Pre-emptive strikes against suspected terrorist bases ?sound familiar to anyone?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7046765.stm

Turkey has said its patience has run out over the handling of Kurdish rebels based in northern Iraq.
It is seeking parliamentary permission for a cross-border operation to pursue Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) members.

When you unleash such (stupid) ideas as the Bush Doctrine on the world, you should think twice about the consequences. And so the de-stabilizing of Iraq continues??????

I know this is an incredibly naive question, but why don't we have some sort of a contingency plan for this?

It's only an armed conflict that's been going on for 23 years and involving the country we are currently occupying with US troops :bang:.

The decision was made over a year ago...Bush pulled troops out of Kurd in 2006 on the guarantee from Ankara that they would quell the rebellion and not occupy...On the 14th of this month the Turks pulled most of the troops back in favor of helicopter and commando strikes...this is kind of "old news"

Given the rapidity of change 'on the ground' in Iraq, I don't think we can label any situation as "old news".

One of the points I wanted to raise with this thread was the danger of promoting such ideas as The Bush Doctrine.

Should we be surprised one day when China declares that it has evidence that Taiwan is plotting terrorist acts against Beijing and is therefore justified in a pre-emptive invasion of Taipei?

The Bush Doctrine was a terrible precedent to have unleashed on the world.

It's not so old - the Parliament is supposed to vote on it today, though they say they won't take immediate action.

From the AP:
The motion, authorizing an attack into Iraq sometime over the next year, has the backing of all but one party in Parliament. Only a small Kurdish party has said it would vote against it. ?The passage of the motion in Parliament does not mean that an operation will be carried out at once,? Erdogan said Tuesday. ?Turkey will act with common sense and determination when necessary and when the time is ripe.?

Of course, Turkey is also mad at us because the House decided the best use of their time would be to pass a resolution condemning the Ottoman Empire for genocide. Apparently Darfur etc. was too topical as that is actually occurring in the 21st century. :bang:

They pulled the troops from the border last week...

You can thank Speaker Pelosi and the committee heads for the resolution

They may have moved their troops, but Turkey's parliament just voted 507-19 to empower the government to order the military to cross into Iraq within one year.

U.S.-Turkey Relations Cool

Turkey recalled its ambassador to the U.S. and warned there would be dire consequences if Congress passes a resolution classifying the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1923 as genocide. What do you think?

Jane Young,
Systems Analyst
"This is reminiscent of when Germany withdrew their ambassador until America officially recognized Oktoberfest."

Ricardo Olmos,

"Well, politics is all about finding a middle ground. How about calling it an unmitigated slaughter? Would that work?"

Ben Hauer,
Insurance Agent
"If there's anything our Congress is good at, it's passing philosophical resolutions in name only that have no tangible outcome."

Pelosi is demonstrating the Peter Principle with this genocide resolution. Why don't we tack on the slaughter of the Sioux Indians genocide resolution by Abe Lincoln to celebrate his birthday, and buzz the Kremlin with a B-52 ala Slim Pickens. Oil should then be about 150/barrel.

Well in response to administration policies, mostly being pushed by Vice Prez Dick, an occasional Peter Principle is bound to be dangled about from time to time.

I have an elderly neighbor that knew Nancy Pelosi's family when he resided in Baltimore. He described her as a "handful". Nancy needs to focus on the agenda when there's no veto to override common sense legislation. Her timing was poor. The Turkish government is as dangerous as the Serbs.
