Freecycle can help

I just wanted to share this from a friend.

Last week, a dear friend was given a 24 hour notice to vacate her
mobile home. The owner wanted the property for his daughter. My
friend is a disabled, thirty-two year old mother of an eight year
old. She has an amputated leg from her diabetes and she is currently
on dialysis while she waits for a kidney transplant. She is from
Norway and does not have any family here to help her. Needless to
say, she is very ill and was really needed help. It was a Wednesday
afternoon so I called nine different churches in the area closest to
her home (Springfield, Cedar Grove, Parker) and left detailed
messages explaining her dilemma. I foolishly thought since the
churches have their Wed. night services, they could make an
announcement about her needs. Surely a few "Christians" with pick-up
trucks would come to her rescue, right ? Well I so was Wrong. Not
one of the churches returned my calls. I am very disappointed in the
churches and their claim of Christianity here in the "bible belt". I
also called Catholic Social Services. The kind lady there who
answered the phone offered to help her after work. Bless you.
Then I got the idea to post the plea for help on the Yahoo groups
Panama city freecycle. This is where I found the Kindness of
Strangers and an out pouring of care and concern for her. It seems
that if there is a need, ask the Freecycle groups. Three women met
her at her house with pick up trucks and they got most of everything
moved. They worked in the heat and in the dark, well past 9:00 p.m.
They even offered to help her unpack her things in her new place
this weekend or whenever she is ready. They did not ask for any
recognition, gas money or anything in return. This is really paying
it forward. I'd like to send a big hug and heartfelt thank you to
each of them. You folks really made a difference.
Also, I'd like to remind the churches of my favorite scriptures...
Luke 6:38...Give, and it shall be given unto you: good measure,
pressed down, shaken together and running over, shall men give into
your bosom. For with the same measure that you meet, there with it
shall be measured to you again." I hope you never find yourself in a
situation like my friend was and if you do, write the Freecycle
group.
Oh, and by the way, my husband a "Damn Yankee" and an atheist from
Wisconsin took off from work and finished moving her. Thanks honey,
I love you.

Lightworker, as a christian I'm sadden that you and your friend got no response from local churches. I think that today many churches "offically" help only their members or those that attend that church. Have you been in a church business meeting lately?? Very eye opening!! You would have probably faired better contacting a church member or church leader you know personally. The person in the office had to follow church policy. I'm retired and try to help people in my community all I can (driving them to doctors, mowing yards, cooking etc) haven't moved anyone but certainly would.

:yikes: Wow.

Sometimes I think we forget how much we can help others. It is so easy to close our eyes, and I'm guilty of it too. However, I hope that eveyone hears this message and tries to help those around us and change what we can.

I'm not big enough to change the enitre world, but if I change and affect as many little things as I can ---- that plenty successful for me.

Thanks for posting this! I needed to hear this right now!

I though it was your friend that had to move also. How did this lady find a new place so soon? I think her landlord should have moved her since he made her move so fast.Didn't she have a lease?
Anyway I don't think it really matters where the husband of your friend is from and I'm sure he's a very good person but .........

I did not write this, my friend did and I guess she can call her husband whatever she wants to. I think she just was making the point that he had helped her when others did not. I don't know all of the details of the landlord or a lease. I just hope the next time we hear anyone needing help we do what we can.

The landlord has to give her at least 15 days when they are evicting someone for personal use (like they/family are moving back into the house). Otherwise they have to give 30 days notice. She should sue him for all expenses incurred in the move.

WTF? It's been a while since I attended church, and while I am not shocked at this incident, I am somewhat surprised. I thought Christians were supposed to reach out to help those in need. I cannot believe (well, I can) that they would actually draw lines around their congregation. What a crock of crap. For a long time, I thought the churches were a good at creating a sense of community, as they prayed for the sick, brought food to the hungry, and shared tears of sorrow. If they draw the line around the church when it comes to helping people in need, shame on them all. I have no problem when having limited means, and having two people who need help, chosing the one closest to me. One person can do only so much. However, if my means are not limited, I would reach out to help everyone I can in a heart beat. Sounds like some people need to revisit the teachings of Jesus.

Apparently you didn't read the condition of the lady having to move. It sounds like it would be unlikely that she is fit to represent herself in court, and too poor to hire a lawyer to seek trivial monetary damages. I think the message isn't so much about the landlord/tenant laws as it is a message that it doesn't take a Christian to be giving like Jesus. Before Jesus, there were no Christians. Think about that for a while.

