Anyone from or currently living in New Orleans? I am considering moving there in January for my internship in clinical social work, and would love to get some insight into life there post Katrina. I will have to finalize my decision (to stay or go) relatively soon, so there is definitely some anxiety. I think the resistance that I am feeling stems from safety issues- although i get the feeling from many of the people that i have talked to (that either live there now, or have family/friends living in the city) that crime is concentrated, and that with the proper precautions I will be "safe". While there is no guarantee, no assurance of safety in any city, I just wonder how accurate the perception of crime in the city is. Any thoughts, opinions would be appreciated.

I don't live in Montgomery, but just curious why you are choosing to go there? What were your other options for internship?
I am a health care recruiter here in Northern California. ( no, I am not trying to recruit you
)
I only know a little about the social work internships and was just curious.

I bet Dr. Skunky could help you with this sarafunn....he just moved here from NOLA.....his sweet wife Rapunzel came ahead of him. He seems extremely happy to be out of NO and here in SoWal, but when you live there you never get it out of your blood. I lived in NOLA for a long time many years ago. I miss it terribly....but after Katrina it just isn't the same. It's not that I feel less safe there now then I did many years ago (as it never felt safe then)....there's just such a feeling of unease about the city. It's just a city that's got a long way to go from what has happened to it and the people. And, you are right, there are no guarantees that another city can assure safety.
I am sure you will get some grayt advice from others SoWallers....this was just my late night thoughts.

Have a good friend that has lived in NOLA for years....she's about to be given medical orders to leave. Constant infections and a strep/respiratory illness that just won't go away. It appears this is the case with many that are still living in New Orleans, so there's other issues to consider including crime rates.

Sara, I found these two articles you might find interesting. If I was a bit younger and single I would be there in a heartbeat. As we have discussed before, as long as you do not enter the world of illicit drug sales you probably will have no problem with crime. I am not sure what the story is with the person with Staph infections and respiratory ailments, but I was on the front lines and never noticed any mass outbreak of Staph infections. There has been a term dubbed the 'Katrina cough' ever since the storm, and indeed, shortly after people returned and began gutting moldy houses, there was an uptick in respiratory symptoms like coughing. Since that time, data collected shows the city's air is no higher in environmental irritants than what would be expected, and in fact, it is cleaner than Atlanta and the big Texas cities due to the absence of a billion cars. It is a great city, like nowhere else and this is probably a once in a lifetime chance for you to do so much for so many people.

thank you thank you!
thanks for those articles, and for your thoughts. i think there is a lot of misinformation circulating, and its hard making this decision without having been there to see for myself. guess it will just be a adventure.
now that my safety issues are relieved, lets talk neighborhoods. i have contacted tulane, hopefully they will be a good resource and im gonna spend the morning trying to find some updated maps of the city. let me know if you have any current info on that.

Here is a nice neighborhood map;the number of neighborhoods is staggering and confusing to 'outsiders'.http://www.gnocdc.org/mapping/docs/Neighborhood.pdf
Tulane's uptown campus is within the Audubon neighborhood. You can find nice places to live in any of the neighborhoods swooping along the river from Audubon up into Bywater. Most have their own personality, just google the neighborhood names and you will see. I think you would be most satisfied living in Audubon, Uptown, Touro, Irish Channel, Garden District, Lower Garden District or the CBD (AKA Warehouse District). A little further out are the French Quarter (I wouldn't move there right off the bat), Marigny (funky) and Bywater (really funky). Look at Craigs list and you will see what is out there.
This is where I lived, Algiers Point. It is directly across the river from downtown, linked by the bridge or the ferry. A great place to live if you are working downtown. http://www.algierspoint.org/

SaraFunn, I have never lived in NOLA, but have visited many times...I love it.
If I were younger I would definitely consider going there now to do some service work...however, if you have never been, I would highly suggest a long weekend visit before you make a decision.
NO is unlike any other place on earth...that's one of the things that makes it so wonderful...but, it is different. Not sure how far it is from you, but a trip is not only a funn thing to do, but also would help you know whether or not it "touches your soul".....before you make that commitment.
Just MHO....good luck!

Yeah, but I think sometimes my font runneth too liberally
I tell Rapunzy when we go to Rosemary Beach, we certainly have strolled into Gatorland, and it has nothing to do with the institution in Gainesville

I think the old fashioned Italian family that runs that institution takes the Catholic day of rest seriously. I can't fault them for that

Thanks for the help. Had to work through the anxiety, I'm feeling good about the decision. I'm in the process of emailing agencies now!

I don't know, but I know it was closed on Monday, April 30.

Hopefully he is banned for good...or at least until his predictable return like menstrual cramps.

In any case, if I were young and had the chance to do NO again (at least for a fixed time) I would jump all over it. It will change your outlook on life, much like living in Europe. Just be careful and always aware of your surroundings.
