The "collector or packrat" thread got me thinking. We have a lovely home. There are only my husband and I living here. My husband said to me just last weekend...WE NEED TO HAVE A YARD/TAG SALE...I must admit, my beautiful clear counter tops are clear no more. Art covers our walls. My clothes closets are full. It takes our poor cleaner about an hour just to dust the stuff on our shelves. My linen closets are full. Our drawers are full...the pool house is full...the garage (down and up) is full...our walls are full of art...our storage areas are full. I grow orchids, which takes up more room. I seem to have every pot, pan, gadget, etc., etc. that I will ever need or use. I know my husband is right. We have to give away, donate, sell, throw out stuff. But my trouble is that I can't seem to part with any of it. To me, it is all useful, good stuff that I NEED! I watch those "organization" shows and it appears to me that I am emotionally attached to my stuff. How sad is that?!
Anyone else?

Whooo Hoooo! I've made some headway. My closets (both clothes and linen closets) have been purged!!! My kitchen counters, shelves and pantry are now in order. I hate to say what I found in the pantry
...be that as it may...the pantry is now in order and I could still feed an army. My kitchen is humongous. Who knew?
Now...the gallery and the storage areas...lord help me...I just don't see it happening
My husband still thinks all his stuff is indisposable!

I've been avoiding this thread.
:nono1: No, No! As I recall, you got me in deep doo in January or Febuary with all your, "I got all my craft stuff organized and blah, blah, blah." FBB saw that and was on me like a duck on a june bug! Closets, drawers, all kinds of stuff got organized at my house after that.
hmmmm......can't remember

I SHOULD have avoided this thread, but I didn't, and it upset me so badly I had to start my own thread.
Ignorance of cleanliness is ungodly bliss.

I think I come by it honestly. Going through my daddy's files I found old greeting cards I'd sent him dating back to when I was in college. He still had the "beautiful" lopsided paperweight that I made him in the 2nd or 3rd grade. Let's face it, there's no hope for me, it's genetic. Here, here. But I have tried and it continues.
PS No one used china anymore. I have two sets and I don't even think my girls need it.

Well, as I said earlier, I've made some headway in getting rid of some of my stuff (including my prom dress that went eons ago, which, I found out in another thread may be worth big bucks now...
). But now I know that I am emotionally attached to a lot of my things. Along with my grandma, my Aunt Jean was a pivotal person in my life. As an example of her influence upon me, when I was from 5 to 10 years old, we lived thousands of miles apart. Each December, we (the 4 kids in our family) would wait with baited anticipation for her Christmas parcel to arrive. When the large brown paper and string wrapped parcel came, it was opened by my mother with us all standing around it. Inside there would be six exquisitely wrapped parcels; one for each of us and one pretty box of baked goods. Not only was each present beautifully, artfully wrapped, but there would always be something extra affixed to the top, along with the ribbon and a beautiful bow. One year in particular stands out. My parcel had a Laura Secords "book" of life-saver rolls attached to it. Laura Secords was (don't know if they still are) a chocolate/candy company extraordinaire! I loved life savers (especially the butterscotch ones) and couldn't believe my eyes or luck to have all the different kinds in one "life saver book". Her gifts were always thoughtful...like a jewelry box I received one year, that played "Swan Lake" while a little ballerina twirled round and round. After we had moved much closer, we would be invited for "sleep-overs" at my Aunt's. She would always make a fuss over us. For instance, she would "roll" butter pat spheres with a criss-cross design for our blueberry and syrop pancakes and fresh-squeezed orange juice, which were served to us on a pretty china breakfast set. She would also set her wrought iron patio table with her sterling silverware for us kids to use. She made us feel like kings and queens. Such wonderful memories.
Too late to make a long story short
, but to try to get to the point of my "tome", I am now the caretaker of that Louis XV silverware, along with numerous silver plate pieces that I remember seeing and using as a pampered guest in her home; as well as many other pieces that I can't seem to let go of. Someone here said that no one uses china any more. I don't imagine that silver is often used any more either. I know I rarely use it, even at the Holidays.
To make matters worse, I've collected chaffing dishes (several different ones), beautiful salad bowls, plates, platters and other things over the years. I know I'll hardly, if ever, use all this stuff. I think, in part, I keep this stuff around me to keep these wonderful childhood memories in tact
What to do?! I think this is a rhetorical post
Perhaps it will provide cathartic relief!

We use the "nice stuff" whenever possible, it adds so much to a meal, makes folks feel special, and it seems a shame to just keep it in the cupboards. Plus, it isn't a hassle if you have your kids doing the polishing and washing!