Yes I read about the ladies condition and how the so-called christian groups would not help. I think that it is great that freecycle came to the rescue. But I also think she should look into the landlord/tenet laws because this isnt any more "right" than the lack of compassion shown by the groups listed there.

As a Christian, this makes my heart hurt. Sounds like the people that got called were not listening to what Jesus taught.

They need to go back and read parables such as the Good Samaratin, etc. Then get on their knees, no flat on their faces, and beg forgiveness.

How can you stand up and tell people about salvation and forgiveness and repentance from sin, when you won't reach out to help the peple that are in your face?

Shame on us!!!:bang:

Don't fret too much. I see this behavior more times than I'd ever imagine. People shunning their own families in the name of doing work for their churches. Shameful. :(

Thanks, MK. Being frequent doesn't make it right.

I think it goes back to things that were talked about on the Worry thread: Self centeredness.

all we can do is lead by example,...............................but wait!!!

didn't Jesus do that a couple of thousand years ago?

A few years ago a couple with a little baby came into my shop at the time. Their car had broken down in Panama City and they had spent every dime on repairs. While their car was being worked on they started looking for help. All they needed was enough money to make it back to Tennessee. No one would help them so they drove down 30A . At the time I was not in great financial shape but I told them I would give them some and ask around for more .When I looked in my money box I found a $20 that I did not remember. I gave the money to this couple and the look on their faces will be etched in my mind forever.

That may be used often in Christianity, but its origins go back, long before Christianity. Look to Hinduism and Buddhism to find that teaching. It is really found within many religions.

Bless those that helped this woman. Pity for those who trumpet "love thy neighbor" and take that all too literally. There's a pattern there.

I see this type of lack of response more and more often in these "modern" times. I've witnessed that an alarming increase of society thinks that someone else will help instead of thinking HOW themselves can help. I don't just put it on Christians, though I understand that example is pertinent to this event. I see this as a broader shift in society which has come to effect all groups and unfortunately those who should know and act better.

If we as a society are so proud of our technological achievements, time saving devices and infrastructures, just what exactly is it that we are spending this time savings on? And to what end? Doesn't a rising tide raise all boats? I think we all know that answer.

Specifically and back to the "church group" in question, I had the misfortune to witness a very large Christian group in a disaster area whose "soul" purpose for being there was to convert and pray with refugees as opposed to physically and monetarily helping to rebuild lives. Too many details which are necessary here, but it was painful to see. I'd say roughly 90% of the volunteers I came in contact with were secular with one thing on their minds; help those who cannot help themselves.

Sadly or perhaps fortunately, as a child of the Southern Baptist Church from the belt buckle of the bible belt, the further I get away from steeples and pulpits the more I see the world and humanity as it really exists. I never want to take away someones beliefs and respect all those who only ultimately want to better themselves, but I understand and have faith in what I've seen and not what I'm told.

Yes, I am a Christian, but religious? Never again. I see Jesus in the blood, tears and sweat of others, the bird on the tree or the wind across my sun warmed skin. Never again will I allow my soul to be bought or sold. It's my gift to give.

Ok, sorry. My heart goes into pity party mode when I hear these things.

Ok the point I think I was trying to make is this person called and left a message at several local churches. Many churches have certain outreach policies, like my sister's church (Avondale United Methodist in Jax) they are refer people to Westside something ,which is a non-profit organization supported by a group of inter-denomational churches.Yes they help others outside their church but unless you know someone to call directly other than the office number it takes longer than 24 hrs.
Now my pastor would help anyone anytime. But if you called the church office instead of him directly, there would be a delay as the information would have to be channeled in the right direction.
Miss Kitty I was up in arms back 3 years ago because my son went on
mission trip out of the county when I though I needed his help right here.I told him, our pastor, and anyone who would listen too.I pretty much told them all what they could do with their mission work. I guess every situation is different, and it turned out my son knew more about the whole situation than his mama did. Now life is good:D
I'm really not trying to create controversy here. But this thread really bothers me . Its not always so black and white, there is a lot of grey area. Again, I'm not trying to be rude to anyone. MAybe I should go back to lurking?? But how then could I make my football picks???

CP, you do not have to go back to lurking. Everyone has strong opinions about certain things and threads can get skewed sometimes. I do not think anyone thinks you are rude. We are all here to learn, have funn and discuss things.
