I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've lived in the south 22 years and have never been to Savannah, Georgia. :idontno:
I'm making an out of the way sidetrip, going to be there all day, for one day, Friday September 28th, then heading to Greensboro, North Carolina Saturday night to see
VAN HALEN.

Sunday I'm taking the shortcut (10hrs) through Atlanta and will stop to play for a few hours in Six Flags.

However, for that one day in Savanah, even the next morning for breakfast, I'm looking for Sowalian Suggestions as to must see SG (SavGA)-Especially for photo-ops. I'm into architecture, design and history. Oh yeah, and FOOD. ;-)

So any homes or points of interests I should take visit and take shots of, and places to eat for Lunch, Dinner and Breakfast would be greatly appreciated.:D

Thanks,

dka:drink:

Never been...sorry, My fav song by VH is
Panama

Jump back, what's that sound ? Here she comes, full blast and top down. Hot shoe, burnin' down the avenue. Model citizen zero discipline Don't you know she's coming home with me? You'l lose her in the turn. I'll get her! Panama, Panama Panama, Panama Ain't nothin' like it, her shiny machine. Got the feel for the wheel, keep the moving parts clean. Hot shoe, burnin' down the avenue, Got an on-ramp comin' through my bedroom. Don't you know she's coming home with me? You'll lose her in the turn. I'll get her! Yeah, we're runnin' a little bit hot tonight. I can barely see the road from the heat comin' off of it. Ah, you reach down, between my legs, ease the seat back. She's blinding, I'm flying, Right behind the rear-view mirror now. Got the feeling, power steering, Pistons popping, ain't no stopping now! Panama, Panama Panama, Panama
I can see you singing this....

I've never been to Savannah myself either. Am planning a trip to North Georgia to do a bit of trout fishing and spending a couple days in Savannah and along the coast of Georgia approximately the same time. Maybe we can get together and I'll let you buy me a drink

I'll be wearing these:

I have only been once, but knowing what interests you, I advise you to go downtown and look around the area near SCAD. A number of cool shops, old churches and houses, cemeteries and of course, the squares. Wear comfy shoes!

There are some decent restaurants along the river in Savannah, but if you want good eats and a great atmosphere you should check out The Crab Shack! It's on the road between Savannah and Tybee Island just beyond Ft.
Pulaski. Here's a link...

Try the Olde Pink House, 23 Abercorn, 912-232-4286. A 1880-type building but very elegant. Nice bar and fireplace in the basement. We've eaten there many times. Don't forget the shecrab soup! The last time we were in Savannah we didn't have a reservation and there was a 2 hour wait.

It is a beautiful city. You can see the Forrest Gump bench and there is a tour for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil book, known to locals simply as the Book.

There is a great trolley tour that will show all the best of the city and the 24 squares they are famous for. You can get off at any stop and get back on at your leisure.

There is ghost tour at night if you are into that. It was fun. The Mercer House is famous for its architectural style.

The Pirate's House built in 1794 and now home to a famous resturant featuring a maze of rooms.

Independent Presbyterian Church was founded in 1755 and is considered to be one of the most important Federal style designed churches in the country.

Savannah is very compact and there are several good walking tours.

Famous places to eat, Paula Deen's Lady and Sons, Mrs. Wilke's (breakfast is heart attack waiting to happen) and the Pirate House. Of course with that comes large crowds. Lunch at Mrs. Wilkes is the most crowded.

The Crabshack that was mentioned is really good and Tybee Island has a beautiful lighthouse.

Clary's Cafe has been a favorite since 1903 but became famous after the Book. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Exchange Tavern and Restuarant on River Street is the oldest restaurant on the river. It was once a cotton warehouse.

Thank's y'all! I can't wait to get there. An avid fan of "the book" of course I finally have to do that tour. However I hadn't considered Tybee Island-and I love lighthouses!
I can't get enough Paula Deen so her restaurant may be a must see.
Love the suggestions- keep 'em coming!

I'm so jealous that I can't even breathe. What I wouldn't do to see Van Halen again...

Have you heard of Cumberland Island off the coast of southern Georgia? Wild horses run free on the beach.
Wild horses running free on the beach = crap on the beach, and I don't mean tents.

Mrs. Wilkes, she's no longer, but her place is still serving. Am I correct on this??
