hmmmm......can't remember

I read the thread about cleaning out stuff earlier tonight and thought, "Hmmm. This would be an ideal time to clean out that big box of letters under my bed."

Funn things:
  • 30-something years of birthday/Christmas/Valentine's Day cards from my family
  • Forged Thank-You Notes from my niece and nephews
  • Wedding invitations from everyone in the whole world, complete with newspaper clippings and shower invitations (I'm thorough)
  • Baby announcements from the people who stayed married

Surreal things:
  • Long, long, extremely intense letters from people I don't remember at all.
  • Letters of apology from people who hurt me really badly, some of them written years after the injury
  • Love letters

Can I address that last list, please?

I found a letter from someone who was a dear friend of mine in college. For whatever reason, I had no idea that on May 7, 1991 that he was in love with me. I just thought he was writing me a letter that said he loved me like a buddy. Bless his heart. He still managed to send me "normal" letters after that. (Are any of you in Birmingham? Will you find Michael for me? If he's married, will you break them up for me?)

Then I found one of the two letters the great lost love of my life sent me in college. I thought he only sent me one letter in college. (This one was also dated 1991. What planet was I on that year?) I can't even talk about that one.

And, yes--long, drippy, sweet letters from people I don't even remotely remember.

I really need to take up drinking again. Right now.

Still feeling puny, but not as cranky as I was a couple of days ago. I don't get so much hormonal as just tired of sitting around at home.

Went to the doc for a prolonged case of what my folks call the "cain't help its." I was coming home every day by noonish with fatigue, headache, body aches, and a sore throat. None of these were acute except the fatigue.

Doc ran blood tests Friday (including a mono screening) and I'll get the results tomorrow. He says that whatever it is, it looks viral, so rest and fluids for me...and more time sitting around at home...

 ...what a bummer. Ya' know, sarafunn's friend just got diagnosed with mono...had it for weeks. Get better!!!

I should at least find out tomorrow what it is. My doc is grayt; he's been taking care of me for about 3 years, and I'm rarely sick at all. Oddly enough, he told me that besides rest and fluids, I should keep exercising if I felt like I could. I guess it metabolizes the virus faster?

Thank you all for your get-well wishes! Now that the weekend is over, I'm going to cease and desist all whining. (In other words, I'm gonna put on my big girl panties and deal with it.)

BACK TO THE THREAD: This could probably go under "Stuff that makes me happy." I just got an email from my old friend.

I have an ancient piece of paper taped to my dresser mirror that says:
"We meet many people in this life as we go through it.
Some will fill minutes, some hours, and some, a year or two.
And then, there are a precious few who touch a place within,
And whom we know deep inside that we will meet again and again."

When those people seem to have disappeared and then reappear, it reaffirms my conviction that life and love and friendship is much larger and stronger than we often realize.

Good news: Not mono. (Thank GAWD!) Bad news: Don't know what it is. My options are to get better by Wednesday (which would be fine with me) or go back to the Dr. then...

Going to bed. Thanks for the love, Dr. Wenches!

So tonight I'm in Birmingham on my It's a Small World reconnoissance adventure (which, so far, has been a grin-fest!) and I feel that I need to share this with the class:

My friends' band played in a little gallery. It was a chair-sitting event (it was jazz, y'all) but the bar was kind of behind the stage. This dude walks by wearing a (drumroll) Red Bar t-shirt. During the break I asked him if he lived in SoWal. He said, "No, but she does."

I turned to the girl he indicated, and it turns out she lives near Stinky's. We talked for a while about the amazing food served there, and I asked her if she haunted SoWal.com.

"No, but I have one of the stickers on my car!"

(I didn't ask her if she was worried about residue.)

Teeny world, y'all.
