Make an educated guess on how much money goes to the war a year not even every month!

Then search it on Google or if you already know it then there..

Then think that that money could do so much!
half that money could do so much...

think about how how many people still dont have homes in New Orleans..
and how all that money could build TONS of homes in america and save tons of people who are living on the street...

Heres a story I wrote for school...

GK; good write;

Good heart!!!

We all know how much $$$$ is going to the war... Hopefully things will change soon and our troops will be home safe and sound SOON!

Unfortunately because FEMA is a Federal entity; the bureaucracy stands strong on the organization; many fingers can point to the events that did and did not happen thanks to Katrina; but the good news is that FEMA developed WHAT they THINK will be a proactive method of response in the future...---->>>CLICKY

;-)

BTW; take a guess how much $$$$ this cost the U.S. . . . . .

GK; here is a great article by a man named Daniel Rothschild; IMHO hits it right on the head..... this guy has been around the news media quite a bit...

I have seen pics in HOPE Ar. but yet to see any from S.F. Louisiana..I know they are there or were there, but seems to be no photos easily procured on the net...:idontno:

Grayton Kid-Let uncle skunky give you a bit of advice as you get older. Do NOT fall in the trap of thinking that the government is a magic pot of cash whose job it is to dole out money to every project it can find. All the money the government has comes from YOU(eventually) and I. Many of the people in New Orleans who are without housing beyond a FEMA trailer now were 100% dependent on government money for food, clothing and shelter BEFORE Katrina. Our Government has robbed them of the skills needed to cope with adversity in the name of charity. If you add up the money 'the government' has already thrown at urban poverty since way back in the 20th century, it would probably be enough to fund dozens of wars. I know it sounds mean, but when it is your tax dollars being used to fund insanity, you might just say, "hey, Uncle Skunky was right". Maybe;-)

Realistically, how many of those folks on the dole CAN work? I know there is a percentage that is truly unable to work due to mental illness or disability, but I'd love to see us make welfare for able-bodied folks a temporary crutch rather than a lifestyle.

Folks, you gotta listen to Skunky. He knows whereof he speaks, and what he says here is not the half of it.

First, most of the money spent on the war is sunk cost anyway: soldiers salaries, fuel, equipment, ammunition, etc. Clearly there are some marginal costs and they are huge, but let's be careful to separate the two.

Second, if you have read some of my rants in other threads, the State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans have had multiple changes with billions of $ to fix the many ills that the state and city have, not the least of which is the generations of people on the welfare programs. The poor eduation system, the lack of flood protection (Prevention), infrastructure failures, etc. can all be laid at the feet of the leadership in both the state and city governments.

Read the book Kingfish, watch the movie Blaze. You will get a feel for the problem. Then multiply that understanding by 1000 and you will begin to get the idea.:yikes:

These people have had opportunities compounded and have pi$$ed essentially all of them away.:pissed:

I am not convinced that the mess can ever be fixed. Maybe we just sit by and let them rot in the mess of their own making.

Soap box back under bed.

Rant over (for the time being)!

Now don't get me wrong about New Orleans. Let me assure you, if you allow Louisiana to rot, the country will not enjoy the consequences...way too much petrochemical activity that goes on there would have to find a home someplace else...maybe your back yard. :yikes:

 You just added fuel to my fire. Skunky, you're in the healthcare business. Check out the cancer rates among kids from the petrochem alley on the lower Miss. I think that you will be surprised.:bang:

All the more reason that you should want to keep 'big petrochemical' in Louisiana! Actually, there was a huge brewhaha about Louisiana's cancer alley, environmental racism, etc, while I was growing up in Louisiana. It was so big Oprah came down and did a show from ground zero. Of course, these charges create lots of scrutiny and study;when I was in my residency an excellent long term study was published in the Louisiana State Medical Society journal which basically exploded the theory that cancer rates were any worse in 'cancer alley' than anywhere else. Naturally, those who invested time and effort in creating the hysteria scoffed, but the study was a good one. Here is a little synopsis...http://www.junkscience.com/news/canceralley.htm

Thank you for enlightening GK before some of the resident libs filled his head with some garbage that he didn't really need to hear. His heart is difinitely in the right place but there is more to this issue than meets the eye.
