mr. dd and I just went shopping for vitamins and minerals. Stuff his doctor recommended. $100 later, they look so healthy sitting there on the counter. We bought fish oil, flaxseed oil, VitE, VitC, Centrum, and CoQ-10 (I think that's what it is..). Skunky, did we miss anything...your thoughts please..and anyone else who's a vitamin junkie. :idontno:

I guess it depends on why he was urged to take them in the first place. I am a fan of flax and fish oil. CoQ 10 is trendy right now and promised to cure all manner of ills, but I don't think the evidence is there except for modest at best lowering of blood pressure. Except for select scenarios, a multivitamin like centrum will give you all you will ever need for supplement purposes without taking extra vitamin C, E, etc. And I always encourage people to buy the generic multivitamins. If you have not opened the bottles yet, I would bring back the CoQ 10, C and E for a refund.

Thanks, that's kinda what I thought and what I had heard. I'll pass along the info to mr. dd. I read a lot about the benefits of the fish and flax. mr. dd's attempting to quit smoking...an on-going stuggle around here, as you know.

I was shown a similar picture from my 8th grade biology teacher who was hooked. She didn't want us to end up like her. Seeing the photo of the charred lungs was enough for me to not take interest in smoking. She should have shown me that when I smoked my first cigar when I was in the second grade and I wouldn't have smoked for those early years.

Beyond the cancer, I just can't imagine coughing every day and not being able to taste things. :(

Dammit, it was fun. I don't miss smoking as a habit, but I would love to be able to smoke an occasional cigarette and not get addicted, have guilt about it, or have to hide in the bushes to do it.

I really wanted one after the "shark incident".:floor:

I bet you did!! And don't you just hate people that can smoke a pack in one night and then never pick up another one until the next "shark incident"?

All it took for me was to live with two smoking parents and go to school every day with that smell on my clothes.

Skunky- that describes my mother perfectly. Unfortunately, she doesn't see it that way and tells us that her doctor says her lungs are fine after smoking for over 35 years. She blames it all on her diabetes. .

 You're talking about me! Although I have to tell you that when you get out of the habit of smoking, after a few years you don't want to smoke a cigarette even though you could smoke a cigarette, just because they smell bad to you. It's actually kinda disappointing (in a peverse way  ) because I used to love a good smoke.

Kreteks were my favorite way back in college but not the time I was smoking one at a crowded bar and the barkeeper smacked it right out of my mouth because he thought it was something else.

I bought a bag of the flaxseed meal at Trader Joe's but I bet you can get it at any health food store. You just throw a few tablespoons in everything and you get healthy.

Thanks, sweetie! I've read about it a lot lately. I'll be gettin' some of this meal too! I hear to add it to cottage cheese for the double whammy effect.

Hi DD:

I agree that all you need is a good multivitamin, and maybe the fish oil and flax seed. I'm not a doctor/pharmacist/etc., but I used to take some extra things like E and C but then read that they can actually back-fire (e.g., reduce life spans, though that could have been a quirk of the research). Mostly, I just read a lot in health magazines and yahoo home page and ask my doctor things. The multivitamin is good -- though I heard that name brands like Centrum are best because they are less likely to have lead in them (I believe I read that in Consumer Reports - what do you think Skunkape?).

As for smoking, remember that I have a nice present for you when you quit. SJ can do the scary technique and I'll do the reward technique. They both should work! Since quitting smoking is likely to increase your lifespan and quality of health/life, just think -- you'll get to spend many more of your sr. years partying and relaxing in SoWal.

OL, I was thinking about the flaxseed meal since I recommended it. I use it in baking only as an oil/butter substitute, but then I realised that it might not exactly taste very good and here's DD thinking of sprinkling it on her food! So I tasted it and lo and behold it doesn't taste yukky at all. So go ahead, DD, and buy some and be all healthy! It is Mermaid-recommended. ;-)

BTW, I bought some quoinoa (spelling?) which is a grain on the order of couscous, because I read it was so good for you and it was absolutely disgusting. Nasty taste. So stay away from that. No one needs to be that healthy.

dd - quitting has to be easier than what my brother is going through now: One lung, round the clock care, $200 a day antibiotics to take care of the second round of pneumonia, not enough strength anymore to cough hard enough to get rid of fluid build up in his good lung, thus breathing treatments. (broke 3 ribs earlier in a coughing spell)

He's 60 yrs. old and I remember him saying "Something will get me anyway." This is not how he wants to live now.

Please do everything you can to try to quit 'cause it has to be easier than the potential outcome down the road. :(

We want you around for a long time with all your craziness!

Sorry for the heaviness of this post but it's been a rough summer w/illnesses. And his could have been prevented with a lot of work. :bang:

Rita, Thanks for your concern and I'm so sorry that your brother's having such a difficult time. My prayers are with him and your family. I will do all I can to eventually stop and get mr. dd to also.
