Moms out there any advice you can offer is much appreciated. Here's my situation my husband and I are going on vacation so I should be really excited well I have mixed feelings. We will be gone for 8 days and will not be taking the baby who is 14 months. My mother will be watching him. On one side I am really excited to have this alone time with my husband. On the other I will miss my son terribly. Has anyone gone through this same situation and if so how did you cope. I really want to have a great time and not constantly be thinking of the baby. On a side note the reason in case you are wondering why we decided not to take the baby is we will be in a different country and felt it would be better to leave him here with his Grandma.

My sister left her son with me to vacation when he was little, and again when he was about 3. The hospital authorization is an excellent suggestion. We have one authorizing me on any occasion since I spend so much time with them. I think it is for any occasion which reminds me I need to check on that.

He was very happy to stay here. It was lots of fun.

You didn't say if your child was being watched at your home or your mothers. Since my nephew was staying here, we ran through all potential danger zones, putting electrical socket protectors, etc. (I already had child proof locks on my cabinets and such for when he was here)

When your child gets older and if you decide to vacation again, (the second time my nephew was 3) , we made a vacation scrap book that was his. We put a picture of Mom and Dad in the front waving hello with notes where they were going, a calendar with the dates marked they were coming home, and then the rest was for him to put pictures and drawings in of his vacation with his Aunty! He takes it out occassionally now (he's 6 and likes to reminisce about it.)

Have a wonderful time.

DonPtrl...ENJOY A WONDERFUL VACATION !!

Mango...I'm an Aunty (tho, not a parent) ... your Vacation Album is such a grand idea! Simply ADORE that at age 6 your nephew is "reminiscing"...:clap:

Mango my son will be staying with my mom. It is actually an awesome situation she watches him 3 days a week so he is very comfortable sleeping there. Also her house is baby proof already so no worries there. Bobby shame on you, you must take your wife I really enjoy Manuel Antonio very European beautiful beaches. Any suggestions from you besides Jaco where else to go and please don't say Tamarindo didn't care for it.

I have been all over Costa and love Mal Pais and Nosara the best. You can have Jaco and Tamarindo. Too Crowded. If you need any advice on Nosara give me a call. I just had an amazing trip there!

My husband and I left our 2 year old for a week, and after four days I was desperate to return to him. When we did finally return to him after a week, he actually turned and ran away from us and back to his grandpa. He had so much fun with my parents, he didn't want to come home. He didn't really have a concept of how long we were gone, and was having a great time. You will have a harder time more than your child. I don't know how to reccomend getting through it, but rest assured, your child will be just fine.

The first time we ever left my daughter was the summer before her junior year in high school. Actually, she left us -- she was chosen for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program and we couldn't let her miss that. Hubby had a business trip to Barcelona, so I reluctantly went without her. I was a nervous wreck.

I was afraid others wouldn't take care of her and something bad would happen. I didn't trust my mother to keep her because on several occasions she almost let my other brother and sister drown in the pool because she would get busy talking to someone and forget about them. You'll have to understand where I'm coming from -- my five-year-old brother was killed by a drunk driver who lost control of his car and ran over my brother, coming withing inches of hitting me, too.

Our daugter went everywhere with us, even on business trips when I was able to join my husband. I wouldn't even let her ride in a car with even my siblings -- I went with her on every field trip, every basketball trip, every violin lesson in Columbus (about an hour south of us), etc., etc. That is, until she was a junior and became embarrassed by it. I still went ... in my car. The exception was basketball games -- her small private school had no buses, so we were official drivers for the basketball team.

So I'm probably not the one to ask about leaving a baby and going on a trip.

OMG, sorry a drunk driver killed your baby brother right next to you . How horrific for you and your family. A good friend of Hubba's had their only son killed by a drunk driver at age 16.:bang:

It was pretty bad for an eight-year old to see her brother mangled like that. Mom went to bed for a year and never took off her pj's. Daddy worked some, but spent most of his time at the cemetery for months. Mom made me feel like I didn't matter -- like in the movie "Walk The Line," she would have rather it had been me than my brother with the blonde hair and blue eyes who looked just like her. The man who killed him hung himself in his jail cell that night. It made the national news.

I've been told that I'm lucky to be as normal as I am after experiencing all of that. I figure that I'm halfway normal -- the other half is, well, some of you know.:floor:

GO GO GO!!!! and have a wonderful vacation together! I cannot imagine regretting a minute of it. you deserve it. and your child will be having a great time with grandma, bonding for life, and this is a wonderful thing too. you shall not regret it!!!

my little one is the only grandchild of my parents living out of town (the other 5 live in town). he has spent a week at a time with them since he was born, and has the best relationship with his grandparents out of all 6 grandchildren. they are all close to my parents, but "in town" grandkids spend the night with grandparents often, but how often do they spend a week? this is wonderful and special time together. and you get a much needed break... good luck and take some pix!

Devastating. We  all your halves, gull. :ninja: I can not begin to imagine the nightmare. Sounds like you kind of lost your momma and baby bro all in a split second, and at just 8. Do you mind if I ask where you lived then? Just curious. Were your other two siblings older or younger than you?

Atlanta. My parents decided to have more children after my brother was killed so that I wouldn't be an only child, so my other brother and my sister were born later.

Thanks for sharing this sad and scary story. It just reminds me of how fragile life is and how you never know when you wake up in the morning if you'll end up safe and secure with all your loved ones that night. I'm glad you turned out okay after all too. :DI'm sorry that terrible loss happened to the 8 yr old future little beach runner. Its just a reminder for me to be more thankful for everyday and for family. It's no wonder you ever wanted to leave your daughter anywhere. As a kid I lived right outside of Atlanta. Went to Woodward, Nancy Creek, Chamblee, Norcross. You didn't go to any of those schools, did you? ;-) Not that it would've been at the same time anyhow. My fam left the ATL in '76.
