Tammy Faye Messner

I just watched parts of Larry King's interview with her, then read the CNN story. She was always somebody that we snickered about- the PTL, Heritage USA, the makeup, so I never really paid attention to the goodness in her life- and in the end I hope she is remembered for her goodness. I'm not a go-to-church every Sunday religous person, but I will remember Tammy Faye as ultimately kinda cool.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/21/tammy.faye/index.html#cnnSTCVideo

Her faith was so strong and it was repeated several times that she had absolutely no doubt where she was going when she died. And so courageous up to the end- I don't have that much courage and I am healthy! She was such a bridge between the Christian community and people living with HIV. And her faith never waivered despite being tested over and over and over.

So God Bless Tammy Faye- she is where she wants to be, with her makeup looking good I am sure.;-)

Thanks jdarg. I already miss her. If you saw her on The Surreal Life, you learned that she really was a very accepting and generous woman.

Jdarg, I couldn't have said it better myself. She was truly a kind person.

I used to snicker at her too but through the fall of the PTL club and Jim Bakker's scandal, I realized what a strong person she was, for her kids and for her faith. She was pretty amazing.

jdarg....thank you for posting that Larry King Snippet. I had missed it and was so taken with Tammy's peace and the words she said to the people at the end. This was a very humbling moment. These are life changing words to lean on.....God bless her family.

jdarg: I must admit, I knew very little about Tammy Faye besides her make-up and crying and earlier evangelical stuff that truly seemed to be one big SNL skit. when I saw this post, I was thinking, why is this a headline CNN story, and is this just an old Paris Hilton lady who has no business being famous to start with. thanks for making me pay attention and learn a little more about this woman.

Your post encouraged me to actually watch the Larry King interviews and read more about her online (I saw her on Larry King the other day and was horrified at her appearance - I was wondering what the heck she was doing on TV - but I was not interested and did not watch).

I have only just learned about her huge heart, her childlike genuine faith, and how her friendship and love really made a difference for so many including gays.

She deserves such tribute. Like someone said in response to the following blog, I hope God lets her wear mascara in heaven.

I am usually not shaken easily- but after seeing her interview and seeing how much she didn't look like herself- I cried a little. Cancer is such a horrible thing.

God bless anyone who can stay stong in a time like that.

i liked how she always kept her faith and kept her head high, no matter what was happening in her personal life. i also felt very sorry for her at the end, she was obviously suffering. r.i.p tammy faye

She asked to be on King's show.

I found her more beautiful at the end than in her "hey day"- her bravery trumped her vanity.

She and Larry King are very good friends, and she asked him if she could come on the show so that she could "talk" to her fans. Her faith so inspired me.

Most women have vanity issues, not just Tammy Faye. So I believe it took great courage for her to appear on national TV. I never would have thought Tammy Faye would want to be seen in public being anything less than pretty. She put all those thoughts to rest by her visit on Larry King. The poor woman was so ravaged and ill from the cancer I was amazed she could even sit up. Rest peacefully Tammy.

Don't forget that her former Husband and her stole millions from people who trusted them. Guess people's memories are short.

Well, I would think that Larry King had ratings in mind to some degree when he booked her to come on the show; I mean, that's how media works, correct? In terms of what she was thinking, I would guess she graciously accepted the invitation to be interviewed because she wanted to let people know how she was doing and see that at 65 pounds and 24 hours away from death, it's still possible to be upbeat and positive.
Beachsteelers, I honestly don't think anyone forgot that--have you ever seen her named mentioned without that fact included in her bio? And, evidently, the courts decided her husband was the one primarily at fault because he did the time. Why you would want the American public to define her by that rather than the good she ended up doing is kind of sad.

I thought this was only Jim Bakker. Wouldn't she have gone to jail had she been guilty also?

No I remember. The courts took care of it, so I'll not pass judgement. That's between her and God. I wasn't a fan then or now. I was sympathic to her suffering as she was dying. It doesn't mean she's a saint. Luckily that's not asked of us.

who could forget this? apparently she didn't have a clue about what was going on in the financial side of the biz.

heard a repeat of a fresh air interview (NPR) this morning with Tammy - she got around. and I was surprised to hear her say that she and the gay community had agreed to disagree. even though she accepted them she did not believe in their lifestyle. she felt that she needed to reach out to them anyway. also, the drag queens just love and adore her and often dress like her, make up and all. who knew?

I do not like her PTL involvement, and have always cringed at her looks. But, I think she was sincerely loving and kind.

not to offend anyone, but just to state the facts ... these two were nothing more than upper management of a very profitable Christian message system in which they used to promote a very high scale lifestyle for most of the 1980's.

The unfortunate truth is that they stole millions of dollars and lived quite lavishly in their time.

We all know the facts. And as I stated before, I am a religous skeptic on a good day, and it goes downhill from there most days. But I do believe that people can do bad AND good things in their lifetime, and I was commenting that I found it interesting that so much good came out of her life, when it had the potential to be bad from beginning to end. I wish everyone that did such unjust deeds could at least attempt to atone like she did.

Give her a break. She has passed. She'll pay her debt to God if she's got one. SHE wasn't put in jail. Blame Jim!

C'mon Bob, the woman had cancer. I hope everyone who saw her realized how avoidable her early death was...she had rectal bleeding for two years but didn't have it checked out because her physician was male and she was embarrased. Not much anyone can do if you let colon cancer have a two year head start. Please folks, if you are better than age 50, have a screening done for colon cancer:(
