Did anyone else see the small shark swimming along the shore in Grayton this afternoon? It was only 4-5ft in length, and fortunately, no one freaked out, running on top of water to escape the "jaws" of death (snap!). In fact, I didn't see anyone really reacting to it, and people stayed in the water without incident.

Glad to hear no one freaked. But I was at home watching the start of "SHARK WEEK" on Discovery to see how many times our area was mentioned this year.

The Gulf was kinda deep (above the waist) and the waves kinda big today- I kept looking into the waves as they washed over us, expecting to see something big.

I was taking one of those Encarta quizzes (yes, I've been home too much lately) and it said that there are more shark attacks in Florida than there are in Hawaii, which surprised me.
It said that most were on the eastern coast, though.

From what I learned on TV today sharks are not that common in Hawaii. But they are seeing more there in recent years that are migrating. From what i gathered the sharks there are just starting to be studied and only seem to appear a couple of times a year. But they say they are BIG whites when they do show up.

Saw two in about an hour and a half yesterday.

Not surprising when you consider the number of people in the water in Florida versus Hawaii.

If you want a real adrenalin rush, paddle out in an 8 ft kayak, past the second sandbar, and begin thinking about the 14 ft Mako Sharks swimming around in the Gulf. Then, try to breath deeply and enjoy the moment, filled with excitement, fear, and gratefulness.
Someone told me about numerous sharks spotted along the beaches of SoWal on Sunday, but mumm seems to be the word on SoWal.com. Anyone see the sharks in great numbers?

I saw 10 to 15 one footers @ the end of last week, but nothing that would raise the blood pressure.

I saw one on Saturday morning in Seagrove (Pineapple Palace - across the street from Cowgirl Kitchen -- yummy by the way) It was about 4 to 5 feet and really close
It just swam on by, it did take me a few hours to get in the water after that though.

Thus far, it is only the story as told to me by one person. I'm still waiting to see pics....was it like a convention or an advertisement for Shark Week?

Here I am! OMG.....it was incredible!
Picture this.....Afunn, Cork, IBD, Lisa_at_the_beach and I are lazing around the Watersound Beach Club pool sipping mojitos (I was not, I had to drive back to the 'Ham so don't say I was siu) when goofer44 calls me from the beach (he knew we were lounging around the pool) all excited and tells us to "Quick! Get down to the beach, there must be 40- 50 sharks swimming around!"
Well trying to get a bunch of mojitos drinking SoWaller out there quick was like herding cats! Afunn and I finally left them and went on out. OMG about says it all. When we got to the beach everyone was out of the water pointing and looking.....I saw them! goofer44 and I were standing about calf deep till one road a wave in really fast not 10 feet from me and it looked like it was gonna beach itself it came in so fast, so I got completely out of the water. They were probably anywhere from 3 - 5ft long. Odd thing was....you never saw a fin break water there were just these dark shadows and then when they got close enough you could make them out. Man, those things are fast! Interesting note....there was a huge swarm of seagulls flying around and feeding also, must have been a bunch of bait fish.
Oh yeah.....the other gulls made it down and saw them too. So, I have witness. I tried to take pictures but you really can't see them. It was an exhilarating sight to say the least.

I'm wit choo. You would think that SJ and the rest are reporting on finding a nest of bunnies out there. Sheesh.
SJ--I know where to find a couple of yellow jacket nests up here. Wanna come pull ivy around them for me? Maybe we can find some copperheads and rattlesnakes, too, and just, um, enjoy them.

It was incredibly exciting to see all those sharks working their way east, following the bait fish. We were told they are black fins
Not harmfu,l but since there was a feeding frenzy going on out there, discretion was the better part of valor. I am sure they would have been nipping at toes and ankles or any other appendages that were moving about in the water !! I will be extremely cautious in the future going out in the gulf....only will swim when there are at least 5 or 6 other people out there, preferably more tasty and appealing to the shark pallette than me !!

Now don't go there with me. I greatly respect all of the animals which you mentioned. I can leave wasps and bees undisturbed and have no problem with either, but Yellow Jackets scare the ba-geezers out of me, and you will find me safe inside a house if someone wants to fcuk with them. I had some bad instances with Yellow Jackets while working at a National Wildlife Refuge back in my high school days. I can stand far enough away from the Copperhead and Rattlers, and neither are very aggressive. However, those Yellow Jackets -- screw that. I don't know what it is like to be bitten by a Rattle Snake, but I know what it is like to be stung by a crap-load of Yellow Jackets, and I don't want any part of that craziness.
Goofer, just remember RiverOtter's advice. It doesn't matter whether or not you can out swim the shark. What does matter is that you can swim faster than your buddies in the water with you. ;-)
On a serious note, if you see a shark while you are in the water, they can sense things like heart rate (fear/excitement), so the best thing you can do, is to quietly (and quickly) make your way to shore, keeping a level head, not panicking. While it isn't likely that a Black Tip will come chasing you down, when everyone panics, and runs toward shore, the sharks get very excited and may begin to go after the bait (you) as it splashes around in fear of its life. So, keep your cool and enjoy the madness as a part of your life.
