I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety.
My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated.
All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of hair.
When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like a kennel.
When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies who beat me there.
I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable.
I would have money ......and no guilt to go on a real vacation.
I would not be on a first-name basis with 6 veterinarians, as I put their yet unborn grand kids through college.
The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down, come, no, stay, and leave him/her/it ALONE.
My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers.
My house would not look like a day care center, toys everywhere.
My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash.
I would no longer have to Spell the words:
B-A-L-L, F-R-I-S-B-E- E, W-A-L-K, T-R-E-A-T, B-I-K-E, G-O, R-I-D-E
I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.
I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too much.
I'd look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading "mud" season.
I would not have to answer the question "Why do you have so many animals?" from people who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are loved unconditionally by someone as close to an angel as they will ever get.
How EMPTY my life would be.
How so very true this is....and while I am on the subject, as touched on in another post, having pets is a life long commitment. Dogs live to be 12-15 years old, some breeds longer. So, if you choose to get a pet think about that. They are not disposable creatures. I have a co-worker right now who got a puppy for her niece. Her niece is scared of the puppy. Co-worker is tired of the inconvience of the puppy. Co-worker wants to get rid of puppy...Darlene is very upset about this. I told her not to get the dog in the first place....Yada, yada, yada....so here is another puppy in this world that is looking for a new home. It is very sad to me. My dogs are my children and they will be for many years to come, in sickness and in health they are my responsibility no matter the cost. I chose to have them, and I chose to take care of them. There are times when I want to take off for the weekend....I can't, I have dogs. There are times when I want to go out for a drink after work.....I can't, I have dogs that need to be fed and walked. OH, and one more thing, please, please, please have your dogs on heartworm prevention. This is a terrible way for a dog to die, and it is a terrible treatment for a dog that has been infected.

Ok, I have to join this post. This touches a nerve. I have friends that have had cats and dog. They get tired of them and take them to the LB.
Drive me nuts.
I dont have any pics here at work (yeah busy day) but we have a long rap sheet.
I started out about 13 years ago when my best friends wife decided she didnt like the cat anymore. She was about 14-15 weeks old. They were taking her away so I grabbed her. My dog had just died and my bird needed some entertainment. Did not know
cats like to spray their new environment at the time but Im very familiar with the process now
. 13 years later she is still going strong and keeping the younger cats in line.
Next the Boxer breeder is going out of business and have a timid 7 month old that needs a home. I had to pay for her but shes the most incredible boxer I ever met. FYI (when your not looking Boxers eat furniture). Shes now 12 and no longer eats wood.
Now as if 2 pets wasnt enough  I was eating dinner in outback one day and this little UGLY puppy run in the joint.
Comes right over to me and looks up. I set my beer down and asked her what she wanted.
She wanted a home. She got. The ULGY duckling grew in to a beautiful swan. Long hair, looks like a cross between a lab and something. She is pretty and sweet. She is 12 and still drive us nuts. She sheds like you have never seen. My wife and I found a birds nest in the bushes made out of her hair and leaves. Lot of her hair.
There have been times when I wanted to kick her to the curb(last night when she knocked my drink off the table pushing the other dog out of the way just to get her share of attention). But I figure the cats like her so I keep her around.
But if the cats say the word I have to give her walking papers.
Then I got married to 2 more cats, oh yeah my wife came with them. She has a much more gently way with them so they were scared of me. My cat thinks shes a dog. I never had a cat and like to be a little rough with my dog so needless to say my cat acts, attacks, plays, and begs like a dog the dogs do. So when my wifes cats moved in my dogs were cat friendly.
They had always seen a cat around so why not another. BUT MY CAT had not
seen many of her type and I never saw her checking herself out in a mirror. ;-) So when she saw them
she attacked. Then the subdividing gates when up. Nice now I have to open little gate just to go to a different room, love it. Wife didnt like the dogs upstairs and the cats and cat/dog didnt get along.
Since then we have become a happy united family.
(2 yrs later)
Now back to her cat the she rescued from the LB. that didnt care for me. I put her up in the attic and didnt feed her for a month so she learned to live with the squirrels. She ate nuts and ran around in the attic for about a year driving the other animals in the house crazy.
Just kidding, just trying to get your attention after this long boring story.
I really took every opportunity to grab her every time she passed me until she stopped hissing at me.
Eventually she just gave in and let me pick her up(she is de clawed thank got, it would have been ugly) knowing eventfully after all the hugging and kissing I would put her down and let her go about her business. Of course, until she had to walk by me again.
She really makes it a point to walk by me now and greet me at the top of the stairs when I get home from work. I do feel that I have broken her will and almost have her convinced she likes me and want to see me.
Last on the list is the creature you see in the tar. She still doesn?t like me. She think Im a little nuts and steers clear.
Every once and a while she gets a little close and suffers the Consequences
but I will break her. One day soon she will realize that I am the alfa cat/dog whatever, and without me she would be up in the attic with the others. kidding, there are no domestic animals living in my attic.
In between all this I rescued another boxer that did have heartworms. I was only fostering her. Took about 3 months to get rid of the heartworms, and about 1000.00 bucks but I found her a nice home in Hilton head on the beach. That one lives better than I do now.
Thats my animal story and no I cant take any more pets.
No really, there is not more room in the attic.
Sorry about the long story but it had to be told. All names were withheld to protect the innocent.

JT, I think I love you!!!!!
That was a wonderful, wonderful story!!!!!! The animals around you are very, very lucky my friend. Watch out though, I know from experience that rescued animals somehow tell other animals that need rescuing and by some miracle they find their way to your house.

They do seem to have some underground communication among them.

Not sure what I would do without our "kids". They are as much a part of our lives as breathing. Our lab is 14, and amazingly, our two bullmastiffs respect her as the alpha and, basically, stay by her side almost like they are watching over her. If anything, they can make me smile at the worst of times just from looking at them. Besides, who can resist a face like this?
