"In the real world you don't get a reward for showing up and just doing the minimum requirements - you get a pink slip!"
In the "real world" we all get a pink slip one day...
So reward yourself every moment of every day by just being.

Too often people feel they should be rewarded just for doing their job, being nice or following the rules. Exceptional effort should be rewarded, but doing the minimum or what is expected of you shouldn't be an "achievement". In the words of my father: "In the real world you don't get a reward for showing up and just doing the minimum requirements - you get a pink slip!"I know plenty of employers who would love for people to "show up" and do that which is expected. These employers would be tickled pink to think that the employees actually do their job. Having exceptional employees is like holding a mini-lotto ticket.
 Making mistakes is the best way to learn! Those are the lessons I remember the best too.

So sad! I blame our lowered expectations/standards for this! Weighted grades, self esteem trumping academics, lack of parental involvement in schools etc.
People's level of achievement will rise or fall based upon your expectations of them - demand the best and you often get it..................just as you will if you expect the worst of people!

One of the saddest things is when we stop honoring our individual gifts and yet start demanding them of others.

I spoke with my wife about my posts last night and asked her response about character. She said her greatest challenge regarding students involves changes she has seen over her career. She believes most 5th graders exhibit more worldly tendencies, but their attention spans are shorter. Cheating by copying test answers is a constant challenge. Some of her students look completely baffled that comparing answers with your neighbor does not measure their level of achievement. There is no help from many parents regarding this issue, because of the prevailing attitude with some folks of "win at any cost". She suspects that with FCAT and merit pay being based on test scores, many of her colleagues look the other way. Just as fraternities and sororities are training grounds for the country club set, perhaps the test scores are the precursors to bank account balances, and this is indoctrination to capitalism. Perhaps it would be kind not to point this out.

Yes, d@mn all those teachers and family members who pushed me to do my best and wouldn't accept excuses/anything less because they knew what I was capable of! Serves them right that I and my classmates became confident, well educated, productive and hardworking members of society!
All I'm saying is that if you tell a child they can do & achieve anything, they'll believe you.................Lower your expectations and make excuses for them and you lower their level of achievement.
Expecting people to work hard and succeed doesn't diminish their individual gifts, it gives them a solid foundation of support to build their dreams upon.

Why not believe in them no matter what they choose to do? I see expectations and limitations as two peas in the same pod. Just my 3 cents.

The underlying success factor of good character is the single most important factor in determining our success, and the good news is that each of us have the ability to develop it and achieve extraordinary success in life! It is vitally important to each of us that we develop the underlying success factor of positive character qualities in our own life! And, it is critical to our children's future that we help them to fully develop it as we educate and train them and prepare them for their future.

I don't see making your kid do their homework, try in school, and work hard as "limitations". I'm not advocating that you decide their careerpath while they're in the womb or scoff at their interests, but that you believe in them and push them to excell in whatever they do.

My husband would certainly support that theory. He works for a major manufacturing company. The hourly workers are union and have better benefits, retirement and insurance than any salary employee. They easily make in excess of 6 figures annually. And yet my husband who is their supervisor must constantly battle with them to simply get them to do their job, nothing more. They get two 30 minute breaks and an hour lunch and yet when the bell rings to get back to work, they will never leave the lounge until he comes in there and "makes" them go back to work. I don't think he has seen an exceptional employee in years.

Let me clarify: I see expectations and limitations as two disappointed peas in a very small pod.

Hope your day gets better.
