discrimination by Mother Nature

I just heard a reporter say, "Hurricane Katrina discriminated against the poor people of NOLA, who happen to be black". I think I understand what he was trying to say, but how can an act of Mother Nature discriminate? Should reporters be required to take more Engish classes?

I love Fox news. No other media outlet even comes close to being "fair and balanced" IMHO. They report I decide.

You realize you just quoted two of the tag lines they feed us in hope that we'll bite. They got you.

A fish does not see the water in which it swims. Dems see (the left leaning) CNN as the voice of reason. Repubs see (the right wing) FOX as Fair and Balanced. All news is filtered through some kind of political strain, if you haven't learned that by now you may be the kind of person easily swayed by propaganda. A perfect TV news viewer. They got you.

If anyone was really, truly interested in getting both sides of the story, then "deciding for themselves", they'd watch CNN, FOX and most importantly, the international news agency reports, and then decide. Please dont think one network is giving you the whole story.

The only two media outlets that I have found to show clear evidence of a political agenda, are CBS and the New York Times. I refuse to watch the first, or read the second. As far as the others, I may agree with their "view" or not, depending on the issue. I just take it all with a grain of salt, as we all should when taking in the news.

Thank you for expressing your opinion without ridiculing others. :clap_1: Thumper may want to ponder this " Pride goeth before the fall". Maybe he should watch his step.

I hear you say "more" balanced, but more balanced that what, CNN? That ain't sayin' much. Who is the other liberal on Fox?
There are liberals all day long on Fox expressing their opinions.

Can you name one? Just one, other than Alan Colmes? You may not like the way Thumper said it, but he is correct.

Al Sharpton

Liberals and conservatives are both represented on Fox.

Thumper made some assumptions in his post that are not correct and you are right - I don't like the way he said it.

Al Sharpton. Okay, you got me. He looks real balanced next to Sean Hannity. Right. When you see a liberal, even Alan Colmes, on Fox News, you can rest assured that it is a mismatch, and the home team has the advantage.

What liberal would you consider to be a worthy match for those who represent the conservative position on Fox?

Whoa---back up----Al Sharpton????

I believe he is a black activist first and foremost (and an ineffective one IMHO). Which leaves him with little talent or insight to go at it on most other issues. We don't watch FOX, because "liberals" like Al Sharpton are not really balancing anything.

All media outlets owned by a corporation reflect the agenda of that corporation, which in some cases may only be to make money. The real problem is not bias but rather the lack of true journalism. Nearly every news outlet these days regurgitates information spoon fed to them by corporations and the government. Isn't it amazing how every story on every station is pretty much the same, and even in the same order?

I appreciate NPR and PBS for spending more time on important issues, going in depth and avoiding sound bites. A broad and enlightened view is a welcome relief from advertising-driven "infotainment".

I don't trust people who are always saying "trust me". And you have to wonder about a network who's slogan is "fair and balanced". I think a better slogan for Fox and all other networks would be "DON'T TURN US OFF, OR CHANGE THE CHANNEL, OR THE SKY WILL FALL    ".

Effective, voluntary brainwashing. There is very little difference between people in our country (or political parties). But these days we are so easily convinced there is.

Linda, this thread was started because I see journalists using the English language incorrectly, whether it is with purpose and intent, or out of ignorance, I do not know. If you want to debate Corporate Broadcasting, begin a new thread. Do you know how confusing it must be to be a newcomber on the board, or an old timer looking for a reference? They see a thread link and think this could be what I am looking for. The next thing you know they are reading through hundreds of posts about men in tights. No different here. If you are so passionate about Fox News being fair and balanced, begin a new thread, but lets stop screwing it up for others.

That's true, and while I abhor discrimination and wish for a great education for all (and great parents for all), it's hard to argue with the free market. The best locations -- not just the best neighborhoods but the highest elevations, the best pieces of land to build on -- are always going to be more expensive. Poor people can't afford them. That's not discrimination. It's reality. Unless we want socialism, it's always going to be that way.

That's not to say that, perhaps, we can't do things to make those lesser pieces of land more desirable. Which comes down to, in the case of New Orleans, protecting the wetlands, building better levees and floodwalls, etc. I believe the government has a responsibility to make those things happen. Does that make me conservative or liberal? Somebody tell me, because I don't know anymore!!

same thing happened in Paduca, KY along the river. the one low-lying dip that runs along the shore is, indeed, the the low rent district and prone to flooding. once beyond it, prices go back up. weird, now that you mention it!

Without stirring the cauldron O' fear everyday, no one would watch. I most love how each network has it's own fanfare during the news. NBC plays their tune and I start salivating like a Pavlovian poodle. Fox rings that breaking news bell, and I start chanting "Fair and rightist". Still it's sad there is no one in the middle, because that's boring. NPR and PBS do have the most intellectual programming, but it's so predictable how their angle is left, and they consider all of corporate America to the right. That's not always the case. I wake up everyday to NPR, because when I hear the interview of Pujeeb, the Egyptian, in Cairo, who claims he was beaten by the INS, I want to smash the GE radio into bits. I always wake up! Just reading Orwell's Politics and the English language, you would swear he had a time machine.

while I understand why some may prefer FOX news (like many of my friends and family in Bham, Alabama - I get a good dose of it everytime I visit), there is a reason. but I believe its reporting is just about as unbalanced as possible, and much of it is extremely sensationalized reporting (Geraldo's evening show).

It's great to have a choice in programming! I'll take CNN and NPR.

Thank you Thumper :clap_1: That is the smartest thing I have read all week. Linda, don't take offense by his comment, everyone else who read it was thinking the same thing. We are all programmed consumers and the sooner it is pointed out to us the sooner we can stop parotting corporations and start thinking for ourselves. If we can't watch a news channel without being angry, we are not unbiased.

Have a Coke and a Smile!
