I saw this article outlining a hypothesis regarding our waning honeybee stock. Pretty interesting.

Interesting theory, and just another reason why we don't realize how our actions might affect things without our knowledge. What if, by spraying pesticides, we are eliminating an animal which eats the parasite? I'm not suggesting that this is the case, but what if? Life is very sensitive, and just like me with a magnifying glass when I was a kid, I could kill many lives without any thought of my connection to them. If you really want to open your eyes to the life cycle, watch the documentary on the Fig Wasp. It is incredible, and shows an incredible number of co-dependent animals all related to this one Fig Tree. Watching it will remind you of our interconnectedness to all which is around us.

Another interesting article on the subject I read recently on Slate:
Bee Not AfraidThe disappearance of the honeybees isn't the end of the world.

"Few people realized that the honeybee apocalypse was already over. We may continue to associate them with childhood sugar rushes and chubby-cheeked fertility metaphors, but in real life honeybees have been virtually extinct in North America for more than 10 years, their absence concealed by a rogue's gallery of look-alikes. The stragglers have been kept alive only by the continued ministrations of the agricultural giga-industry that needs them. "

From the South Walton County Mosquito Control's website:
"Depending on the type of chemical used, the spray might kill some individuals in certain species of butterflies or caterpillars... When the chemical is applied as directed, adverse effects on populations of non-target animals, like mammals, birds, and fish, are actually absent or very minor. However, some insects (for example, honey bees) could be killed by mosquito sprays."
http://www.southwaltonmosquitocontr...rflies? Do they kill good insects and birds?

I wonder what happens when the chemical isn't applied as directed? What happens when the mix is too rich, or the diluter on the spray trucks malfunction, making the mix too heavy with poison, etc.?

I found this information on the Mosquito Control's (poison center -- let's call it what it is) website:
"Does Mosquito Control spray for things other than mosquitoes?
That is very interesting because I thought they also sprayed to kill the Dog Flies, which are only aggravate people. If there statement is true, Skunky's theory on them targeting the Deer Fly population is not true either.
"Does Mosquito Control spray for things other than mosquitoes?
Mosquito Control exists only to help prevent health problems caused by mosquitoes. The pesticides we use are only labeled for the treatment of mosquitoes. We are only licensed by the State of Florida for mosquito control purposes. For these reasons, Mosquito Control does not treat for ants or other pests. Consult a pest control company for treatment of these pests."

Actually, I don't have a theory-I know that the spray whacks yellow flies and those biting gnats. I think that if you kill three menacing pests for the price of one, it is a victory for the taxpayers...and make no mistake, if the population of biting pests was left unchecked, you would have fewer taxpayers to foot the bill for everything. That is my theory, anyway.

How is it that I have sprayed 2 cans of toxic poison on the yellowjackets in the lamb's ear (dead) and they are still there? :idontno:

How do you know the poison also kills yellow flies and gnats? Do you really believe that only three types of life forms are killed by fumigation?
I would find it very odd if the poison sprayed in SoWal only kills the life you find objectionable.
I am not advocating abolition of pest control but rather being cautious and using the safest and best methods available. As a newcomer to SoWal you may not yet realize that things that happen here are not always the best for taxpayers. That is more than theory.

No doubt that spray kills many things beyond three types of insects, I don't dispute that. However, just by observation, it does not look like pest control of this nature is clearly related to wholesale elimination of any species of native invertebrate, much less vertebrate. And while I may be new to Walton county, I have with the exception of four years of my life lived south of I-10, and know what a miserable bind we would be in if we didn't eliminate biting pests. And as a former resisdent of the most corrupt state in the Union, I know that we need to make sure our taxes are spent in a responsible fashion. Now I am going to bed, good night SOWAL and beyond😀

Yes, I was PUI'ng. Here is the last thing i am going to say (hold the applause) on this subject because the horse is scary dead. I don't think there is a danger of killing off any large population of insects and other invertebrates via insecticides. Remember, the insects, arachnids, crustaceans and other arthropods were all over the planet way before the first tunicate type critter decieded to pop out a notochord, and were around on the order of millions of years before the smallest dinosaurs arrived...and they are still thriving. And if I were a betting man, I would put my money on them inheriting the planet after whatever the next doomsday event is. In fact, we couldn't eradicate a species of insect, much less numerous species, if we set out to do that on purpose-no way, it couldn't be done.
I appreciate your concerns about the health related effects on humans and other larger animals. You are doing a good thing by making sure the county applies these poisons as directed, and we all need to use common sense with home application. With that said, the data shows that when used according to label instruction, the insecticides are safe.
Now, I am going fishing. You guys have a great day and enjoy whatever it is you are up to today!😀

Skunky, who said anything about eradicating a species? How many members of a species have to die before you deem it unwise? At what point is a food chain and ecosystem permanently damaged? I don't know the answers to these and many more questions but you seem to, so please don't stop posting about the subject, and be sure to attend the meetings and educate the rest of us.
In fact, we couldn't eradicate a species of insect, much less numerous species, if we set out to do that on purpose-no way, it couldn't be done. Then again, when you make such a sweeping statement like this, maybe better that you stay silent. No offense brother but they sound like infamous last words to me.

If the Board of County Commissioners cannot follow their own rules, what makes you think that a person, mixing and spraying poisons all throughout SoWal, making maybe $10/hour, is actually going to apply the poisons exactly as directed?
Regarding the other comment that man couldn't eliminate an entire species of insects, I'm sure you are right, just like man couldn't eliminate the Bald Eagle or many other animals. Only when you think that you have NO effect on other living creatures, that is the time you are likely to have the greatest effect on them.
