who have sent there "Babies" off to high school this year. I can't believe that the day is here. It was with a heavy heart that I watched my son get in a car this morning to go to high school. It just made me realize that I probably only have about 4 more years with him at home. I am sure it will fly by. So, to rest of you that have done the same thing, or will this month, I will keep you in my thoughts. May they all be safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sacks of $$$?, duffle bags of $$$?

Wait 'till they go to college. It will be great big dump trucks full of $$$, and not just 5's and 10's.

We are talking sorority here. beer busts (I know, I know, our little darlings wouldn't do that. We did it, didn't we?) parties, clothes, $150 text books, PC's, cars, spring break trips, OMG I am so glad itty bitty seaside is only working on her PhD. The end is in sight!!!:yikes:

Ain't that the truth. We're envisioning great big dump trucks too. :yikes: We thought we were carefully planning ahead years ago only to find out that will take care of only a small portion! And we're not even talking about fraternities (lord help me...) either.

Try to steer your kids toward in-state public schools, if it's possible. And the sad thing is, for us "older" parents, our retirement is right around the corner, +/- a few years.

Mr. JR and I lie awake at night worrying about this! I'm fairly sure I'm going to have to go back to work full time & NOT at home but at a REAL job. Not real happy about that. So this means even less of a possibility of us getting to the beach, AGAIN! :bang::bang::bang::bang:

THAT'S what we lie awake at night thinking about, a $150k or $200k student loan.

I know that some will disagree with me, and that is fine. I have financial advisor that I watch a lot on TV. I was watching one night and they were talking about this very subject of college tuition. A caller called in fretting over paying for her childs college education. The financial advisor had this to say: "You have raised your child and spent a lot of money doing it. Just because you have a child that wants to go to college does not mean that just because you are the parent you should worry and spend your retirement money on that childs education. There are student loan programs, scholarships, grant programs and such for the very reason of helping kids get to college. When that child gets through college, then said child can pay those student loans back with the good job that said child is going to have after they graduate. It teaches them responsibility and builds their credit. We as parents should NOT spend our retirements, cash out our 401ks just to send the child to college. What are we going to live on in our retirements? And also, when the child is paying his/her way then they are more likely to get good grades and do what is expected of them.

JohnRudy and husband, you should not be worrying and losing sleep over this. You also should not feel guilty in the least. You should be enjoying your life. There are so many other things in our lives that make us worry. I for one, chose not too.

We are not using one penny from our retirement for college. We know that our retirement has to come first, college tuition 2nd. We're just worrying like most parents do. And as for you, if you choose not to worry, well hey, that's o.k.

Anyway, Miss Kitty, we are hoping for scholarships but that's something you don't find out about until the very last minute upon acceptance. In the meantime, there's the hope for flawless auditions. And then after it's all said and done, it will never be a great paying job in the end.

Now maybe if he was an engineer like his dad, you know, a practical, normal profession, then maybe he could eventually pay back a college loan. But I can't see saddling him with a $100k student loan. And that's what most liberal arts colleges run these days.

Also, I'm not feeling guilty over this. It has been lots of fun. Scary, eye opening, exciting, and definitely fun.

(Sorry KDW. Maybe I've hijacked your thread??)

I remember that day very well and it does fly by so quickly. Mine starts her last semester tomorrow at Ole Miss, talk about time flying by quickly. Seems yesterday we took her down to Oxford and moved her into the dorm in 100 degree heat.

Well the heat is the same but no moving in this time as she has been in an apartment all summer. I will go down tomorrow for the traditional book buying. It will be the last and while I am glad I will not be buying anymore over priced books, I just can't believe it is the last time to do this.

Come January she will be neighbor to many of you as she does her internship at Sandestin resort.

We won't even begin to mention the amount of money her time at Ole Miss has cost us, but it was worth every penny.

Enjoy those high school years, parents.
The husband took our youngest back to Florida State this weekend (he was there for summer session, too.)
Our nest is empty but our memories are forever: From the 1am phone calls to the scholarship announcements at graduation. ;-)

Jdarg! I didn't realize this was Kate's first day! She will have everybody charmed by the end of the week. :D

Were y'all able to decipher Will's schedule? I ended up re-writing Wesley's on a sheet of notebook paper. I'll need help again when second semester rolls around! I hope they have at least one class together.

We are off to a great start. Kate didn't cry, and neither did I!!

We had a nice surprise at Will's orientation last week- his first period drama class has a new teacher- Herr Klinglehoff from The Underpants!!! I walked in the room, pointed at him, and said "I saw you in The Underpants! Twice!!!" Of course Will wanted to crawl out of the room. :floor:

I went straight out and pounded the pavement, trying to figure out if I was happy or sad. Guess it's a bit of both.
