the Deed's Been Done

Just dropped off Baby Girl at college. We spent yesterday packing her up (preceeded by all week shopping so she'd be going off in style ;-) ), strapped the Es-Car-Go to the top of the SUV, loaded it up, and started off bright and early this morning.

I was fine until we turned the corner to her dorm to join the long line of parents with cars stuffed to the brim with gear. Then it hit me that this is where Philippa was going to be for the next four years, and the tears started flowing and there was no stopping them. Merman looked at me and said "Stop crying! She's not getting married!" So I put my dark sunglasses on, sniffled at bit, and then I was fine. Whew. That was a close one. :lol:

We actually had a really good day. We were so impressed with what a well-oiled machine Purdue is. I suppose with 40K students arriving every fall, you lean how to process them pretty well. There were traffic cops and volunteers everywhere. They even had valet service! We stood aside as our car was unloaded and all Philippa's worldly goods were brought up to her room. Better than being at the Ritz.

And the room was sparkling clean. I was shocked! I had my can of Lysol ready to disinfect everthing in sight and I didn't have any cause to use it. Fyl's up on the 8th floor and has a magnificent view of mature trees and rolling hills. She's definitely not slumming it. What a good introduction to dorm life!

There was a very thorough presentation for parents that covered all aspects of living at Purdue. The Dean of Students was there, the Bursar, the Fire and Police departments, and more. All the resources available were discussed, whether it involved an academic, financial, health, or person issue. We came away with the impression that if any of our students needed help wiping their bums, there was probably a department that could handle the problem. :lol:

We left the campus and our daughter knowing that she's off on the ride of her life. She can tell us all about it. When she comes home this weekend. 😀

Ooooh, have no fear about the well of Pippi stories drying up, even if she a) never calls or b) calls too much c) or ???. In any combination of circumstances, there will always be a Pippi. And a tale to tell.

Mermy...this can go three ways (from my and my friend's experience) as far as hearing from Pippi...
1) she never calls/emails because she is having too much funn, disclaimer...she will call when they NEED money! this one drives parents crazy
2) she calls everyday, after every class and every meal because she is a wreck. this one makes parents crazy
3) she is the perfect child and calls often and shares all the news with you and lovingly answers all your questions without zoning out. this one is usually a lie from crazy parents

I am sure there are more examples...these were the top three with me and my friends. Both of mine were closest to number 1, sarafunn was better than the male one. 😀 :wave:

OMG...this is so exciting!!!! Please keep us posted!!!
You 've got that right (the three reasons for calling).

Better no calls than ones from the Dean of Student's. Itty Bitty's best friend in her undergraduate days.:yikes:

No pics? :idontno: You wouldn't let a little runny mascara stop you from taking some, now would you? ;-) Did you faux paint her room? :lol:

I'm envious because I think it would have been a grand time living on campus. I commuted to school in the city. Campus rooms aren't even big enough for a cochroach in the apple.

I think all your NYC cockroaches were kidnapped by Purdue graduate students. Don't believe me? Take a look at what's going on at our State Fair every year on Purdue Day... :floor:

Purdue Day will showcase Purdue Agriculture at the Indiana State Fair

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University agricultural events and displays will highlight Purdue Day Aug. 15 at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis.

Purdue Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The universitywide exhibits on Main Street will be displayed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"Purdue Day is one of the most anticipated days of the Indiana State Fair," said Danica Kirkpatrick, events coordinator for Purdue Agriculture. "Alumni, friends and supporters come to experience the exhibits, activities and overall fun that we add to the fair."

Purdue Day, which is also Farmer's Day, will include several activities, demonstrations and events for all ages.
Activities on Purdue Day include:

* Educational programs on the Purdue Live Stage on Main Street from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Women in Agriculture awards presentation in the Our Land Pavilion at 9:30 a.m.
* Farmer's Day Parade on the infield track at 10 a.m. with Purdue Extension corn specialist Bob Nielsen as the grand marshal.
* Cricket-spitting contests under the grandstand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
* Live food demonstrations in the 4-H Centennial Hall kitchen at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
* Cockroach racing at Roach Hill Downs in the Our Land Pavilion at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. *
* Purdue pep rally on the Purdue Live Stage on Main Street at 5 p.m.

I'm afraid to think of what the "live food demonstrations" are all about. Maybe those grad students are going to spear the cockroaches that don't win the race and roast them on an open fire??

You don't EAT 'em--you SPIT 'em! (for distance)

Sad that I know that.

Are they alive when this happens? Seems like that might help the distance with their jumping added to the spitting.

Hey it's early. I thought it said cricket splitting, not spitting.
Crickets still have to be better eats than a cochroach.

My son has eaten them at camp in past years- cajun cooked crickets, in a skillet over the campfire.😱
