonderful. (But I just finished watching "Grease" to put him back where he belongs in my mind's eye...)

Wish I had read this before I saw it. I didn't see Rikki Lake (where was she?) and wouldn't know John Waters if he bit me on the rear. But I thought it was funn that Marc Shaiman was one of the "Bye Bye Birdie" agents. Loved the movie. Might go see it again with my parents. (Usually when my dad sees a preview and says he wants to see it, it's a shoot-em-up. Mom is excited that he wants to go...)

John Waters' cameo cracked me up. I was laughing so hard the lady next to me got up and moved a few seats away.
Great great movie. Everyone in the cast is fantastic, especially Elijah Kelley as Seaweed (he looks like Sammy Davis Jr!
)and Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad.picky
This is the funniest thing. I just got an e-mail from our local movie theatre about the Aug. 3rd opening of Hairspray. The first night of the movie is a sing-along. The lyrics are going to be printed on the screen as the movie shows so you can join in with the cast. This might be the best thing since Rocky Horror Picture Show. Popcorn anyone?

Went to see it last Friday with Beach Jacket who had already seen it. To get me in tune with the movie, we listened to the soundtrack on her iPod on the way. The music is great. Then as soon as the movie started, I started smiling. I didn't stop smiling until is was over.
As a Georgian, I was proud to see twenty-year-old Elijah Kelly do so well. I highly recommend the movie.
Only thing -- we can't decide if Big D would like it or not. Although not his favorite genre, he likes musicals. Do y'all think it's a chick flick?
Mermy, that sounds like funn!

Sorry, I could hardly watch John Travolta in this role. It was just weird to me. Overall I liked the movie but didn't love it. Dreamgirls was better..imo.
