In the past several weeks, numerous businesses along U.S. Highway 98 and County Road 30A in South Walton were burglarized.
According to the Walton County Sheriff?s Department, a series of burglaries occurred in Okaloosa and Walton Counties during the early morning hours of Sept. 28 and 29.
In South Walton, Publix, Quiznos and Fat Clemenzas in Miramar Beach were hit, as well as the Texaco in Inlet Beach.
On Sept. 20, 15 businesses were hit in Fairhope, Ala., just north of Highway 98.
While authorities cannot say if the burglaries are related, the pattern is similar in the break-ins, where power was cut to a building and entry was gained through a glass door or panel.
No suspects in the Highway 98 burglaries have been released at this time.
During the early morning hours of Sept. 23, the Santa Rosa Pharmacy in Gulf Place on County Road 30A was burglarized for the fifth time this year. Owner Tom Flowers was not surprised with this most recent break-in and said he feels that crime around the area has become a more common trend.
?From what I know, the crime has increased,? said Flowers. ?My wife has 90 clients in a home watch program and she?s also been more aware of break-ins.? Flowers? business is just one of several that have recently been hit by burglars on 30A. On Oct. 3, Miss Lucille?s Gossip Parlor, which is also in the Gulf Place complex, was broken into for the fi rst time. ?I think a lot of the break-ins are seasonal,? said Miss Lucille?s Manager Bette Wagner. ?We?re not insulated just because we?re on 30A.?
Some 30A residents, like Kay Vaness, have begun to question the safety of the community.
?There are gang signs on Nick?s restaurant in Blue Mountain Beach,? said Vaness. ?I sometimes question if I should go jogging at night.?
?I?m not sure it?s as safe a place (on 30A) as everyone believes. I feel like the public should be better informed of what is going on.?
