A friend who's joining us at the beach is going to be bringing some kites, including one of those fancy two handed trick kites. But, it got me thinking...is there etiquette to where one does and doesnt fly a kite? We do it at our stretch of the beach without thinking, but it's not too populated. How do ppl feel about it at public beaches such as the state parks, or grayton? Obvoiusly we'd be off to the side somewhere, as much as possible, but you never know, I thought I'd ask...

no kite etiquette required to my knowledge. during the peak season, you may see 30 kites in the air at Grayton. People just tie them up to their truck or whatever and let them keep flying. I guess you should keep an eye on it in case it comes down near someone down the beach. but not many people on the beach from here on out... :clap_1:

I enjoy seeing the kites flying. I think the only etiquette to consider would be if your friend uses that stunt kite, and keeps threatening people with it by dive bombing them. That would be a :nono1:.

Katie, I think flying kites on the beach is cool! And I can't imagine that kite lines would be annoying. Now, those people who set their fishing lines up on the shore and leave them for hours...that's another story.
I hate running into those stupid almost-invisible lines when I'm taking a walk, not really paying attention, zoning out at the beach, and wham! I'm nearly tangled up in one that comes up suddenly on me. I have no problem with fishing but absentee fisherman hogging the beach drive me nuts. (Sorry for the rant; hope I haven't opened up a kettle of worms here!)

Simple solution to the fishing line across the bridge of the nose--when you see the pole, walk behind it!!!

Just my attempt at alittle humor. No illwill intended. We surf fish some when down in Seagrove :clap_1: and we never leave our lines unattended.

I don't know that I have ever seen, or not seen in this case, absentee fisherman. It is funny how those non-moving fishing poles "come up suddenly on you," eh? Sneaky little things aren't they.I hate running into those stupid almost-invisible lines when I'm taking a walk, not really paying attention, zoning out at the beach, and wham! FYI - I think the proper etiquette is that if someone has their fishing fole set up, you should walk around it, not under it. I have seen a few rod and reels get ripped right out of the ground when a big fish hooks on. It could be dangerous for anyone walking underneath.

I have to admit it's probably 99% of fishermen who ARE there with their lines. It's the other 1% who I think are rude. Of course you notice fishermen sitting on their chairs, enjoying the sunshine, talking, and having a good time. That's great! But the unguarded lines are the ones that sneak up on you.
I always walk behind the lines. Don't want to disturb what could be a good nibble. ;-)

Back to fishing (since this is the kite etiquette thread)...
There's a guy I've seen over between One Seagrove Place and Seagrove Dunes who will put out as many as a half-dozen lines at a time...maybe more. Must be rude, right?
Well, it turns out he's a commercial pompano fisherman and is trying to make a living. Pompano tend to frequent the beaches and are not as easy to target from a boat as other species. The only legal way to commercially catch pompano in Walton County is via hook-and-line or a castnet.
If you buy pomp from Goatfeathers you're probably buying his.
A couple of friends of mine talked to him once...during a five-minute conversation, one woman got mad because she had to walk around the rods which were set up about 8 or 10 feet from the water line. He told them another one had complained earlier because fishing in general offended her.
Fishing is supposed to be relaxing, but they said he didn't look very relaxed. In fact, they left him because they felt like they were getting in the way while he was trying to work. The last thing he said was "ya know, some of us are not on vacation."
