The Walton County BCC has passed the first reading of an ordinance to limit the colors that can be used when painting a building in the scenic corridor. A member of the design review board has said that with the soon to be included 30-A scenic corridor it will just be a matter of time before they start 'cleaning up' 30-A and getting rid of the horrendous colors in that part of the county. He also was very happy that LSU purple will no longer be allowed as a paint color in these areas of Walton County.
I do not live in either of these areas, but am concerned that as these sort of restrictions start to expand how they may one day affect me. Am I missing something here or is the unique character of a beach community in regards to colors and expression now a thing of the past?

So glad they're focusing on the important issues - what colors people are allowed to paint their homes and businesses, instead of minor issues like problems with the hurricane evacuation plans, overdevelopment, corruption, and high taxes.
I have a long list of ways to "clean-up" or make the 30-A corridor more "scenic" and wasting time and money on paint swatches is not on it!!!
How about burying those pretty power lines that run the length of the 30A?
Or cleaning the multi-use path of trash, gravel, and sand to make it easier for everyone to use?
What a waste of time and resources!!!

When did South Walton County become Hilton Head?

Where's the list?
I bet my pink isn't on it. I hope it's not all taupe, black and white. I like bright colors, like red, pink, and green.

I understand that you can see the 465 shades of tan at the Walton County Planning Department in south Walton.

needs to get out more
waltondude, you're joking right? i can only hope so. i've heard of stepfordlike hoa's controlling certain colors, but the county really has no need to concern itself with paint color.

I thought they had ruled years ago that anything on the "scenic corridor" had to maintain the 3Ts.....(tan,taupe,teal)??????

The colors have always been subject to approval by the DRB along the Scenic Corridor. The problem was that someone repainted the exterior of a building with a non-approved color -- purple.
So, the county said that repaintings now must also have color approved by the DRB.
The county also adopted a list of colors similar to what they had been allowing all along.

What actually consitues the "scenic corridor"? A couple years ago when I wan't looking my mother had our house painted Radioactive Waste Green. Eglin AFB probably uses it as a visual checkpoint, now...
Ride by Goatfeathers and see if you can find it on the north side of 30A with your eyes closed!

No different from what politicians do in general. They present a minor issue that turns into heated discussion, and drives the focus away from the important issues, which they know are phucked up, and may be over their heads.

I am not joking. Restricted legislation is being passed by the BCC, comprised of five, think they are Republicans. They have trouble standing up for freedoms of others. All just sit and get fat and sappy increasing taxes, increasing regulation, and decreasing freedom. They want you to think they are all poor country folk just trying to do the right thing. It appears that they are being exposed.
I kind of like purple, but it offended some of the DRB so now it has to go. The DRB is now wanting to clean up 30-a and get that all homogenized so as not to shock their sensibilities.

My house in Memphis was in Evergreen Historic District. The city regulated new construction, demolition, and remodeling (i.e. anything requiring a permit) according to a comprehensive design code. When you bought in the district the covenants were part of what you signed at closing. The whole process was fair, well accepted, and effective.
But here's the interesting point...
They regulated absolutely nothing about paint colors. The premise was simply that construction and demolition are permanent changes to the neighborhood, but paint can and will change over time.
So, if you live in an area of SoWal without a HOA (i.e. not in Rosemary, Alyce Beach, etc.) who cares?

Homes are supposed to reflect their owner's personality/taste. Can someone please explain to the politicos that "scenic" doesn't mean homogenized, overlegislated, and bland!!! Bright and funky colors are part of 30-A's appeal.
I'm don't see why someone can't paint their house LSU purple if they want to. If the neighbors don't like it, there are a variety of landscaping and window covering options available............and far better things to be worried about!
