Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown is no longer the man in charge of the Hurricane Katrina federal relief effort.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Friday named Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad Allen to replace Brown. He said Brown would report back to Washington.

Where does personal responsibility come in this mess? So many people have become too dependent on the government (federal, state and local) to solve all their everyday woes and when a catastrophe comes along they are paralized to help themselves. I don't want to be harsh, just thinking and typing outloud.

...We are not investing in our country's infrastructure and that unwise action is gaining on us in terms of horrific damage and loss of life....

Right on!
Short term mentality. Do enough to get by today, but spend money today while planning for tomorrow, never. The amount of money needed five years ago to improve the protective systems surrounding NOLA, would be much less expensive than rebuilding the city, not to mention the billions of dollars spent in relocating the people displaced by Katrina. That is just the direct cost in dollars, but this storm cost much more than money.

I don't know that NOLA would have survived a direct hit from a Cat 4 or 5, even if the water systems had been upgraded. From what I understand, NOLA was not greatly affected by Katrina's winds.

You are right about the levees SJ, but when was anyone going to ante up with Bush spending a billion plus a week for the circle-jerk Iraq war. One month in Iraq would pay to upgrade the levees. NO is a one of a kind situation. Unless your going to start berming all major coastal cities. Andrew just missed the heart of Miami, and Hugo went just to the north of Charleston SC. Sooner or later, another major city is going to get smacked hard.

I wonder what Senator Landrieu did to prepare for or prevent this disaster? :idontno:
IMHO they all share the responsibility for the lack of a plan and a lack of response.

"Get off your asses" Nagin. What a role model.
Really. What a classy guy! NOT! Yes, I would have been upset enough to have used that type of language in private, but a person in his position shouldn't speak so crudely in front of TV cameras. It's just not professional IMHO.

Ditto - Beach Runner. There is enough personal responsibility to go around.

The problems in NO have been around alot longer than the Iraq war. A close look at our Federal Budget would find lots of spending on ridiculous programs -money that could have been used to fix the levees. I don't share your view on the Iraq war but that is probably a discussion for another thread.

It would be a great debate, because hindsight is clearest.

What do you think of Michael Brown's resignation today? Will this action make him the scapegoat for the failure of the rescue and recovery process? Just wanted to hear your thoughts.

:clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1: Wonder if he'll go back, to Horse Duties? Hopefully, this new man will have more spine! Wow, I just knew the first time that I saw him on TV, that he wasn't a very strong man! I can generally spot them, from a mile away! :idontno: :idontno: :idontno: I qualified that by saying "generally"! We've all had some nightmares :bang: :bang: :bang: , unfortunately! Hmm... :lolabove: I think that's why I've chosen not to date, for over a year! Though, this board and the seemingly interesting men on it, give me hope! :clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1: This board and the people on it are fun interaction, without the CRAP! :welcome: :clap_1: :welcome: :clap_1:

:clap_1: I think this is probably the most profound statement I have heard since Katrina hit. This is what it's really all about. Our society has become so dependant on others to care for us, that we seem to have lost the ability to care for ourselves. Government has for so long taken responsibility (and accountability) for us - FROM us - that we no longer hold ourselves responsible or accountable for things that we should. It's a sickness. We self-inflicted with perceived helplessness.

Do you wonder what Michael Brown is thinking now? Suppose he's relieved that he's been removed from his hurricane relief duties?

He's probably riding his horse off into the sunset, marveling at his good fortune!

Beachdreamer...I remember being a little cautious when typing that...not wanting to sound callous. Of course gov't has helped...but some of the best and most inspiring stories have come from neighbors and strangers alike helping out those in need.
