Bro and SIL are here visiting and want to spend Thursday over in the Mobile / Fairhope area. They plan to visit Bellingrath Gardens & would like to take in a couple of other "sights", possibly do some antiquing & have a good meal (preferably seafood).
Any recommendations for restaurants, antique stores/areas, historic sights?
Thanks one & all!

If they're interested in military history, it might be worth taking a tour of the battleship. Mobile Art Museum was also nice for a small city art museum when we went through it a while back.

Fairhope reminds me of some town out of the movies, very beauftiful, well manicured with a Mayberry feel. Did yu know that you can not own land in Fairhope, leased only. There's an ice creme shop with a historian running the place. Worth the trip and cute shops.

So you recommend the original location downtown? I see on their website that there is a Wintzell's on the Eastern Shore in Fairhope...have you ever been to that location? I think we're going to be in Fairhope towards evening...

The lady at Oakleigh House recommended Guido's for lunch...have you ever eaten there?

Or ... maybe we should do original Wentzill's for late lunch and then hit the old Ice Cream Parlor in Fairhope that Franny mentioned for "dinner". I've been to the ice cream parlor...it's a charmer!!!

Thanks everybody!!

I showed up just as they were closing the last time we were in town. I haven't tried it but everyone always recommends it.

Another that I hear is really good for dinner is The Fairhope Inn. 251-928-6226

I've only been to the original location on Dauphin St. My brother, who lives in Mobile, says none of the others are as good. I remember reading in previous posts where Peapod visited Wintzell's very recently. Maybe she'll have some input.

Definitely visit the USS Alabama battleship. Fort Conde is supposed to be good (if you like exploring old forts).

It's been 40 years since I was last in Fairhope. But I do know they've always had lots of mom & pop type restaurants with home-style cooking. Skip the chains. It really is a very beautiful, quaint town. My parents were checking it out for our family to possibly move there. The town looks as if it's from a Tennessee Williams play.

Be prepared to prespire more than you ever have in your entire life. Mobile is so hot and humid (to me, anyway:roll:).

Try breakfast or lunch at Panini Pete's Cafe & Bakeshoppe in the Fairhope "French Quarter" downtown. Everything is made from scratch and delicious.

Thanks Everyone for all your great suggestions! We're leaving tomorrow morning @ 5am...with enough plans for the day to be rightfully considered "packing a watermelon into a banana peel"!! I'll let you know how the "packing" goes!!

Speaking of Mobile, my husband and I have reserved and paid for a room at the Holiday Inn Mobile at Tillman's Corner which is 10 miles from Bellingrath Gardens. We plan on visiting that Saturday morning and would like to tour the Battleship also. But does anyone know of any good restaurants in Mobile that have great steaks??? We do not eat any seafood but love steaks and Italian food. Thanks.

Ruth's Chris isn't to shabby for great steaks. There is one located in Mobile.
