If the Republican nominee is Juliani, then the conservative right will stay home and not vote. Juliani's strong record on abortion rights in NYC, his favoring of gay civil unions, etc., will all come out.

If it is Mittens or Fred is the Republican nominee, yea, the conservative base will come out "in droves" because abortion, gay marriage, stem cell use, etc. will then be made into the Repub's big issues in upcoming TV campaign ads--but, strategically this will backfire because there are deemed much bigger problems in the country right now by most voters.

You might be right as we are both looking into a crystal ball. But I think you are being profoundly optimistic. There is perhaps no figure in current US politics more polarizing than HRC...there certainly will not be any running in 2008. I used to think she would easily win in 2008, but as time marches on, I am not sure which red states she flips to blue by going left of Kerry. You also assume that all Democrats will vote for her...remember, she is polarizing, and many people simply do not like her.

VOTE CLINTON 2008. Please send money HERE>>> HillaryClinton.com - Welcome

Well she is now on a roll now...Obama is smart and will be a factor, but not in 2008. She is at the head of the pack.

The republicans are all too busy trying to look, talk, act (yea), and comb their hair like President Reagan (who, as a middle of the road Democrat, I really now appreciate now historically--especially compared to the last 7 years of disaster, if you get my drift!). also,....

"Mittens" Romney can't keep his stories straight yet.... McCain's fire is gone...Fred Thompson--who? President "Fred?" ...and then there Juliani-he will be the most formidable republican againts Clinton, but if Juliani is the candidate, the most conservative republicans will stay home and not vote at all since he is a social liberal...which won't help things for them...so Hill wins, and she can send Bill out world wide to patch up the U.S's negative image abroad. The US can be admired again, ie respected, i.e., then therefor SUPPORTED in their endeavors world wide.

Amen, sista!!!

Beware of anyone running, who wants to be President. That would have to be the crappiest job in America, so the only reason someone would want to be President would be for the power. We've long passed the time when people ran for political office for public service and to help make this a better country.

I agree. I have also become wary of anyone so keen on a candidate/platform that they can't even listen to other views. What a freakin' old person I have become.

I lean towards Thompson since he knows how to communicate and is conservative enough for me to live with, but I like more of Newt's ideas.

:floor: ...except, they are bashing each other right now. Then they will be retracting all the negative things they said about their "family" come election time. Brutal, just brutal....especially to us citizens that have to listen to this for over 1 1/2 years. :bang:

This Democracy or Lobbyocracy thang has gotten pretty stale for sure....

Do you think a Republic (and to the Republic for which it stands) could work?

Only in America.....do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

SJ, on this post I couldn't agree more and it is a crying shame that it is true. Also, it is waaaay to early to be listening to Presidental political rhetoric. When did we get to the point where we start more than a year before the election, anyway?

I would add that running and winning political office is the easiest road to riches outside of working for a hedge fund or private equity fund. Edwards and Romney are double dippers. The pols of today are tomorrows multi-millionaires.

Before the 2000 election, both parties were courting him but his wife said she'd leave him if he ran. And now that the dems can trot out the "He lied and misled us" card, I don't think he's electable. Further, I don't think he could take a primary, even in this weak field. The GOP needs a pretty clean break from this administration.
